Hey guys... im at work & really bored so thought id put something up to entertain a few out there..?

About 5 months ago i put up a thread asking for advice on what would be the best drift hack to buy for under 3gz & we looked into corollas, old 280zx's, datsuns, R31's etc. Well i ended up getting a manual VN wagon which is probably one of the best things ive ever done besides throwing snowballs at people below skiing while up on the lifts at Mt Bulla.. :)

There is absolutely nothing i havnt been able to use this car for. You can make babies in it, go camping, drift it (better than a lot of other cars surprisingly) & fit as many tires in the back as u want!!!

I have actually spent some money on it which has made the car now handle very very well & also goes realllyy good too. It has more punch than Auto & Manual BA 6 falcons & any stock or lightly worked auto V8's.

Its currently got the following:

Handling

-Custom 600 pound front & 400 pound rear springs (made by Browns Springs)

-Pedders shortened shocks

-Whiteline front strut brace

-Whiteline rear sway bar

-Nolathane bushes in front

-Heavy duty front sway bar links

-17x8 BBS meshwheels with dish :)

-Daytona bucket seat

Power

-Cold air intake

-Lukey cat back exhaust

-4.11 diff gears with mini spool ;)

-Excedy clutch

Believe it or not with the above mods this car has been as much fun as my 220rwkw R33 which now has a blown motor. I took this VN to the calder wednesday night drift meet & temp didnt go above qtr for 7 straight laps!! I never though id brag about an ausie car cos im a strictly NISSAN man only but this car has really exceeded my expectations from when i bought it lol.

Anyway i might get back to work now and do something useful... I'll put some pics up when i get home tonight...

Yeh i've seen a few ppl doing VN's up for drift, was a guy who wanted 4k for a matt black one with worked engine, heaps of suspension mods and racing seats on bc a while ago, was a VN ss at drift fest as well doing pretty well.. no body roll though so i'd say a bit of suspension work.. i was gonna use my VN for a hack/ mess about drift car, till it got stolen and i ended up with a corolla ;<

I want picks dammmmit!!! hahaha

yeah those VN's are as tough as R31's!

They can cop a hiding and just keep going!

Some cheap and well thought out mods you have there also! If I had to replace my 31 - Id consider this option also!

now photos please :) :burnout:

haha very true mate! I tell ya what though, from when i first bought the car its come a loonngg way. I really didnt expect to spend money on it, but when i saw the potential of these things i just fell in love and began doing stupid things to it. ;)

It is a very underated car. I couldve spent 8 or more grand on a AE86 or something which wouldve had f*** all balls which could be used for nothing but getting thrown around on the track.

Instead i spent $1100 on this wagon and spent about 3gz on it to make it a car thats quicker than most auto V8's & non turbo BA's, VERY reliable, VERY driftable (thanks to whiteline :) , & u can honestly use the car for absolutely anything. I even put my go-kart in it when i take it to the track.

At the moment it owes me just over 4 grand. I'll definitely put up some pics tonight!!

Very soon bonnet will be black with a White letter box grill & sticker will be put back on the black bonnet once re painted... :D

Should i go for mat black or gloss??? im leaning towards gloss.....

lol thanks guys... no dori pics as yet. :(

Next calder night ill get in early and hopefully get some nice daylight shots... Are there any photographers on the wednesday nights taking shots like they do for the Friday night drags??

lol, a black bonnet on a car with a bright red bucket seat & mini spool isnt a try hard look. Its a) funny, b) tuff, c) indicates the car is never straight.

It will cost me f**k all... $150 at most.

Main reason y im doing it, is even though its a holden i dont want the car i drive to look like an aussie car... lol. I know it sounds stupid but im not the type to be seen driving an aussie car, its never been anything but a skyline thats y i feel kinda weird. lol, Hence the wacky mods.

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
