i was just looking up specs on r33's the other day and i noticed that some came with a 5spd auto instead of a 4spd like in my car. i also noticed this is only in N/A cars, namely the GTS25 TYPE G and TYPE G SE sedans and the GTS25 AND THE GTS25 TYPE S coupes. im assuming they are series ones, since there is no mention of any of these post '96.

now to get to the point. is it feasible to chuck one of these in a turbo model coupe of the same time frame? i have a auto type m, and purely in the interest of fuel economy i am considering this. few q's to guide discussion:

1 how hard are they to find?

2 are they different in any way to the turbo slushie? difference b/n sedan and coupe?(dimension, weight, fitment etc)

3 cost wise is it cheaper or more expensive than a manual conversion? (guessing cheaper)

4 will i have to change my ecu to run it?

I've heard of it before in r33s, its probably quite rare. I also read somewhere the trans is physically longer too so you will need a shorter drive shaft. THe only trans i've found that "seems" to match this description is "RE5R01A or RE5R05A" - most likely the ones in the r33s - there is also a "Jatco JR507E transmission - but I think this is for later cars like the 350Z"

Unfortunately all I can recommend is more googling in regards to your conversion - I have no more info :(

i had one in my old 4 door n/a, it has D 3 2, instead of D 2 1, if that makes sense. (so i figured it was)

(it was annoying doing a burnout cos id chuck it in 2nd being the lowest and it would spin up first, then change to 2nd once the revs got high enough and being a n/a it would just bog down and go fail.)

the thing is id count the gears and i could still only count 4 + the over drive :s weird.

i wouldnt really bother, my old auto box was shit house anyway.

although cruising at 110 with over drive on it would sit pretty low from memory compared to my manual. 2000-2500rpm lower ruffly

but yer thats all my experience with it..

You won't make it work with the 4 speed TCU. Would need something that can handle the extra solenoid(s).

I should point out that the NA autos (and probably the 5 speed in particular) probably won't hold up to the torque of a 2.5 turbo for very long. The 4 speeder is a marginal enough proposition behind a stock 25DET, let along a boosted up one (and how many standard ones are still running around?).

Yeah that's what a few people have said, there is a few standard ones around still but people want way too much for them, rather do a manual conversion for a few extra hundred, but just a daily do wouldn't mind keeping it a auto for now but the gear ratios look pretty good where 1st in the 5 speed is 3.8xx and 1st in the 4 speed is 2.5xx and then top gear in each us 0.69, as far as I can see tho the wiring for both are the same but happy to get a ecu to get it to work but can't find any

    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.  
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it  
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
