hey team

who has experience with night club photography?

i'm looking for a new lens for shots of groups of people

a camera store recommended a 30mm fixed. f1.4

would this be wide enough?

it sounds ok because of the f1.4 so i wouldnt have to use my speed light too much.

would like to take shots like this

currently am using

nikon d100

tamron 28-300mm

nikon sb-800 speedlight (external flash for cherie)

That shot was definitely taken with a speedlight, with a dome/diffuser on it so that it didn't create harsh shadows. Rear/slow sync was also used as you can see it has exposed the shot for maybe 1/4 second (it has softened/blurred a little in the background) and then "snapped" the subjects in the foreground.

Shooting without a speed light wouldn't look as "pleasing" - in all senses of the word. :(

thanks mate.

do you think i should go for the 30mm fixed lens? or try out the 28-300 with a speed light?

will use the diffuser on the speed light also. pointed at 45 degrees. i like the slow sync for the background effect

its been shot with a very slow shutter speed, which is why the background is clear. A wide lens is best as most times your shooting groups of people

I would be going for something like a 12-24mm or 10-20mm lens

i dont think the skanks going to these clubs want to see pictures of themselves with their heads all stretched out of proportion

the wide end of those two wouldn't get used very often......

20-25 gives good area exp...f1.4 is needed for darker settings...any strong flash with diffuser would be good...

try at home and then try..say...around a servo etc..then fiddle with your settings and go for it!!!

    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
