Pretty much every car sold in Japan with a 'CD player moulded into the dash' also has a 2DIN panel available to fit aftermarket navi screens (for lower spec models). Trouble is, these are usually fitted at factory, and I've NEVER known anyone to remove the factory Nissan navi screen/audio in favour of a 2DIN set up... this could cost $$$ to get working right. getting the 2DIN panel would be the easy part...

Rezz - that's fine, but...

attached some pics of an install I found on a Japanese M35 owner's website, where it shows that the parts are available, and a 2 DIN set up being installed in what does not appear to be the Nissan factory!

So perhaps it is possible?

3rd pic looks VERY familar. I have a car that looks like that now.

Matt,

I know it's possible - I have done a V35 already. this thing is no different.

would like to see what found (pm me.)

to be honest you could still use the OE screen and the new one or buy a storage bin and replace the lot. I'll talk to you more about it when I see you.

Rear camera would be very nice (better than parking sensors surely?). Car is now booked and confirmed on a ship arriving ETA 21 June - yippee!

Hope I like it... :P

(BTW - can someone tell me how to change the 'RB20DE' that appears below my picture? For the life of me I couldn't find anything in the profile that relates to it)

ok so early july. that should be fun. (I'll explain later.)

does it have a OE camera already?

as for the RB20DE tag - keep yakking - it will change.

G'day mate and welcome.

Just to agree with some of the other posters, Chris is the one doing my wifes new ARX. Here are some pics and I think you maybe interested in the one showing the cruise :-)

Cheers

Very tasty Muz. Why, O Why is cruise not an option on the Axis?!!! Still - lucky Chris gets to do it :D

No you read me wrong  I meant that the 2DIN setups are 'usually' installed at factory (hence it'd be easier to install 2DIN navi screen in one of those obviously), so the cheapest/easiest way would be to start off with a car with one of those. The factory navi from Nissan on the other hand is very good as is, and I've never seen anyone ditch the retractable screen and navi system for a 2DIN setup... I'm not saying it can't (or hasn't) been done!

Also it's a lot of mucking around, was not sure whether you were going to do it yourself... IMO better to pay someone.

Cheers.

you do realise (to my knowledge) that there is no compliance for an '04. have a customer hee in brissy with one that has to get emmissons done on his (ARX4.)

Well what do you know...? Having grilled the compliancer at length, and forwarded some comments that Muz made to me, it now seems that 'my man' does NOT have emissions compliance for 2004+ models. So we're waiting on testing in Melbourne on what I assume is Muz's ARX4 to come through. Hopefully this will be done by the time may car arrives at the end of the month.

Thanks to Chris and Muz for making me aware of this issue.

now the truth comes out :P

The advice I have now from Muz's compliancer is that this had the potential to turn into a major SNAFU. Apparently the emissions testing for the pre-04 models was something of a circus, so heaven only knows how Muz and my cars will go - if at all. As you might imagine there have been some pretty sharp words between me and the compliancer who told me that 'any M35 with 2.5 turbo' could be complied.

THIS IS NOT THE CASE. So to anyone thinking of buying an M35, do not buy any later than 12/2003.

I hope something can be worked out...... one of the pitfalls to importing, ie not having complete access of the facts fo what is/isnt available. I went the easy route, bought a S1 already complied; although it was arguably the lowest priced one in the country at the time which contributed to my decision (plus it was under 80,000kms, dayz edition, an absolute bargain!).

If I was after a newer model Stagea Id seriously look at this one: http://www.j-spec.com.au/list/9998

If I had 20k and was looking for another car (which I dont, and Im not, considering the wifes Nubira only has 16000kms on it) Id buy it. :)

:D

that one was sold within about 1hour..i got the mail looked at it and came back and it had negotiation within another couple of hours it was sold/finished :):( looks like a great example and the colour is awesome :) :)

As this has the potential to turn very nasty, if it hasn't already, then, in my case, the broker must shoulder the blame. Ignorance (as in "I didnt' know about the requirements after a certain date") will certainly not be a defendable arguement.

Then again, if one was to go to the dotars web site and check what cars are actually importable (which is what I did), it makes absolutely no mention of a difference between the model years when discussing M35's so is the government actually at fault???

An interesting conundrum is it not?

Let the battle be joined!

Yes, I sincerely hope that this does not end up in court. I am still trying to remain positive that your compliancer will be able to get the emissions passed for both your sake and mine. I would certainly feel much more vulnerable if I didn't know that you were in the exact same predicament.

I will be taking legal advice over the next few days, just in case. I want to be sure that whatever happens next I don't prejudice the outcome of a suit against the compliancer. As you say, ignorance is no defence. I think the RAWS shop (or import agent) has a duty of care to provide accurate advice to their customers, and I'll be asking my attorney for clarification on the liability attaching to the RAWS shop.

As for DOTARS, well you can't really blame them. As I understand it there are criteria for a vehicle to be added to the SEVS register, such as kW/tonne etc. If an application is made, and the criteria are met, an approval would be issued. Whether or not compliance becomes available for each model is a matter for evidence being produced under the relevant ADRs for the year of manufacture. I think this is how it works, and presumably this is what we've gotten caught up in. Its up to the RAWS shop to provide evidence that the car meets the standard (and at their expense), otherwise DOTARS would have to test each vehicle, which really would be a waste of taxpayers money.

I suppose what you could argue is that an import approval should not be issued until a SEVS register entry was approved AND evidence had been produced by at least one RAWS shop.

At the end of the day we both want the cars we have purchased in good faith, on the road, complied, in a timely fashion. If this involves a wait of a few weeks, then so be it - annoying but not terminal. A few months - or longer - or not at all - is another matter altogether.

Hi guys there is a section of the forum dedicated to importing and SEVS, might be worth a post in there to see if anyone has any more knowledge for you. Importation forum

I would be questioning the import approval angle and the fact that the RAWS workshop is the actual importer of the car and not you. Doesn't sound terminal to me but if they RAWS is at fault this could drag out as I am sure they will try to shrug all blame... Time to read up on the SEVS rules if you haven't already I guess. I hope like hell that it doesn't get to this point but there is a time limit that the car must be complied in once landed and that is 12 months I believe, it shouldn't get to that but worst case, it is something to keep in mind.

My tip is to be very nice (even if you are not) to anyone that might be able to help the situation.

Cheers

Luke

    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
