Hi all. Have a prob...or two.

Under heavy breaking in having a great deal of "shudder" at the front end. The dash, trans and s/wheel all shakes like hell esp when im breaking from 80kms or above.

Wondering if this is due to small / inadequate breaks and/or rotor setup??

I know it might sound stupid but if i were to go for bigger rotors and pads do i need to change any of the standard setup at the front end? Also if anyone has upgraded their N/A's rotors and pads what are the costs involved??

Any help would be awesome, i have taken heaps of pics of my current setup as i just changed my front suspension, if they will help please let me know and ill post em'

Gday mate,

I had the same prob, pretty much sounds like your rotors need to be machined, if there is enough meat left on them, this normally happens after a while under heavy braking, not due to inadequate brakes or rotors, this is very cheap to fix up btw...

I am in the process of updating my brakes and rotors. I bought some turbo brakes for a couple of hundred I think...like 200 ... I need some dba slotted rotors ..couple hundred and some pads...80? 100? 150?, its not too expensive all over.

it is a good upgrade to do, but especially because I have converted the car to turbo and am still on stock n/a brakes.

hope this helps a little.

Adam

Do you by any chance have the habit of leaving your foot on the brake pedal when stationary, at a set of lights or an intersection etc??

If so, you may have suffered "pad transference" where a small amount of pad material literally transfers to the disc surface, causing a high spot & a similar feeling to a warped disc. Get in the habit of NEVER sitting with any pressure on the brake pedal whilst the vehicle is stationary, use the handbrake instead if you have to. To fix, do a handful of hard stops (without coming to a halt) & you should wear the high-spots down IF it's a buildup prob. If they are indeed warped, machining is the only real fix.

To stop it happening again , try being off the pedal alltogether even before the vehicle comes to a stop. Sounds stupid maybe, but I'm talking within a few wheel rotations, not from speed etc :P

Thanks guys for the replyies.

I def dont sit on the brakes at the lights. Although my car is an auto i use the gears (sometimes) and always sit in neutral at the lights or when stationary.

Here is a pic of the driver side rotor....what do you guys think??

And another view

(worth machining or.....????)

So where i can go to get the disc/rotors machined...........local car tuner (ultra tune, midas, etc etc or.....?)

Also ppl, price wise New rotors Vs. machining them???

Again thanks guys for the advise!

lol, funny mate... they look as smooth as a baby's bumb... no way to really be able to see from a pic..

you could take them to almost any automotive mechanic/tuner and they will know the places to take them to be machined....

if you want a rough idea of how much for some rotors have a look at this group buy...

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Rd...-2-t158914.html

I actually spoke to rsd7 for a set of slotted non turbo rotors and he quoted me

"7691S $280 front pairs, 7692S $275 rear pairs, all delivered"... so looking at about $555 delivered

hope this helps... btw... gettting the rotors machined is cheap as chips...

Thanks a heap for the info Adam!

Ive sent a pm to rsd7 re front rotors and awaiting a response!

Also ive spoken to superchap auto (via their net sales rep) and they have quoted me:

dba 953 $129.99 ea +freight, dba 953sl/ sr $ 179.99ea +freight and dba 953x $236.36 + freight

Not bad if your just after relacement rotors, i think they are standard but thats a good price i think!

Kind regards, Evan

happy to help mate,

good to know that the local supercheap stores also cater for us if neccessary. also... while ur at it check ur pads if they need doing to....from memory they can't be any thinner then 8mm-9mm I believe.

I can't remember what brands are good but don't be suckered into the first ones you see that say they are great for stopping etc etc... i've found ive gotten alot of brake dust and screeches with those types.... do a little research on them... can't hurt

Cheers,

Adam

    • This. A 3d wheel alignment is like $120...just take it to the shop. Since theres probably multiple adjustments that need to be made after changing something. Mine has front/rear lower arms, traction rods, tension rods, camber arms, toe arms, front upper arms, hicas kit, sway bars and coilovers. I measure from the edge of the bolt holes on the originals and set the same length on all the adjustable stuff to dial it as close as I could to OEM. Took it straight for alignment; it didnt feel right at all...after alignment, it feels perfect. Similarly i've just changed the springs on another car; and I still needed multiple adjustments to bring it back in spec.

    • Its a well known brand in New Zealand; its a rebrand of the Rhino RAV3.  I don't know what the wiring difference *is* between the rev.1 (installed about 15 years ago) and rev.2; but as you say I would think its reasonable that it uses the same immobiliser relay circuits. I had a look but couldnt see a similar harness; but didnt move things around since I didnt want to mess with it   It was one of AVS well known Authorised Installers; I spoke to AVS themselves about it but theyre unsure hence seeking advice more so from the skyline community who are more familiar with the actual car and its wiring. Im in Auckland; but the installer is on the other side of the city so hes very reluctant to come back to even look at it to confirm something isnt connected into the wrong wire.  I dont want to drop the name since they *did* do a really good job for the most part. Everything is very tidy and he fully replaced all the alarm wiring, all the sensors, the wiring to the door motors, installed a switch which was never installed in the first place...really happy with the alarm install itself..just not this one issue. We all make mistakes, if it is the alarm, I just want my fuel pump getting proper switched, fused, power as it was; without having to shell out for an auto electrician to switch a wire and tell me it was the alarm.
    • Even with the piston at TDC there was room for it to drop, but I don't think it can drop fully into the cylinder, the problem you have is that you need something pushing against the valve to hold it up so you have enough room to put the new stem seal on and the spring etc.  I used compressed air only because putting rope in the cylinder seemed a bit risky to me, I know people have done it countless times before like this. Overall it's a pain in the ass job. Honestly you'd probably be better off taking the head off because the risk of dropping something in the engine and the finicky-ness of it all is very stressful. If you are going to attempt it though i 10000% recommend a 36050 valve spring/keeper tool. I had both the traditional lever type and after doing 1 cylinder it was absolute pain to get those valve keepers in place, even with 2 people. That 36050 is amazing, you do have to push hard to get them in place but it works perfectly almost every time. Back to my actual issue I think my engine is just tired and old and the rings have gone bad. The comp numbers (cold, no oil) were: Cyl 1 -129psi Cyl 2 - 133psi Cyl 3 - 138psi Cyl 4 - 137psi Cyl 5 - 157psi Cyl 6 - 142psi   Cylinder 5 and 6 having the most carbon on them.
    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
