thats a fair generalisation ash!

by saying that youre saying all R32 GTR's are gonna need to be rebuilt after you buy them!

i would think its not an easy choice to make... AL makes a good point about rwd, but you really have to think about what you want the car for.....

i know its not the same ... but when i went from my r33 gts-t to an R32 gts-4 .... sure it handled alot better round corners with the 4wd ... but comfort wise it wasnt the same! by sitting in the drivers seat of an R32 you dont have the same comfort and luxury feel you get when your in an r33,.... the smooth flowing dash and comfortable seats of the R33 are missing from the R32 i felt.. when i sat in my R32 i knew i was driving an OLD car, not to mention a few more ratles and shakes, but i think the r32 is alot more ... "raw" then the r33.

but then again it really depends on what your looking for in a car... we can't sit here and tell you "yup, go for the GTR" or "nah stay with the 33" because at the end of the day, what i like in a car and what you like in a car, are potentially two very different sets of variables...

Ye i basically am saying that ;)

The number of "cheap" 32 GTR's on the market at the moment is doing nothing more than making engine builders & tuners rich :(

Most people are being attracted to the sub 25k pricing of R32 GTR's and being caught out by their problems.

Also add to the fact the people purchasing these cars are generally younger than the people who would have been buying 32GTR's 3-4 year ago, and hence they are taking a flogging on the street which further enhances the soft point of a 15-20yr old RB26.

The number of RB26 rebuilds ive seen is just going up and up, its certainly not dying off by any means

r32 GTR's are cheap... and cheap for a reason basically.

If you cant afford the rebuild + parts (over 10k), then dont buy a GTR. Simple rule many fail to respect.

Spot on the money. Having come from old (late 80's) performance cars before the Evo that are the same era as the 32, this is generally the case. They may not need doing immediately but is definately something that 15+ years on of performance driving, needs to be budgeted for. Factor in people who havent cared for them before (not everyone has the money to maintain one properly) and the chance is increased of it needing work.

That said, ones that have been worked on, there are some stunning examples out there with several I can think of in the club. I looked at getting one instead of the Evo as the 33 GTR was top end of my budget but needed it for a daily driver and didnt tick enough boxes.

Personally, I would stick with the GTST unless you can get a really good example that has been checked out by a specialist. ;)

The car will not need to rebuilt within the first week unless you are very unlucky or drive it very hard but it is something that needs to budgeted for. Cars of that age will be tired in general, suspension, bushes, components so be prepared. All things wear out eventually and on a car of that age, this is compounded.

There will be good examples out there but they won't be cheap and just because the engine may have been rebuilt, doesnt mean attention has been given to other areas.

I was at kamikaze on saturday (15th) - i go and have a look every few weeks

from memory they dont import r32's anymore nor the series 1 r33's due to the fact that they are not worth selling because of their age

and the fact that all kamikaze cars have a 3 year warranty - 3 year warranty on a 32 gtr to them is just not worth the hassle

ye i know it wont need a rebuild in the first week, suspension, bushes, brake's etc will be changed regardless to get a smoother/safer ride as I've done on my 33. Mods never stop on any car if your into it

things that need changing will be changed, things that don't need too much attention upfront can be left for a while eg: engine - until i get over it and then start playing with modifications

I just don't want the engine to pop after 6 months, if i can find a decent example i will go ahead and buy a GTR if not then my car is booked in for the 7th Jan for some engine work.

CARIZMA on the forums has a white R32 GTR for sale.

Its a 1993 and seems pretty clean, also has rims. $15,000 landed + compliance and on road costs I think they are asking..

If I find the link I will post it up for you.

Edit: fk the R33 off and go with an R32 :)

ill back my my poll answer with comment for clarification. i bought my bnr32 3 months ago it was imported from japan 6 months ago and complied. 88,000 and the first thing i did was take it to grayham west workshops for a proffessional opinion. full survice, timing belt and water pump were done in my first 1000 kms then an apexi power fc followed by grex oil cooler and brass button clutch...... all up car plus work = 25,000 its now reliable and blowing minimal smoke (expected for any turbo car done 60,000 kms plus. ive never been happier with any car and dispite its age... no rattles and the 32 gtr interrior is extremely practical and made for a purpose... simplicity, driving and its neat. seats are beautiful and it stil has the original floor mats.

i wish you all the luck in the world and if u come across a mint unthrashed 32gtr i put my word on it that you will not be dissapointed if u like winding roads e.g. hills. this is the car for you..... my atessa system is untouched and with 255's all round i have no trouble getting sideways flat foot untill front cuts in and flings me forward.

friend has a 33gtst with 220 atw mine is only pulling 200 atw but with the extra torque of the rb26dett i still manage to pass happily!

good luck

stick with the 33. It's a newer car and will generally just give you less hassles. As others have said the old rb26 in 32's is likely to need a rebuild sooner or later and in general many parts and components show thier age. Rubber bushes start to wear out, suspension leaks, and bits and pieces which cant be avoided that have come about pureply from being old. Dont get me wrong there are some great 32 gtr's out there, which have been restored and rebuilt to mint condition and look hawt, but the owners will be the first to tell you thay spent numerous $$ getting it that way. I say keep the gtst for a bit and save for a newer GTR if you really want one. my 2 cents worth...

The 32 will cost you more to run and maintain full stop. My best mate had a R33 gtst and went to a R32 GTR. While he enjoyed the power and handling, it was his daily driver. And R32's arent necessarily 'easy' cars to drive. They are mean cars on the track and have a lot of power, but driving with a heavy duty triple plate clutch in peak hour is tiring after a while. I drove both cars and while the R32 was fun, it wouldnt be my choice for a daily driver. Plus the costs of just replacing parts over time isnt small. Keep in mind you can be comparing a car from 1989 to a car from 1997. R33 gtst parts are cheap and easily available in comparison. Also as said, the R32 will 'feel' like an old car. The R33's are much more comfortable and nicer looking inside.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
