Hi guys, im just wondering as the title says if i can run my car on normal unleaded. I have heard a lot about increased risk of detonation and things, and a lot of people tell me better safe than sorry. but im still at school and im struggling to afford to fill her up, so how necessary is it?

Sorry if this has been discussed before

Any experience with problems asociated with running stock cars on normal unleaded would be appreciated, my car is a r33 gts25t completely stock

cheers

Jeremy

Generally, the higher the octane level, the lower the chance of detonation. Detonation damages your engine internals. Your car WILL run on 91 octane, but it's not smart to do so. If you HAVE to run the car on 91, then keep it below 5000rpm and lay off the boost.

The difference is only 10c per litre... Thats only like $6-7 per tank... Buy "home brand" bread and milk instead and give your car some decent juice man :D

The quality of fuel in Japan is higher than here too. Australian premium fuel is pretty much comparable to standard fuel in Japan from what i understand. That means that our standard fuel is definitely not sufficient to run a 'performance' car built in Japan, and designed for Japanese fuel.

Hope this helps..

Hi...

I own a 1995 R33 GTSt.

I use 91 RON fuel....always have...with never an issue to speak of......

.......in my 1996 Briggs and Stratton mower.

Would it be alright to run 91 for weekdays and then fill up with 98 for the weekends? As in use the 91 for daily(no boosting) and 98 when you want to give it a trash? I would assume it'll be fine aslong as you keep it off boost.

Yes it would be alright. It would be totally fine to put inferior petrol in your car. Nothing bad will happen. There you go, is that the answer you were looking for?

*Disclaimer* I am not responsible for rebuilding your engine

think of it this way, your saving money by going cheap on petrol and causing damage to your engine. As someone said your only saving about $6-7 per tank and when your engine dies you will have to shell out 50x more then you have saved so far on petrol on an engine rebuild.

Dont be stingey

Hi...

I use to own a 1992 S13 sr20det

I used 91 RON fuel....always did...with never an issue to speak of......

.......oh, except for when the motor detonated and up 'n stopped one evening...$$$$$$

Seeing that we're on the topic of what type of petrol to use, what would happen if we were to put diesel fuel into our cars? :O

Actually we're all using diesel (yes, all of us). You get about twice as much torque than unleaded. We didnt want to tell you cos we thought it would blow your mind.

Actually your car will knock even more because the octane level is reduced... The oil in the fuel would probably accumulate in the valves, and screw your cat converter. The engine would definitely overheat and crap itself eventually.

These engines aren't designed to run 91 octane fuel. It would probably cost you more $$$ in poor fuel economy than the added cost of getting 98 octane stuff in the first place.

If you shop at Coles, you can get the discount vouchers to buy Optimax. Woolies/Safeway, you can get Caltex Vortex 95 octane (worst case). Shell probably have a 95 as well.

    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
    • There is a warning that "this thread is super old" but they ignore that anyway...
    • With 10% Ethanol, we're talking 2-3% fuel consumption difference. The emissions reductions and octane boost in my opinion far outweigh this almost non existent loss.    My tanks sitting at 80%. Luckily that should go down fast as I'm on vacation again for the next two weeks.
