Guys,

I'm thinking about buying an R32 GTR but I would like to know people's thoughts on whether it could be a reliable daily driver. I've been reading the threads about maintenance and the lemons that are out there but no one really mentions anything about driving one day in day out.

Assuming you buy a genuine car in the first place with the usual replacement parts added, is there any inherent problem with the engine or componetry that common fails??

The car I'm looking at is modified but all work has been done over here within the last 16months. I've taken it for a good drive and all seems fine. Feels solid on the road, no shakes or noises and the gearbox feels okay.

I don't thrash the crap out of cars (that's what motorbikes are for!) so is there any reason I shouldn't get good longevity out of an R32 even driving it everyday??

Over 3 and a half years, daily driver, put over 80,000k on it now.

Replaced turbos, cv boots etc.

Regular oil changes, etc.

Just cost a bit more than a normal car to get parts sometimes.

These cars were a well put together picec of kit, no pov spec deal. A well sorted one, or well cared for one will last as a daily driver. It depends on what your plans are for the GT-R, if budget is your concern then modifying one is probably not a great idea. I'd go a V-spec for the steel wheel turbs, no mods and then you'd have an enjoyable GT that would maintain alot of its value.

How long do you get out of the turbos? This car I'm looking at has Garrett 2860r turbos and all the major componentry has been replaced or upgraded in the past 12 months. Like I said, I drive pretty conservatively so I'm not stressing the turbos or gearbox compared with someone who just thrashes their car on the weekend.

Also, what is the fuel consumption like on a GTR when their not being pushed hard? I'm sure people are thinking that if I'm worried about trivial things like longevity and fuel use then I should get a Corrolla but I just want to have my cake.....

Should be fine if you take care of it well.

I'd say it's probably better if you do a lot of reading on taking care of the cars so you know what you're getting into.

Any definitely take it to a mechanic to check it out for you, that'll save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

well i have a r33 gtst series 1 for a daily and that thing hasnt given me any problems for the last 2 years.....normal drive during the week and bit of a fun session during the weekend....so my advice would be that if you do as you say and not thrash out the car day in and day out then you will be fine and also the life of the car will be longer

Yes it will be taken care of and not thrashed. The one I like has got a Power Fc with the hand controller so the first thing I'll do is get a sensible safe base tune. Of course I'll have a map for some decent boost and power but it will rarely be used. I want a GTR R32 because I don't think there's better car available for the money. The options for performance seem to be endless...unlike my cash flow unfortunately!! And the Bathurst legend is undeniable. No offence to owners of later models but in my opinion the R32 is king.

Man whats the point in having a gtr with 2860r's if your not gonna thrash it? Everyone thrashes there gtr at somestage there made to be thrashed sometimes you sound like you should have a old classic mustang or something wtf Boost and power that will rarely be used hahah

Good choice of car, I'll have to say :D I'm planning on getting one as well (once I'm off the damnned Ps...) so I would be interested in the responses. From wat I've heard, they're great daily's, expensive, but still great. Only problem is finding a decent one... oh well, nothing good comes easy :down: Good luck with the buy mate.

I can only assume GTSBoy is thinking of the mill up on the wollondilly, no restaurant there any more but they have restored the original steam engine on site and run it every few months, have an annual steampunk festival etc @The Bogan, you came to the wrong town for restaurants. we have a few reasonable asian and indian options but the Paragon is as good as it gets otherwise. That brewery is apparently just opened, been meaning to give it a go some time. The Highlands have plenty of fancy options but I suspect you are more a hearty eater than fancy eater

    • Going by the intake & injectors I'd be guessing it's a DE, check the head casting number, should be 5L8 on a DET, 5L7 I think is the DE number.
