having just installed a jj front mount and upping boost to 10psi i've noticed that when flooring it i don't get great response and up around the 4500-5500 rev range i get a series of little pops.

I used to get some louder pops when changing gears ever since i put my exhaust on, but these are much quieter and there's more of them. still get regular backfires when changing gears with a bit of throttle and i think they're a bit louder too.

mods are simple:

fmic

ces split dump+front

nismo cat-back

...gutted cat (i only did it to see what it was like til i get a catco i swear!!)

ebay manual boost controller running 10psi

apexi pod - no cold air box yet

just completed my 100k service too and i'm pretty sure the timing is all good cos it runs beautifully smooth other than this issue.

fuel filter is only 2000km old also, but i haven't checked/changed the plugs yet nor have i inspected the coil packs.

so i actually just want to know what the pops are - i'm guessing misfiring? what does 'pinging' sound like?

I'm guessing the remedy could be anything from plus->coilpacks->fuel pressure->management right?

I haven't changed

hmmm so two choices....oh well. i suppose i need to do both (plugs and coilpacks and get some management - thinking emanage ultimate at this stage) so i guess i just need to choose one to start with! $$$$ hey isn't there a thread about making the standard coilpacks tougher? might try that or get the jjr ones!

thanks guys

Ah yeah I forgot R33s had R&R from the stock ECU, but if it does turn out to be coilpacks I had the same problem on my R32 and instead of spending $600 on SplitFires I bought a $11 industrial grade hi temp proof silicone from Bunnings and covered them up in it and havent had one missfire since and I run 18psi :whistling:

sweet - what part of the coilpack exactly do you cover up? photos anyone??

I hads the same identical issue, soon as i upgraded my exhaust/fmic i noticed the "popping" increased in ferocity, checked s/plugs, siliconed the coil packs up, slight difference , but it wasnt until i got my pwr fc that it became evident that it was my standard ecu going into R&R mode, get an engine management system in my opinion, the rebroad minded persons will speak for themselves

i have that slight popping/backfire between gears and stuff, and i must say i like it.

a few of my mates always say that everytime it pops/backfires, it always spits a flame.

they love it :whistling:

That "Popping" is actually misfire, it is not good dude, no matter what it looks like

theres a high chance it's not r&r. its probably the stock ecu running the mixtures way too rich. or the coil/spark issue that is very common.

ppl seem to brand everything r&r around here, but on 10psi, i dont think so

here's a pic of my coils, they're drying right now. i started getting a miss at 12 psi

as you can see i covered the whole underside, just to cover my ass. i also cleaned the contact area, thats bright gold now. it was a very dull grey before.

make sure you only use selleys 401 silicone.

lol some of the crap you come out with cracks me up

You like all the shit that wrecks your car....

When I had my 33 It had a gutted cat and it used to shoot flames! Ha ha, the only reason I gutted it was the fact the inside fell apart, was a 3 inch nismo cat, only had two sections of substrate in it, both around 4in thick, one had broken away, rattled like a b*tch.

Back to the question on hand. Get some Selleys 401 Hi Temp Sealant/adhesive to seal up coil packs or spend $600 and get some splitfires.

Thats what i used to think with my bros gtst. I couldnt believe it was the ecu, so we re-gapped the spark plug, put brand new splitfire coils in and still it was there. And it would do it even if it wasnt on full boost, as in if it was coming on to boost and you hold it at 3-4psi through out the rev range it would still splutter, miss and surge depending on how it would feel and other times it would be fine. Then he just bit the bullet and got a power fc and straight away the extra CLEAN power you get, bloody amazing, no hesitation no nothing it just pulled right through to limiter. And he only had an exhaust and fmic.

While there could be just a plug gap or coil problem with the above, i would bet that the ecu is playing a big part, they just dont like anything but a completely stock engine.

i had to get my plugs re-gapped for my FMIC coz i had the same problem, and if ur coilpacks are shagged then silicon, stickie tape, baby oil or any of the other "remedies" for it will probably not last. the guys at mercury motor sports said that if u wonna boost your car then upgrade your coils and get the right gapped plugs so the spark doesn't blow out.

P.S the is a MacGyver thread to try and fix up ur coilpacks - http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...l=fix+coilpacks

hey thanks for that! the pic is perfect!

i'll definitely give this a go and probably replace the plugs first - then if the problem persists, the money i've saved not buying new coilpacks can go towards an emanage or something.

cheers!!

what are your plug gaps right now? dont forget, if you wanna boost, even to 10psi, you need 0.8mm gaps. standard spec is 1.1mm

it may well be ecu, but this is a cheap way to eliminate at least the coils as the issue.

pinging sounds like this.

glass coffee jar.

regular glass marble that you used to play with as kids

put it in the jar.

put the lid on the jar.

shake the jar around..

that's the sound of audible pinging.

which means that it has been pinging for a long time before that which means you've already done alot of damage.

