I know this has already been a topic for discussion but I need to know if there is anyone in south east QLD who can hook me up with an engineer who will mod plate my R33's front mount intercooler modification - the chassis rails are NOT cut but the front bumper reinforcement (Reo or crash bar) has been cut to accomodate the intercooler.

The officer did not notice the hole cut just under the window washer bottle for the piping - nor did he listen to my story about how I purchased the car 5 years ago with the front mount modifications (but no intercooler) already in place.

I know this is going to cost $ but I just need someone who can look over it and certify it.

depending on what dollars you have to spend you have a few options:

To do it properly you should really get a new bumper and change the intercooler set-up so you dont have to cut into the bar

but if you dont want to spend bulk coin and....

if it was me i would either try and find an engineer that will sign off on it or (and this is most likely what i would do)

go to a wrecker, offer them a carton of piss to borrow one of their stock front bars and install it. Its not hard to take the bumper off and i would take the intercooler out and out a straight piece of pipe in its place so you can still drive it. Sounds dodge but as long as you dont boot the crap out of the car it will be ok. Take it to the pits, get it passed and change everthing back after and then your done, until next time...

reo cut = big trouble. An intercooler will do nothing compared to a reo and hence why it is completely illegal to remove/cut it. As others have said you'll have a hard time finding someone to mod plate it unless they are very dodgy!

Yes you will most probably have to have to get the reo rewelded ( or find another one) and change your intercooler set up

Mate i would be finding out who originally wrote out the roadworthy certificate before you purchased the car.

Because if they passed it the way it is they might know someone who can give you a mod plate or they just did the big dodgey on you.

it's far from impossible, nearly every decent workshop makes custom mounts for coolers to ensure the reo isn't cut. Then again, its hard to get caught as people rarely check behind a front bar to ensure the reo isn't cut, so thats why most "kits" etc require reo cutting.

just a note about this.. the local bodykit builder here said that you can legally cut the front reo bar in the r33 as it can be bolted on and off the car and is not considered part of the chassis, however i would recommend against it as i modified the reo bar in order to fit on an aftermarket bumper.. last week i had a little accident where i barely hit the back of another car.. the other car is completely fine and my skyline is pretty messed up needing 5k worth of repair on it..

i can only think of one reason why it caused so much damage.. the reo bar was cut! so im sticking to a stock front bumper after the repair work..

Thanks all for your replys - I should have also mentioned the car has just been fitted out with a full body kit (and $8k re-spray...) which includes a Trust front bar that required cutting small amount off the reo - I say a small amount because the reo had already been cut by previous owner in Japan. I purchased the car 5 years ago from a Brisbane 'street machines' dealer (Brisbane locals will know who I'm talking about...) and they (or the previous owner) had re-fitted the standard intercooler back on - presumably for compliance, but then how did it get complied with the cut reo if I've just been defected for it... I'll tell ya how - dodgyness.

I'm all up for dodgyness in this case and I'm not concerned about the crash damage potential - I just want someone to hook me up with someone who'll give me the required paperwork to get this sorted.

so tell me about this decent workshop that doesnt cut a cooler..? supply a hybrid kit to a shop and i put money down they will cut it.. :P

First of all I dont think anyone cuts the cooler...we're talking about the reo.

And the workshops cut it because the "kit" doesn't supply correct mounts, as I said...workshops such as millenium (and many others) will make new brackets or tell you of the risk. You said its impossible to get a cooler to fit without cutting the reo..this is blatantly incorrect...all it requires (in most cases) is new brackets...most people buy hybrid kits and are to cheap to spend money on new brackets. Then again, as I said, you rarely get caught...so why bother.

Why is it then even with big name brand kits, ARC, Blitz you have to cut the reo bar?

One would think they are trying to do things the right way and it's impossible to not cut the reo on some model cars?

    • If you have a RB25DET NEO AWD motor, you will need this: https://www.hioctanedirect.com/ASR-RB26-RWD-Street-Comp-6.5L-Sump-Suit-R32/33/34-and-VL It is made for the AWD motor, but makes it fit a RWD setup and gives you a new pickup. Just one thing, the pickup sits quite forward, compared to a conventional RB25DET RWD motor. This may or may not have contributed to my previous AWD -> RWD shitting the bed at the track.
    • My car is also flex tuned. It's worth mentioning it (the LS1 ECU) has a 1D table for E85 addition and just uses the ethanol stoich part as the second point of reference. It also as a 3D timing map for Ethanol adjustment. You would think this isn't enough but it works pretty damn well. That said, I wouldn't want it in turbo application. It's like lifting non-natty, or taking meth. It gets you unrealistic results that break down more things going forward. If people used it to make the same amount of power they do on 98 then it'd be one thing. But people use it, crank it up to eleventy million PSI, it doesn't knock - but it pushes the point of failure to another, more expensive thing to break. Every time I see someone make 280kw on 98 and 350kw on E85 on the same equipment I just cry a bit and really wish they would just stay on 98 in that exact scenario. It's bad for you. 
    • This is kind of what I was thinking but the temp sender wire and the two pressure switch wires run through the starter subharnes and I eliminated the two pressure switch wires completely.  @GTSBoy I have a can gauge with unusually bright warnings should the oil pressure fall so the factory light isn't needed. I need to dig out my wiring diagram and see if I can sort this out.
    • It's a valid point. And it is doable with the Nistune. But I'm not inclined to flex it the way Nistune does - certainly not on a Neo ECU. They're already pernickety enough to tune just one one fuel. And of course, I'm not that interested in putting in a Link or similar, on a daily. With the stock ECU, stock looking turbo, etc etc, I still stand a chance of surviving a run-in with the plod. Last time it went over the pits (which was for the transplant, for because of a run-in with the plod), the Nistuned ECU did not even raise an eyebrow. They want to see a stock ECU running the engine, and they are happy to see it do so without the check engine light** on. Never mind that the Nistune is necessary to make the stock ECU work in a different chassis without ABS, TCS, etc. **And they actually provoke the CEL to come on by disconnecting the AFM, to prove that the globe hasn't been pulled!
