What Events Does Sau Vic Have In The Next Few Months For A Less Experienced Driver?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm seeing plenty of threads about people getting done for speeding or losing there license, I haven't owned my GTR for long but I certainly don't want to give it a test on the streets as getting to 100km/h is boring!

What motorsport (or motorsport like) events does SAU Vic have in the coming months?

I noticed there's a non-SAU advanced driving course that looks interesting, I might be attending that one depending on the work roster.

Eg. skidpan's, motorkana et cetera

Currently I do not have a CAMS license but I can always get one if the event needs it.

I have not driven my new car beyond the legal limits so I want to find out what it can really do :P

Regards,

Gareth

Keep an eye out on the top of the page, for the "sticky", in the EVENTS section (Skylines Australia > Skylines Australia > Victoria > Events).

Topic should be titled something like: "2008 Sau Vic Events Calendar, All 2008 SAU-VIC Club Events by month"

Looking at the previous years; there may be a Calder Track day/night, in January; and a DECA Motorkahna, in February.

It depends on what you mean by "test". Do you want to give it a top speed run, do you want to drive it hard, do you want to slide it around and get it out of shape in the right environment, driving courses?

Top speed runs - currently nothing is specifically done for this by the club (track days certainly give you the option to hit high speeds up near your top speed)

Driving hard - track days that are run with the WRX club. Some of these days (not sure if all) have driver training sessions for the day where you will be in a group with other drivers in the same position. You will have an instructor with you which is usually a club member with experience who gives up part of their day. There are a number of guys who do this in SAU and a lot of information to be absorbed from them.

Sliding around and out of shape - DECA events, while they are not pushed as an event for intentionally getting out of shape, they are forgiving enough in general if you do. There are numerous videos and some on my youtube link in my sig.

Driving courses - Kev from here runs courses with instructors at race tracks which by all accounts are very good with different levels. These are popular with members and I am sure some will post up on here.

Good question to ask though as I am sure others are thinking of it too. If I have missed anything above, others feel free to add. :P

As Al says, keep an eye on the calender that will appear too. Normally a Calder track day in January and DECA February off the top of my head.

Top-speed run does not interest me, I enjoy acceleration and high-speed cornering and testing the limits of my car (excluding the top speed, it would be fun but I don't want to risk blowing my engine up to see how fast it will go).

The last 3 options sound good, I assume everything besides the advanced driver courses require cams license and a helmet? And a fire extinguisher?

My car has bonnet pins so that should cover the secondary bonnet restraint requirement :)

Oh, and skid-pan would be great fun if the club does that kind of thing :)

Thanks for the replies, I'll keep any eye on the events calendar.

Do SAU and WRX club hold joint events or should I check the WRX club's calendar? Are SAU'ers welcome?

Yes CAMS licence or AASA for DECA but getting CAMS is easier as it allows access to all of the SAU Vic events. Helmet, yes and fire extinguisher yes. Bonnet pins surfice, I think. Snowman could confirm though but I believe they will.

Skid pan is great fun and we do that as part of our DECA courses. A map is provided with cone layouts that you navigate round against the clock in the morning and against a mate or other cars in the afternoon. You can also passenger with other cars to meet new people and see how they drive.

SAU and WRX hold joint track days but WRX events in general are not open to SAU members unfortunately. You will find the hardcore rexers on this forum though :/

Anything else, post it up :)

Bonnet pins surfice, I think.
I thought CAMS had done away with that requirement, as long as the car is registered, and the catch is an unmodified OEM catch.

But bonnet pins certainly meet the requirement otherwise. But just be careful the police don't "canary" you for the pins protruding above the bonnet line.

Didn't know bonnet pins were illegal, they do stick up a little but what counts as the "bonnet line"?

Anyway, looks like I just missed the Winton fun day, that would have been great .

I'm looking at doing the advanced driving course with Driver Dynamics in January so at least I will have an idea of what my car can do.

I'll keep an eye on the events calendar to see whats going on next year.

With getting a CAMS license do I *think* a level 2 speed (L2S) for events like SAU Deca.

Do I apply directly to CAMS for a license or through SAU Vic?

Oh, any recommendations on where to start looking a helmet?

Yes L2S is the licence to allow you to compete in club motorsport events including DECA. About $80 from memory.

You can download the form from their website and fill it in yourself before sending it off. You will need to put your membership details on it when you apply for the licence.

If you come to Deca you can get a cams licence on the day, that's probably easier than worrying about it now, also that will allow you to get the licence when you need it, not months before.

Deca is definately the way to go but be quick these events sell out pretty quickly.

Dates TBC soon!

Ok, great, I'll buy the CAMS license on the day. Just need to find a helmet and a fire extinguisher.

I am guessing the fire extinguisher need to be mounted inside the car and secured with bolts?

Will need to work out how its done :(

Make sure you buy a fire extinguisher with a metal holder. Drill one hole through the holder, big enough to fit the bolt supporting the rear seat, thus mounting the extinguisher under the rear seat.

Sorry to drag up this old thread, but DECA has a fire extinguisher requirement so I managed to get one with a metal bracket ($10 in Lalor :P).

When mounting near the rear seat, can you mount the extinguisher with 1 bolt? (A 1KG extinguisher).

Or does it require two bolts (ie. drill into the car for the second bolt)?

I've searched but everything says fire extinguisher complying to CAMS standards, I couldn't find that information, I do know it needs to comply to a certain Aus standard but unsure about mounting standards...

Regards,

Gareth

two decent bolts should be sufficient. i have 4 in each extinguisher. i would not be a fan of just 1 bolt. and just to be sure, you are using nuts and bolts, not screws? lots of people screw them in and get knocked back.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
