NickR33
Traditionally we focus on push and pull exercises at the gym, often neglecting the "sides". The result is a two dimensional strength base that leaves you with a good looking body and a strong push/pull, but a shitty balance side to side. Do some sideways core exercises and you'll wind up with a three dimension core...it's amazing the difference that this kind of strength will make in a sport or fight. Core on the whole seems to be fairly overlooked in the family gymnasiums. For tall guys, this is going to be their biggest weakness due to a higher centre of gravity and the whole principle of length = torque. Wish I'd focused on it years ago! pretty much any exercises you do standing is training your core... I see guys doing shoulder press or similar sitting on a bench, stand up and it becomes a whole body exercise... any time you do a movement where your unbalanced its a working your core... bench press done with dumbells on a swiss ball for instance... try doing them with only one dumbell, one arm at a time doing pushups, put your feet on a swiss ball... then try using just one foot doing pullups, when you get to the top do a straight leg raise before you lower yourself back down kettlebells are good too... you can use them for woodchop swings, squat swings, upright rows, cleans etc if you approach training like this you will hardly ever need to do crunches and direct ab work Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/200767-gym-and-supplement-discussion/page/77/#findComment-5835770 Share on other sites

Dani Boi
Do many people here take glutamine as a seperate supplement? I've run out of it and I'm really contemplating not buying it this time around after a lot of reading on the net. Also what are your opinions on push up's? Are they reasonably effective because I do about 100 in my routine, it's probably one of my favourite exercises tbh. Birds
Push ups are good. Like all body resistance, it's something that can be done until failure without worrying too much about consequence. More important than how many you do is the timing and form IMO. Are you doing 100 in sets of 20? How far spaced are the sets? Wide or close hand stance? A popular method is to do the pushups between sets of a chest exercise, or at the end of one. If you want to be good at doing pushups, then yes they are effective. Every exercise known to man can be effective, you just need to tell us what for though. R31Nismoid
If im doing pushup sets i mix it up 3 ways. close/shoulder/wide space, so 3 sets x 3 - you hurt in every area, and get a good tri workout too! You can even mix it up and do it with feet on a bench etc. And not these half hearted efforts - down to the nose, and ensuring shoulder blades almost meet. Just that little extra movement i found made quite a difference. I've just started back in the gym, 2 sessions thus far in 4 days. Hurting pretty bad but it'll pass no doubt. Going to start up with a mate who's just moved to Footscray, nothing like a mate for motivation and to push each other. So once i settle in I'll start a little log of progress and what not. Infact thoughts on a "sub forum" for people to have thier own work logs? Could work, I've just started hitting the weight training hard again and am keeping a training diary this time around (about 4 weeks in at the moment) It would be interesting to see peoples routines verse gains etc... Do it. Might motivate mofos on SAU to become a bit more active and stay active. (SAU has a responsibility towards the well being of its computer programmer slash office job type lardos.) Just kidding, it would be a good idea though, NS.com stylez, without the powerlifting is g0dlikez!!!! and sif train to look good nonsense. Birds
lol mass (pun!) generalisation here, but the people who say "sif train to look good" are usually fat f**kers who can't be bothered doing the cardio/dieting to trim their body into good shape, so they stick to powerlifting and say "it's all about the strength, pretty boy". Also willing to bet they check themselves out in the mirror, just like everybody else. I agree however there is a difference between training for strength, speed, power or bodybuilding... kinda like motorsport... you build a very different car for circuit, drag, dyno or drift... not to say that there can't be crossover, there is but you need to be clear as to your priorities I also lol at people who reckon BBers aren't strong and its all for looks... ummm go tell Ronnie Coleman that I can't bring myself to check myself out in the mirror when at the gym... but at home I'm all flexing and shit... then my wife catches me and I pretend I'm checking my teeth or something... Birds
Yeah definitely, different workouts for different goals. People paying out on other peoples goals / workouts shit me up the wall, so I give it straight back Personally I like a bit of both, i.e. the crossover, with a focus on appearance. As for looking in the mirror...gotta have something to do between sets lol...I've mastered all 1200 levels of unblock me on my iPhone Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/200767-gym-and-supplement-discussion/page/77/#findComment-5844390 Share on other sites

Nee-san
Feeling alot stronger in my lifts now. Not being a f**khead with my diet is helping a great deal also. Clocked into gym at 3:09 AM this morning Lol. Next step, get some protein powder. Not having a license seriously smokes the pole, can't get to woolies enough for delicious food supplies. Instead of a war on poverty they gotta war on drugs so the police can bother me.
