Hey guys,

Im currently in the process of getting coilovers and Needed to check if it was legal as It needed to comply with ADR rules for insurance purposes.

This is what ive found.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/dow...s/vsi/vsi06.pdf

Rta clearly states any suspension mod is fine unless it is any of the 5 listed. Which coilovers as far as I know is not.

Hope that clears it up a little for people who are searching for the same answer.

The coilovers have to meet ADR regulations or be passed in US or Europe and have to be designed for street use and not modified to suit your vehicle. That is if your suspension violates the requirements set by the RTA.

Book mark that page, Id say even print it as it may be useful if you've found yourself at a defect station.

Cheers

Nathaniel

It always makes me laugh when i hear ppl say that they were told coil overs are illegal on Skylines. They come from the factory with coil overs. So does that mean they are illegal straight off the showroom floor. I understand generall what ppl mean is heigh adjustable coilover shocks...but it seems pretty silly to be able to ban the use of coil overs. its like saying that any car with leaf springs needs to be taken off the road. LOL although some may agree with that comment :P

sorry to say, but the rules in japan and australia are totally different.

Wouldnt matter if your car is standard with coilovers or not. Has to comply against rules here.

Im not saying australian rules say no to coilovers.. But im simply stating that rules there and here are different.

Thats why we have compliance also!!

just my 2 cents..

Yeh, i dont understand what you are saying?

If they want to make the use of aftermarket, height adjustable coil overs lillegal then they need to define the term better. At present saying coil overs are illegal is like saying a turbo is illegal. The definition includes std Nissan equipment, which is a turbo...so far too broad a definition, otherwise we would all be driving RB20/25/26DE cars.

Unless they want to convert all independent wishbone Skylines into macpherons sturts liek S13s/R31 etc... and this would have to be done at compliance :domokun:

Or like alot of complience vehicles the parts are swaped from complied vehicles or spares moddified to pass complience and then the "illegal cars" are sold at a higher amount..

good business really.

On the subject .. are height adjustables illegal because I didnt find from whats listed that they are .. they are however if you lower it under 10cm from lowest body part?? ive now got the details in my car so i hope i dont have to pull it out .. otherwise they'll pin me for everything

Practically every friggin vehicle on the road has 'coilovers'.. that is a spring over a shock absorber.. so the rule doesn't make any sense, and I doubt it's being interpreted here the correct way. I am sure the main thing they want to stop is dodgy ebay 'coilover' systems being sold here, which are pieces of crap and may be dangerous. Probably not so stupid.

The coilovers have to meet ADR regulations or be passed in US or Europe

The key part is the last two.. I'm sure most of them out there have been passed to various applicable Euro or US standards. Even if not, black paint would do wonders..

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
