.............why is everyone talking so SLOW after Targa? Ahhh.....a week later and all is well - everyone is talking about normal again.

Why do we love skylines?.....cause we can thrash the shit out of them, over and over and over and they still come back with " is that the best you can do?"

My little RB20 was smokey before the event - and after numerous tests we couldn't work out wether it was the turbo or engine.

What the hell - just run it and see what happens. After finishing 30th/ classic outright last year I was determined to get in the top 20 OR bust it.

EVERY gear change was on the rev limiter 7500 on every stage.

After day 3 the GCG hi-flow shit itself - on with a standard (the ceramic one) turbo for last 2 big days.

Day 4 ran at 1 bar....lost a few places - but still in top 20 - sorta happy but with 3 cars within a minute behind me things had to change.

Day 5 WTF screw open the bleed a few turns. All day including the longest stage of 47 klm/23 mins it was on 1.3 bar and lived fine.

The car went like a jet....got me and the ballast (105kg) to 15th. Pretty happy with that. And the ballast (Keith) was fantastic. :)

Well done MP SB KB.

NB The engine was only so so as well - it still blew shit loads of smoke after turbo change. Tuff little shiters those RB's

Great to hear everyone had such a good experience, this would be one of the very first years people aren't saying to me 'had a great time, BUT...'

There are always things to be fine tuned and improved, which we will do, but clearly we're on the right track to an even better event next year!

PS. Bring on the R35 fleet in '09!

PPS. Now I've finally got some time to get my own project back on track... still thinking I should have got another Skyline though!

Had to breifly tow the RX7 yesterday and we subbed the radiator support for a tow hook as most of the front end has been removed for the time being and its basically a shell with an engine... the tow strap actually cut right through the radiator support... didn't break the welds, but I now have a two pice support bar!

Not sure if its alloy or just really light tin/steel, but that along with heaps of factory alloy components and weigh saving measures like holes drilled into steel plating and use of plastic instead of sheet metal you can really see the two very different ways of making a Japanese performance car - Nissan stuffed the GTR with technology. instead Mazda just threw it out and made it light!

Wholly Guackamolli she does sound light!, And that my friend, is the essence of a good package ;)

I really noticed even the modest (50kg or so) weight saving in the white 34 in comparison to the blue 34.

Whilst the GTR is a great thing, you're always conscious of the weight and the punishment that puts the tyres through, not to mention when she starts to get away a little bit, she has lots of momentum :P Witness our huge moment on Cethana! LOL

I've gotta say I'm really looking forward to seeing your car all done, it's going to be a real nice thing ;)

So..... was I right about the Turbo???? Or does it need to be somewhere in between?

You were right about the turbo - but motor still smokes a lot on start-up. Copmpression test (hot) pre targa was 165 for 5 clys and no.3 was 140. Will do another one soon but I reckon prob aftermarth of TT07 when chased a high end miss for 4 days and ended up being a F......fuel filter. The ETG showed running around 850c then compared to 730c now - reckon I nipped a piston/ring.

No worries I have a big buck ($600) engine swinging on hoist ready to go in. Bloody expensive RB's (ha).

Me again, I just wanted to take the chance and publicly thank and congratulate Tim (PHaT MR30) on a fantastic effort over the targa fortnight.

Tim took a huge blind leap by jumping in the silly seat with me, not knowing me well, and never having driven with me or experienced the car. That took alot of guts and is certainly not something that many people would do I'm sure.

Our 4 days of Recce in the Nuss was a ball, and you took in the information and changes to your calls I needed like some giant over-grown Sponge Bob Square pants!

Thanks for not screaming at me when i was struggling with the gear shift issues for the first couple of days, and thanks again for showing faith in me and not getting straight out of the car out after a couple of "double seat grab" moments. LOL

I think you've morphed into a top nav mate, and if we don't get a campaign together for next year, then I'm certain that if you put your feelers out you'll land a good gig in a good car :domokun:

This whole motorsport thing reminds me how fortunate we are to be able to compete in it, with the bonus of meeting some first-quality people along the way :(

So if anyone needs a good nav, with balls of steel, get it contact with Tim..........

I should also publically thank Ben, I was actually quite worried to begin with getting in a car with someone I had never really met, I didn't know his background in motorsport other than a few Targas navigating.

4 days recceing soon confirmed it for me, this guy has some idea of whats going on.

I think after completing the event I can quite comfortably say I have never been in a car before with someone who once helmets are on, is so calm, he did all the right things, knew what to do when things go slightly wrong. And his driving? SMOOTH lines! It certainly makes you feel alot more comfortable to be sitting alongside someone who drives like this! Definately some of the best driving I have experienced!

I think given the right equipment and opportunities Ben would be a certain force to be reckoned with.

And a word of advice, stick to driving mate, your GOLD!

    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.  
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