Hey buddy this happened to me a few weeks ago after upping the boost. Big chance this is the problem. All I did was turn mine back down and its all good. Don't even think about buying anything to fix these other possible problems. Turn your boost down first and go from there.

Im totally new to the Skyline/Turbo scene, but by the sounds of it, basically leaving the boost at stock levels untill you get Engine Management sounds like the way to go, even if you have FMIC, full exhaust, Intake etc..? (figured starting another thread was pointless, so ill jack this a tad.. :D )

Is it neccissary to re-gap the plugs to 0.8 when you just have intake and exhaust ( split dump/front, de-cat and catback)? Just wanna make sure im doing everything right :sorcerer:

EDIT: Ignore me. Like 10 topics down was a 10 page thread that was hellova helpfull. Very interesting too!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the same problems as well.. but only happens during the night or when it's cold n give that extra PSI...

Sometimes it doesn't even miss but when it does it's shocking

Changed my Plug to Iridiums n got them gapped to 0.65 was Ok then when i drove it @ night when cold it missed Bad. Changed the Fuel filter also recently didn't really help and now in the process of getting a new Oxygen sensor.

I can get some Splitfires on my nextpay or just get my PowerFC in and get it tuned...

What do u guys reckon??? i don't really wanna get it tuned n find out my Coilpacks r stuffed or just get it tuned anyway to c if it will fix it

Car is Series 2 R33, FMIC, 3" Turbo Back, Pod, 10-11psi stock turbo.

    • An update regarding the registration with the DVLA I sent off the paperwork the day after I collected the car from the port, two weeks later it was all returned with a letter explaining they have rejected the application. This was because the cheque was £20 short for the road tax (I used a price list I found online). Nevermind it is what it is, it was sent back to them the following day with a new cheque. Fast forward another 2 weeks or so, I called them for an update to be told it had been rejected. Yesterday (16th September) I received the documents back along with another letter, this time it was because I didn't put an X in one box on the V750 (personalised number plate certificate), which declared that I had the rights to the personalised number plate. Why this wasn't mentioned in the first rejection letter, I don't know, but it could have saved this headache. The documents were sent back today, so fingers crossed third times a charm and it'll FINALLY be registered on the road just in time for the bad weather (woohoo!) To cheer myself up I lowered the front 25mm, was sick of seeing it sit like a monster truck. No idea how much clearance I'll have getting on and off the driveway, I'll worry about that when I can actually drive it
    • You're going to miss not worrying about rust in the strut towers like the Skyline shitboxes out there
    • A few little updates that weren't filmed due to not taking long to do or not interesting enough for their own video. My new K&N Air Filter arrived, I went with an RU-4180 which matched the dimensions of the universal cone filter the car originally had.  The battery had gone flat, while that was charging I tidied up the spaghetti wiring at the bulk head and down the sides of the engine Next job was to swap the stereo The Kenwood harness had the female ISO plugs cut off and the male ISO plugs cut off the adaptor loom and joined with bullet connectors. I ordered in a repair loom through work and re-did it all. New Kenwood unit installed (Android Auto, DAB, Bluetooth, Reverse Camera) The bonnet/hood gas struts have been poor since collecting the car. I couldn't find any suitable replacements locally so took a chance on a pair from AliExpress.  The originals don't use a retaining clip to secure the cup onto the ball fixture, would explain why I struggled for 10-15mins trying to pry off the cups. The ball fixtures unscrew using a 12mm spanner, new ones are the same size. Sadly no photo of them fitted, you're not missing much lol The dished Momo steering wheel got replaced with my Momo Tuner, turns out I ordered counter sunk bolts for the horn trim ring (like they normally are for the steering wheel) instead of allen cap (flat seat)  A terrible photo of a Quaife style gear shift knob I've had stashed in my tool box for many years after purchasing the incorrect thread size (I can see a pattern emerging with ordering incorrect parts...) Also threw in a cup holder and a (empty) Boss Coffee can, because why not
    • GT-R clearly the better choice! The 300 is certainly not insaly fast but has a decent amount of poke. Does a nice little drift around the corners with a decent amount of throttle. It's VERY predictable in a slide too.  Feels so progressive! People probably presume there's a 25 year old driving it based on my behaviour this week! 🤣
    • Yeah Jap import. Fairlady Z then! I'm a bit the same.  They've been on my radar for a fair while but then just impulsively decided to buy one!  Was going to just buy an NA and add turbos to it later but decided to save the f'ing around and just buy the turbo version.
