Ok, bear with me. The important thing to remember here is: R31's ARE OLD CARS. My conversation with the local R31 expert here in Kobe was 30 minutes of explaining WHY I needed such indepth info, then 10-15 minutes of fact finding.

Well, the obvious electric front seat in the GTS-X you all know.

Here's the stuff you might not know about the '86 R31...

*The GTS came with an AM/FM radio ONLY.

*The GTS-X came with an AM/FM radio AND Casette.

*The GTS-X had a CD Player as an option. CD player = GTS-X.

*The GTS-X had a Sunroof option. Sunroof = GTS-X.

*The GTS-X had Cruise Control as an option. Cruise Control = GTS-X.

Here`s the big one:

***The GTS-X has a Spit-Fold Rear Seat as standard! The GTS doesn`t!!! The GTS has just a plain bench seat with no options.

*The GTS-X came standard with 15inch alloy wheels.

*The GTS weighs 1320kg 5MT, and 1340kg AT.

*The GTS-X weighs 1350kg 5MT, and 1370kg AT.

Now, the only sure-bet that you`ve got a GTS-X is probably the split-fold rear seat (unless you want to weigh your car).

As I said at the beginning, (and what dear Kaneko-san repeated 3 times) is that these cars are old, theres a very good chance that someone along the line has swapped parts to make a GTS a GTS-X to sell for a higher price, or the only replacement parts available were of the different model but close enough etc, etc...

So from me, good luck R31 crew, I hope you can identify GTS/GTS-X from 500m now!!!:D

Oh, and one more thing...

It makes no difference if your GTS/GTS-X does, or doesn`t have a front/rear spoiler. Those front/rear spoilers were an option on BOTH cars, and as I said before, it`s also likely that the spoilers weren`t factory fitted, but done later by the owner(s).

Kaneko-san mentioned that he remembered when these cars were on the new car market (!) that the dealers often threw the spoilers on as a "free-bee"...

Well, those cassette players can be damn heavy LOL :)

But seriously, all the other things being optional, it seems the extra weight is in the electric seat.....

It seems the weight for the GTS-X is for a fully optioned one. Factor in the sunroof, bigger wheels, etc, and that weight of 1350kg for the 5MT would be the MOST that the GTS-X would weigh.

The fact that the GTS has bugger all options means that any GTS is likely to weigh bang on 1320...

Hey Rezz..

can you help out with my GTS-R ?

is there like a build number or something on them ?

a code...

I've got the build plate that says RB20DET-R... and that proves its a GTS-R, but there is no build number of sorts.

ALSO i heard they had Nismo GTS-R's... a limited run of around 80 of them? out of the 800 made...

any help is much appreciated.

I don't know about a "Nismo" GTS-R limited build, but there was an Autech version released in '88 in small numbers. I've only seen 1 on the road in 3 1/2 years in Japan.

There was a Nismo GTS released about the same time ('86-'87), but there are quite a few GTS's "posing" as Nismo's, to the point where people get pissed with you if you ask 'em if it's genuine...

The build plate I don't know. I'll check it out, but if your looking for a HSV style "Build 23 of 800" plate... mmm, maybe not. Anybody else got a genuine GTS-R?

There are a few here with one.

not many but enough.

A few here in the state of Victoria now.

mmm... I had a nismoid GTS at one stage. If you've heard of those?

mmm... Maby not like HSV... but an identifier number of some description would be the shit!

Cause i've got an IMPUL dash in my one!

Something I've noticed with the GTS is that they have a vinyl boot and non folding mirrors whereas the GTS-X has a carpeted boot and folding mirrors.

Pete,

My old GT Passage had that velour thing happeneing on the pillar covers. It was more like a spray-on treatment rather than a fabric.

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
