Ok,

before you jump in saying use the search function, i would like to let you know i have and didnt find anything exactly what i was after..

When i brake i find that my front brakes squeek, sorta on and off, sometimes on, now i know the pads are not fully run down...

however, my first question is, if these werent replaced at compliance, is it possible for the pads to become stale after a while if they have been on the car for a while without much use?

and secondly, i have slotted stock rotors, and was thinking about getting them machined to fix this problem, as it annoys me... but i dont want to go in spending money if i dont have to.. as in if i do machine them and it doesnt fix i wont be happy

comments appreciated

Michael

Hi Michael,

I had a squeaking problem that sounds a little bit like yours on my WRX which if I'm not mistaken has a very similar brake setup to your GTS-T. Mine would squeak at random times but not when I applied them. I had just fitted new pads (Bendix Ultimates) which were slightly larger than the OEM pads and the lip around the edge of my moderately worn rotors had worn a groove on the outer edge of the new pads. I took the rotors off and got the lip machined off for about $25 and the squeal was gone.

If this sounds like what's happening to you and you have got a distinct lip around the outer edge of your rotor then machining them could be the way to go.

Hope this helps,

Ben

I'm pretty sure there's no dramas machining a slotted rotor Duncan, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm now using Bradi slotted rotors which will probably get to the wear limit or crack before I need to machine them.

Not sure about slotted/cross drilled though. Wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft stick.

so far on all of my cars i have totally eliminated all squeeling by using the "stop squeel" compound. Its available from most automotive stores, is fluroescent orange, and comes in a bottle of maybe 200 or 300 mLs (there abouts). Its like a high temp silicon compound and you put it between the back of the pad and the antisqueel shim or brake caliper, and hush, it's all gone. It's fixed 3 out of 3 for me so far so could be a cheap fix for you.

Your pads could just be glazed. Do a search in a thread started by DBA steve a while ago called "Disc Rotors". The fix was something like pulling your pads out and giving them a light sand back with emery paper. Check out the thread for more detailed (and more importantly) accurate info :(

    • Pads for R32 GTS-t, R32 GT-R non V-Spec (Sumitomo), R33 GTS-t and R34 GT-t are all interchangeable. R34 GT uses a 2x piston caliper, hence it didn't fit.

    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
    • Hi. Can someone tell me what brakes(and mainly WHERE) can i buy brakes on R34 GTT? I bought some EBC which SHOULD go on my car(i have GT but it has GTT brakes) but it does not fit, Brakes are "too" small(296mm) Are 310mm be good or? I have 17 inch wheel so no "big boys" but for me driving i just need one that fits and i can get here in EU/Czech.
