Hi :)

I have a 1989 GTS R31, :/

The problem I have is that both the front and back HICAS motors that sit above the shocks have been removed by the previous owner and the HICAS warning lights are on.

When I bought the car it had a switch installed under the dash which I was told, tricked the HICAS into thinking it was still there, recently i smelt somethng funny in the car and I found the wiring was all burnt out. I removed it and now i'm not sure where to connect the new wiring..... If anyone can give me some advice that would be great......

Secondly my car will not start anymore (since the wiring burnt out), it was running fine... now it just turns over, its got spark, the computer's got power, the fuel pump is working but still no luck. Do you think that the HICAS problem could be related to this? A freind was saying that it might be a possibility but i'm not 100% convinced . I love my car but i'm dissapointed that i'm having so many problems. If any one has any suggestions I'd be so grateful. :P

Thanks

Love the R31's, used to have a sexy s3 silhouette.

Whether or not the HICAS lights are on or off the car should start (just a pig to drive without a lockbar). If it happened right after you pulled the wiring out then thats definately your problem. Can you remember where the wires ran to? If the cars cranking over, make sure you have power to the coil - do the dash lights come on when your cranking the engine over? Wiring schematics for the car can be found on www.r31skylineclub.com. If you live on the GC i might be able to give u a hand

If you have spark and fuel and compression (I'm guessing you have compression - burnt out wiring won't affect that), then the engine should start. Can you hear the injectors "tick ... tick ... tick ..." when you are cranking the engine?

Hey sorry it's taken me so long to reply I've been so busy with work, The dash lights do come on and I have power to the coil. Thanks for the link to the R31 site for thw wiring schematics. I don't really wanna waste your time working on my car unless you really want to =P

And yes i hear a tick tick tick when i crank the engine over

Do the injectors have a signal or is there a crank signal from the CAS.

Best way to check injectsrs is to use a noid light.

Yes the injectors have a signal and there is a crank signal from the CAS, It just won't start.... Does it make much of a difference if its an NA RB20de with the turbo gear (its running turbo computer).

Thanks

nope she should still run ok (compression ratios just different, weaker g/box, fuel reg? different etc.)

I know u said the fuel pump is working but did u check the voltage and/or fuel pressure? Check the timing also

Even though your getting spark from the CAS it might still be no good. Is the spark regular or irregular? have u checked its internal resistance (think procedure is in the book). Check plug voltages also

Sounds like u may have a bad short in your wiring loom if anything or killed the CAS

Do you know where the wiring was roughly running to under the dash? Was it just hooked to the HICAS light/fusebox?? How many wires etc.????

    • Man, different parts but the same numbers is terrible @dbm7! And it doesn't help that most online shops don't list the part numbers at all. They just give a list of compatible models...
    • Slow when hot could also be because its getting more dynamic compression, OR things are getting a bit tighter once it is all expanded. If it were an earthing issue, typically I'd expect you to have it have issues all the time. Unless it's really a combination of both things. Where the higher compression, and things being a bit tighter, is giving that bit of extra load and you do need a slight clean up on the cables/connections.
    • Yeah, this is one of the most annoying things about nissan part numbers... I've got an unrelated example... Image is of the AT output shaft ~ they have the same part#, but clearly the shaft on the left is beefier design to that on the right ...the difference (essentially) is the 'lighter' shaft on the right, is for engines up to RB25DE (this includes RB20 variants) : the shaft on the left is for RB25/26DET(T)....are they interchangeable? Yes...but obviously one shaft is going to be stronger than the other...and, the lighter shaft is around USD115, but the heavier shaft closer to USD150...same part#... ...epc-data usually tells a tale ~ the amayama listing for 39100-23U60 has a note "Longest side is between 60 and 105 cm" ; no such info is there for 39100-23U70 ...and given the great disparity in price between the 2 parts, it makes me at least curious (to the point of caution) where the 'extra money' went? ...ie; these 2 parts have a cost difference that (to myself at least) isn't explained by 'plastic boot'...ie; with amayama there's AUD700 price difference ...plastic versus rubber?...I'm not seeing it like that...and 60cm ~ 105cm...??...that's a huge disparity....something hinky going on here... I'd try searching by VIN, not model... /2cents
    • I don't know for sure, but I'd expect them all to be interchangeable given the diff end and hub end don't move/change between any C34 series. Often Nissan will change part numbers and the aftermarket follows those year ranges; but the original part number change doesn't mean other parts won't fit. The change could be a change in material, internal parts or even just supplier. For example, all the RB gearbox to engine bolts are no longer available and there is a new part number instead. The only change is they went from cadmium plated bolts to zinc plated due to the issues manufacturing with Cadmium. They look different but work the same.
