For a speed check go to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and run the test.

my Optus Cable:

Details

Your raw speed was 1248403.02 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

1.2 megabits per second

How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

152.4 kilobytes per second

The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

6.7 seconds

The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Why ADSL over cable at those prices Paul?

Cable internet access can provide a higher speed of download, but since it is a shared medium if everyone in your neighbourhood decides to use it at once your speeds go down. Think of it like public roads. Max download speed of one channel (city block or however large the network for that channel is) is 28Mb/s. Most cable modem connections have issues going above ~5Mb/s.

All ADSL connections use packetshaping (the built-in bandwidth limiting inherit in ADSL/ATM is used to regulated you down from ~8MB/s to whatever you have paid for). But your download speed from the ISP to you won't be restricted by other people's downloads. If their network is choked up, that's going to restrict both cable + adsl users regardless of plan/download speed.

I use netspace - some cheap prices and they have a reliable network with plenty of capacity... having said that the majority of problems with broadband in Aus stem from Telstra!

EDIT: checked some old notes - most cable modems had problems getting speeds over 5Mb/s rather than the 700Kb/s i had previously listed.

Maaannnnn.....1 MB/s...SHIZER!!! Speeds U dream of!!!!!!!!!!! optASS cable is definately the fastest but also capped.....and coz telstra is gay and running a monopoly....broadband internet isnt where it should be in AUS......so every1 has to settle for unlimited ADSL....which sadly is up to SPPEEEEDDD!!!!

I'm with iiNet (512K/128K) and it's pretty good. Speeds are reliable, occasionally slows down a bit just after midnight when all the leechers go crazy (and I'll admit to participating sometimes!) but during the day/evening it's sweet. Only bad point is reliability which doesn't match optus cable. But then, I have a usable net connection all month - on optus, I routinely hit 3GB on about the 24th-26th of every month despite being download-conscious all month, and then I had 28k service for a few days - GAY. Besides, if ADSL goes down I dial iiNet's modem number and get 56k service anyway. ADSL reliability is mostly limited by telstra's equipment, my outages are predominantly line problems rather than an iiNet link falling over.

I'm on iiNet 512/128 ADSL

I reccomend it. Optus cable is good and all, but what's the use of having a fast connection if you can't put it to good use (stupid small downlaod quotas)

my iiNet plan has 6GB off peak 6GB on peak quota - and i get 52-53kb/sec on overseas and local servers most of the time which is plenty fast. For $79.95 a month it's an excellent deal. Oh and when you get slowed for going over ur download quota, it slows you to 72k speed. Which usually gets you around 8kb/sec as well -- so overall a good deal.

  • 3 weeks later...

is there anyone on TPG unlimited 512/128 I'm thinking of switching? Need some opions/stats.

I'm on Pacific no contract 256/64 for $55 pm atm with 10gig off peak (1am - 8am) and 500 mb peak, constant speed and 99%uptime which is sweet coz I need a reliable connection and I only leech between 1am (get home at 12:30, after work) and at 9am I leave home to uni. 512 is 10 bux more, but meh with 10 gig I'm prepared to go a lil slower so I dun go over, usually I hit 9.5gig/month.

I live near byron bay, You guys are hell lucky

u can get adsl, cabel etc... Iv got peer gain line which i heard is the worst you can get. And i dont think there is nothing i can do about it, (any one know wat i can do?). I cant get adsl and cable and all that a satalite isnt really that good and prices are crazy also. I done that speed check and got 5.4min = 1mb

I reckon this one sounds like a good deal if you're after "cheap as" access. http://www.swiftdsl.com.au/adsl-plans-prices.htm

$45 for 256k with 2Gb incl. and 6cents per Gig over that...

Otherwise, the Netspace or Internode plans are the best IMO (not that i've actually tested them)

The company I work for re-sells Datafast and that has been quite good...

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
