Firstly Hi to everyone, I've just started posting on this site so go easy.

Thought I give you guys a run down on the beast and see what you think.

Over the last year or so I've been slowly working my L28E out of my 280zx.

We started with a stocky that had logged a few km's up and was lucky to be pumping out 60-70 rwkW.

The first mods were installed in a relatively short time and as expected I slapped on a Finner-Filter and built a 2 1/2" exhaust system for it. Bang we went up by about 8kW and the torque curve started to level out.

But not nearly having as much power as I wanted we ripped the top off the bastard and fitted a reground cam from EFI hardware. This was sick! Grabbed an extra 500rpm (6500) and found another 20kW.

Wasn’t long before this became boring also so off came the top again and the ports were opened up the valves, valve guides & valve springs were replaced and base shaved straight. Not bad a bit more power but far more torque and smoothness in the operation.

But alas it wasn’t long before the bottom end dropped and it was time for some work down there. So a new set of pistons, rings and a mandrel hone was thrown together with some new bottom end bearings and a deck shave. Whooo hoo! Up we came to around 110 rwkW. And that’s with completely stock intake, injectors and computer.

So I changed them! First we had to make and fit some aluminum injector spacers cause the bakerlite ones just fall apart. Then we fitted some re-worked injectors designed for about 15% more flow. A modified fuel pressure regulator was then fitted and finally a Hawk engine management was installed and the dizzy was welded up to remove acceleration advance. Zippa de do da we had 142 rwkW.

I like! But still not quite enough.

So I quickly borrowed a mates nitrous kit and gave that a squirt. With a bit of doggy installation we managed to use ¾ of a spare bottle setting it up and 1 bottle playing with it.

The final figures 206 rwkW!!!!!!

So whats left. Well I’m still running the stock inlet and exhaust manifolds due to some VIC roads problems and the nitro has since left.

So the work bench at home currently has a new manifold being built on it with a 1.5Litre plenum for some serious power and some new extractors are being built. Couple this with replacing the stock pissy throttle body and I should hopefully see that 200 kW figure without the nitro.

Then its time for the nitro to return.

So how many people out there think I’m nuts and how many think I’ve missed something?

HELP!

Hell no!

Yeah, I added a bit of ducting to the fronts brakes, but the 280's 4wdiscs are pretty sweet. I've had some king springs made up and re-worked some shockers but the springs chewed them up pretty quickly, need some decents now. Worst part of handling is still got stock 14's on her. Lauches good but corning shit unless your drifting.

Spending most of my time on my others cars lately just tinkering with this one in my spare time.

  • 8 months later...

i don't know how you are getting that much power out of it??? ive had the bottom end rebuilt, balanced etc, head was tidyed up, flat top pistons (high comp), AFM modded by datrally, exhaust manifold modded and 2 1/2" mandrel bent zorst. to dat i can only churn up ~84rwkw. and ive been told with headwork, cam, injectors, ported manifold,65m throttlebody, extractors and a decent engine management that i can only get 250hp out of the thing.

  • 3 weeks later...

what you need to try to do is get in touch with some of the JP Zboys running the l28, the thing is that next to PHAT, your the only other person to talk of the l28 engine but i might be able to ask someone else for you who to my knowledge were to built a l28e race engine this was over a year ago though!!

i gather you want to stay N/A?

I don't know about the N/A form, but the L20e with a Bore/stroke to 28 is pretty impressive when turboed...

let us know how you get on - im gonna need to tune up a 260z when i get the body back up to spec..

ive been told with headwork, cam, injectors, ported manifold,65m throttlebody, extractors and a decent engine management that i can only get 250hp out of the thing.

i had a l20 (the four not the six) that i put the biggest dragrace cam that crow make, Seton (glenn's dad) Motorsport headers ,2.5 inch zorst, twin 40mm webers on a datrally manifold.....bored 60thou and cleaned up the ports(not ported out, just cleaned)

standard dish type pistons, and it pushed my datto 1600 to a low 14.......

it had bugger all comp as i was going to supercharge it....so if u have high comp, injection, ported and pipes...it should go hard i dunno why it isnt....is ur cam timed properly?

    • Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏
    • Hi, Marek here 🙋‍♂️. I finally fulfilled my longtime dream - recently bought Stagea and now waiting for it to arrive in Poland. There's only few of these in my country, and one of the owners  recommended mi this forum as a source of all the info i'd need since now i own one  so here i am.
    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
