Hey people,

I'm looking at buying or building a house and I need some opinions.

Do you think its best to buy an older not so nice house on a 600-700square meter block Or...

Build a house through Devine homes for the same amount of $ but have a 300Square meter block and have less room to move...but be in a brand new estate across from a creek/reserve

Depends a lot on how you want to live (if you're going to actually live in it). Old house on big block might be good if you like cutting lawns and doing lots of repair work. Also good if you want to do demolition work and build 2 or more in it's place.

New place on small block might be good for you if you like everything new with small yard (= next to no upkeep).

We just bought a house in Fulham Gardens on a small block with artificial lawn and already landscaped with automatic watering system and for me these were big +'s.

I love the idea of having a new house but I dont know how I will cope being boxed in next to other houses...

Then again i dont want to spend heaps of money doing repairs on an old house. The gardening doesnt worry me. I kinda want chickens and a vegie patch but that wont happen on a small block.

The chicken and Vegie patch could be a phase....

Not have a double garage would suck... but in a new estate there shouldnt be bad crime...

I have to give devine a yes or no by monday.

My new place has double lock up garage, ducted RC AC, Alarm, Automatic watering system, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, extra living area, smeg stove/oven/dishwasher, 9 ft ceilings ect ect.... :D

Penny, I absolutely love living in a new home - I highly recommend it. No maintenance, little garden work, everything opens and closes properly, and generally just nice to live in.

Older homes (in my experience) are quite the opposite.

It really comes down to can you live without the big yard. But the other side of that coin in, do you have lots of free time to enjoy a yard? If you are like me you rarely head outside, so the lack of a huge yard is not a massive issue.

The other option is try to find a decent size block to build on - something 450sqm is normally only a modest price increase over a 300sqm block. Often, even in new developments there are irregular blocks tucked away in corners that are bigger blocks that are similar price to the smaller ones. Maybe have the best of both worlds and try to get one of those.

Thanks Andrew,

Any advise helps me at the moment! Such a big step and im so unsure...

The only blocks left in this new Devine estate are the 300square meter ones. I can wait for the second release but then prices may jump up and I'll miss out on the First Home Owners Grant.

The area is called Evanston Gardens, its pretty much Gawler. At the moment its surrounded by paddocks which is much better then being next door to Davoren Park or Smithfield like lots of the other Northern estates are.

I dont really spend much time outside where I am now, my dog does... but I walk him every night so it shouldnt affect him.

And stolen their t.v.

And hung out at the Hollywood or Elizabef for hours on end

And smoked weed since he was 12 cos his mum and dad do

And had his first fist fight when he was 6 - when he used to wear his Holden jacket 24 hours a day ...

    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
