perhaps your 300kw skyline is a good example of what a japanese supercar should be. Your burnout avatar gives away as much..

Its performance versus endurance. I think Skylines, Supras, NSXs, RX-7s ect are all made to both have a fair amount of kick without compromising too much on reliability. Think about it, how many Ferraris and Lamborghinis lasting +100,000kms? They aren't designed to, they are designed to go hard and not much else. For a good time not a long time. Now hands up all with Skylines that have gone past the 100,000km mark.

Also, the last GT-R that was made was (according to Redbook, not 100% sure if its true) was 2000. To compare it to the latest Fords, Holdens and BMWs seems a little unfair. A 2000 VT Series 2 SS Commodore put out 220kWs standard. Compare that to the Skyline's "208kWs" and it brings it into prospective a little.

I have to agree though, there seems to be a trend lately that all car manufacturers seem to be steering away from turbo charged performance vehicles, not just Japanese ones. Hopefully the new GT-R will change that. :)

I wouldn't say that they weren't designed to get to 100 000km mark, it's just that people don't want to age a car which cost them $250K+

I think it's 2 things. First and most obvious, the Japanese power (straight from the factory) restriction has only recently been lifted. Before, pretty much any power rating could not exceed 206kW out of the show room. That's why Japanese maunfacturers made their cars with so much more potential in mind. :D

Secondly it's brand perception. Lexus might get away with a $150,000k sports car, the Nissan GTR might too but that's where it ends. People in this day and age aren't willing to fork out that amount for a Japanese brand that will most likely not hold its value. Tis' a good thing for us poorer blokes that some of the Japanese cars are every bit as good if not better than their more expensive European counterparts as far as performance goes. :) You tend to get less luxury in the Japanese brands though.

But if I had the choice between the new GTR and the 997 Porsche turbo, I would choose the Porsche no contest. The new GTR still looks odd especially from the front. :(

I personally believe we will not see such a car due to the amount of money spent on performance upgrades and after market products.

Believe it or not, just about all performance car companies have their hand in the after market product companies.

This in untrue. Performance cars that came out of the showrooms routinely had more than 206kw. That was just a quoted figure to comply with regulations that was never severely policed. Cars often had more than 250kw out of the box.

Those who think brawn over brains are missing the point here, by the way. The Kw and Hp junkie brigade just dont get it.

Careful.

You'd better not set him off, or his defensiveness at being unable to detect actual discrimination from a colloquialism (similar to his inability to detect satire) will see him riding the Waaaahmbulance to the nearest mod to have your thread deleted.

that fact is Ferrari's owner is scheduled for engine rebuilt every 30000km! approx $20000 per services!

holy crap! Thats crazy!!!

We dont care that your skyline built in japan is on the 'verge' of having as much power as a back yard built skyline in Australia.

Big wooop. we dont need to go to japan to find those.. there are plenty of them around here. If you dont have any input for the thread then please dont post in here. Go ruin someone else's threads.

 Dude, do you have any idea how much bigger your e-penis just got when you typed that shit?! :) ... :)

Back to the topic, I think the reason has basically been touched on here by a few people...

1 - The 206kW power restriction. Yes I realise it wasnt policed heavily, but that would partly be because when it was broken, it wasnt broken by huge amounts. If someone made a 350-400kW car, Im sure they wouldnt have overlooked it as easily.

2 - Costs. To build and sell a very high powered car, it becomes reasonably costly, in terms of R&D, when you aren't planning on selling too many. Also, when you can buy a GTR with 206kW for what, $150,000? when new in Japan, how on earth could they reasonably price a car making double or more power?

If it was even close to the same price, absolutely noone would have bought the GTR simply on the basis they could have a car making significantly more power for not much more coin.

3 - Lack of a need. Japanese car manufacturers make plenty from selling cheaper, slower models. The Corolla is one of the best selling cars (if not the best?). Why would they spend huge dollars making a car that probably wont sell much at all given the price tag compared to the brand name you get with it, when it makes more financial sense to be improving their position in the small to medium sized car market?

Its a shame, but basically there just isnt really a need for a high powered Japanese supercar and I guess thats a large part of why there isnt one.

As much as we might like to think otherwise, car companies arent just there to make cars that please what we car enthusiasts might want, theyre there to make a profit. And unfortunately, regular everyday car buyers who dont want high powered supercars to drive to school, work and the shops in, are the ones in the majority

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
