These are the laws that will be coming in if you obtain your licence AFTER july 1st 2007 (you can confirm this at the following link)

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Licens...werVehicles.htm

From 1 July 2007, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles will be introduced for probationary licence drivers who obtain their licence from 1 July 2007.

From this date a probationary licence holder will not be able to drive a vehicle if it has:

  • An engine of eight or more cylinders;
  • a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles);
  • an engine that has been modified to increase its performance; and/or
  • certain high performance six cylinder cars. An official list of nominated vehicles will be published on this website from 1 July 2007. In the interim it is expected to include the following vehicles:
    • the BMW M and M3,
    • Nissan 350Z,
    • Porsche (all models), and
    • Mercedes Benz SLK350.

Vehicles which are excluded from these restrictions are:

  • Turbocharged or supercharged diesel powered vehicles (without engine performance modifications);
  • all models of the Smart car, produced by Mercedes Benz; and
  • nominated vehicles with low powered turbocharged or supercharged engines. These vehicles include the following vehicles:
    • Suzuki Cappucino 2D Cabriolet Turbo 3 cylinder 689cc, and
    • Daihatsu Copen L880 2D Convertible 4 cylinder 659 cc.

The current power to weight restrictions will continue to apply for drivers who obtain their probationary licences before 1 July 2007.

If you want to buy a vehicle but you are unsure whether it has eight or more cylinders, or if it has a modified engine, or is either turbocharged or supercharged, or has any other features which would make it illegal for you to drive under the high powered vehicle restrictions, then your first step is to ask the car dealer who is selling the car. You could also contact the manufacturer directly for more information. If you are still unsure or doubt the information given, seek further advice from a licensed mechanic.

Penalties

From 1 July 2007, the penalty for driving a high powered vehicle will be three demerit points and a maximum fine of approximately $1100. These penalties will apply to both the current power to weight restrictions and the new high powered vehicles restrictions.

I am very interested in this as i am buying a nissan R33 non turbo which according to this should be fine to drive.

the power to weight ratio is

111.43 KW per Tonne

now can someone please tell me if i am missing something here that for some reason will not let me drive this car

p.s i get my licence on the 6th of july. if i buy a car this week, and then on the 1st of july the updated list says skyline r33 i will shoot everyone in my local vic roads office for screwing me around

Better be safe than sorry mate,

Just wait till everything clear up first, skylines prices are going down hill FAST anyway, don't rush.

ANY modification that increases the power output by 1 or more kw's is deemed illegal.

I also heard that if a p-plater is caught "hooning" the car will be impounded (as usual), but if suspected of having more power, it can be dynoed to check.

whatever respect i had (none) for the law/vicroads/government etc etc just keeps on going down coz they don't actually come up with any beneficial laws (for motorists), just pure stupid laws.....

oh well thats life...

ur absolutely correct, any car with a engine mod (eg a pod filter) will be deemed illegal on P Plates.

it wouldnt even matter if i was riding a bike. i slap a pod on and the cops can get me for it (thats if my bike had a engine buahhaha)

but damn 3 points and $1100 fine.......f*k that hurts

I obtained my probationary licence after 1 July 2007

From 1 July 2007, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles will be introduced for probationary licence drivers who obtain their licence from 1 July 2007.

From this date a probationary licence holder will not be able to drive a vehicle if it has:

an engine that has been modified to increase its performance;

The modifying restriction is ONLY stated on the NEW PPlate restrictions.

The page in regards to Current PPlaters, only states to abide to the Power:Weight ratio.

I dont think they will be asking current Pplaters to start pulling mods off their cars..

i just messaged the guy about the car. he said its only the muffler that is modified not the exhaust, does anyone know if this helps me or does this also increase power?

are you a current P-Plater?

Then i believe, according to their site, that we are still allowed modifications to our cars, as long as they are legal. ie legal limit exhaust etc

You'll just have to contact vicroads and ask on whats going on...

These cars are restricted under current PPlate law if anyone wondering.

no i am not a current p plater. i am 17 turning 18 on the 3rd of july this year

if the muffler modification does not add power then there is no reason i see that i should not be able to get car.

hrm i guess you'll just have to call up vicroads and ask what they mean by engine modifications.

Although, I doubt police will know how a standard muffler looks for every model car. As long as it aint a 20inch fart cannon.

But i could be wrong

That sucks. Just 2 days after the date for you.

BTW First Post. Long time lurker. Hello everybody.

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
