Hi all. Currently im saving my dollars to get my new turbo installed on my car, the issue im having is im using a power fc on a base tune just so i can get around before it gets the proper tune when my turbo goes in. The issue im having is i get the engine light to come on when i give the throttle some love. I do know it is overly knocking when it happens and i do manage to drive the car really carefully to keep the knock under 20 or so. (it only really knocks when going up a hill or something like that, its not constant.)

My first question is, would a stock ecu show the engine light in the same manner as the power fc if it produces too much knock?

Secondly, how would I go by reducing the knock if i were to keep the PFC in my car?

I have a basic understanding that you have to increase fuel and udjust timing, but where do you do it and by how much do you adjust it at a time?

Ok i managed to reduce the knock quite a lot just by making minor adjustments to my PFC. I put the IGN/IJN values to +1 and 1.136 which were originally 0 and 1.000. does anyone have any feedback to wether this could be more dangerous at all or cause any issues? the knock readings dramatically reduced and i didnt really get any knock over 20 for this which im fairly happy with.

Oh and thanks to Paulr33 who wrote up the guide on the power fc, its very helpul. :thumbsup:

do the best thing you can, get teh pfc tuned now, and then get it tuned again once you do the turbo. for the $300 odd that it will cost you for the second tune it may stop you blowing the motor or doing some serious damage.

the faq will give you all the info you need to fix it properly

if you feel you are up for the task. it will just bee some ign timing cells too advanced in the high load area

learn how to use map tracer and watch for the check light and then thats where to back out ign timing

or if its easier note down what conditions you see the light come on

rpm, load, speed, gear etc and give this info to your tuner, they can then sort it out

Yea its definantly coming on under heavy load. I have only seen the engine light come on twice or so, and im constantly looking at the amount of knock coming out and i rarely get it to or over 30. I just wanted to lower that even more to a much safer value. Im fairly happy with the settings i have so far, I just wanted to reduce the knock a little more in the heavy load part of the map. ill take another look at the map tracer and go from there i guess. I would really like to get a tune asap for the car but its a bit pointless because im getting the turbo put in most likely next month because i have everything to go in already. besides if i didnt have a go myself, i would have never known what to do or how to reduce knock.

    • Has equal chance of cleaning an AFM and f**king an AFM. I think you can work out what happened. When the Hitachi ECU sees the AFM die and goes into the associated limp mode, then it will start and run just fine, because it ignores the AFM and just runs on idle maps that will do what it needs to get it going. But there is no proper load signal, so that's about all it can do. My suggestion? If you don't want to go full aftermaket ECU, then get some R35 GTR AFM cards and some housings to put them in, in the stock location, and Nistune the ECU. Better to do a good upgrade than just replace shitty 40 year old tech with the same 40 year old tech.
    • So my car was recently having trouble starting on initial crank, I would need to feather the gas for it to start up but besides that it would start and run fine. So I clicked the idle air control valve (with throttle body cleaner) and cleaned the MAF sensors (with MAF cleaner). The start up issue was fixed and now the car turns over without the assist of the throttle, but the car is in limp mode and wont rev past 2.5k RPM. From what I understand the IACV would not put the car in limp mode, so I am to believe it is the MAF sensors, but it was running fine before and now I cant get it out of limp mode. I cleaned the MAF made sure the o rings were seated properly. Made sure the cables were plugged in properly, the cables also both read the same voltage. Does anybody know why this is or what could be causing this or how to get it out of limp mode?

    • That was the reason I asked. If you were going to be fully bodge spec, then that type of filler is the extreme bodge way to fill a large gap. But seeing as you're going to use glass sheet, I would only use that fibre reinforced filler if there are places that need a "bit more" after you've finished laying in the sheet. Which, ideally, you wouldn't. You might use a blob of it underneath the sheet, if you need to provide some support from under to keep the level of your sheet repair up as high as it needs to be, to minimise the amount of filler you need on top. Even though you're going bodge spec here, using glass instead of metal, the same rules apply wrt not having half inch deep filler on the top of the repair. Thick filler always ends up shitting the bed earlier than thin filler.
