Hi guys

I'm reinstalling a turbo back exhaust this week and was wondering how difficult it would be to fit an aftermarket exhaust manifold?

I have no idea of the time/difficulty and will be paying workshop time while assisting, so any suggestions would be helpful.

I suppose I should also ask whether its worth doing in the first place?

Thanks in advance.

It would be worth doing if it has to be done. You dont have to do it but if you do you know it will last a lot longer then the current one. It isn't hard to do but if you have no idea how to do it get a mate that may know and if not then it would most likely be best to get a workshop to do it... You also have to watch for if you snap and bolt heads off the dump pipe, If you do you will probably wish you had of taken it to a workshop because there is a bit of ass farting around if you do manage to snap a bolt.

I just put a low-mount stainless one on.

There's a week of evenings gone.. . . . :D

Seriously thoughtless design, I couldn't get a proper go at torquing 2 of the nuts, so I'm just praying they don't work loose. I had to slot-out 7 or 8 of the holes (up to 4mm!) just to get it over the studs, and the collector off cyl.5 fouled the stud & nut, so I had to file the weld seam & some of the pipe off just to get the fv(ker on ! !

am I allowed to say where I got it from? Hello, Legal dept. ! ! ? !

A high-mount would probably fit better, since the pipes aren't so tightly bent & grouped.

I am looking at going a low mount soon, im only going a hi flow so i want to be able to use all the existing exhaust and cooler piping, would be good to know where you got yours from, pm me if you like.

I would have thought that a tuned length manifold that is less restricive would have been more responsive and given a little more power, im only going a high flow so im looking for all the little things that make the car more drivable, the only plans i have so far are the injectors, fuel pump, high flow, low mount manifold and plenum, i already have a power fc, avcr and front mount.

The big question here is Tuned length manifold, so expect to pay the usual $1000 and up, only worth while from the gt30r and up range if you are after that special figure, Standard Log is fine for below that its been proven many times over Although other reputable brands do aid in gaining a better figure, but say that word reputable with good reason, as Above that low mount which has extensive mod to make it fit must have been similar design to an ebay special, and have to say that the low mount designs Do Not actually give much if any results as the hardness to get tuned length room and etc ask 6boost or other guys they may confim that for you.

For your above mods best to upgrade turbo back theres a start fmic another Cams another CAI and with the Highflow you shouldnt need to change either manifolds as both standard items will still give you excellent driveability on there own accord so theres some savings there, then again you can have dif suspension brakes to work on if you would like but unless you are planing on say going gt35r or gt3040 then highmount design external gate is the way to go then maybe change plenum and tb to suit, but at the stage you are at and highflows flowing dependant on what dyno between 240-270 all read different the standard items are fine as is spend money elsewhere.

Plus Added note change in ex manifold will most liklely result in change of turbo dump and front pipe positions as well as lines etc etc.

Hope that helps

One of my mates put a stainless manifold on.

It cracked within a month.

He then put the standard manifold on and the car now makes 270rwkw. Which was much more than he was expecting (he didn't want to go past 240, but got a bonus).

Thanks for the input everyone, very interesting. I'm only in stage 1, so no aftermarket exhaust manifold for me.

I've done two turbo back exhaust installs now and for whatever reason it seems ridiculously easy to shear off the turbo to dump pipe bolts :) as happened again this time.

It was only one bolt and my mechanic reckons it should be fine with all the rest bolted up, seems fine so far.

Do you guys reckon its worth paying someone to drill it out?

Its the one furthest away from the engine, pretty tight but thought someone might be able to get a drill in there...?

Same thing happened to me, i ended up getting rid of it cos of all the hassles, really not worth it if your wanting to stay low mount..

    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
    • Ok, disregard my “rate them” comment, sorry for my unrealistic input
