Im wondering what you guys and girls think of this car as our investment.

Its a 2004 mercedes CLK 320 in Wine red.

33000 kms on the clock, full leather, Shaken until next year in June ( well inside the 1 year rule ) full service history, looks well maintained and is available for between 2.6 million and 2.9 million Yen which works out to around 27 to 29 thousand Oz.

I think thats very cheap for a car of this condition and with that low amount of kilometres.

The other thing too is that it will be worth much more than what i paid for it here, in Oz. Hence the benz or the bm.

I use the train to work every day anyway so id only have time to use the car on weekends and during holidays.

If i really need a speed fix ill buy a dunger drifter and thrash the rings out of it.

a) unobtainable easily in australia

b) gonna command a higher price here than in japan (that's kinda easy, most of them do)

c) worth the hassle of importing

d) desirable enough to the australian public that they'll overlook the taboo of buying a grey/personal import.

anyone in the market for a merc or a beemer locally will just walk into a dealership and buy either of those.

ive seen one listed for 30k at a car yard in CarSensor magazine but the car didnt have any shaken ( vehicle inspection ) on it.

That made me think...why so cheap?

a) unobtainable easily in australia

b) gonna command a higher price here than in japan (that's kinda easy, most of them do)

c) worth the hassle of importing

d) desirable enough to the australian public that they'll overlook the taboo of buying a grey/personal import.

Ok...cool. Shan, so if i go by that logic, what kind of cars do you think would be along the lines you just mentioned? Because by my reasoning, why wouldnt someone want to save over 10 thousand on a car that is in better condition with much lower kays?

You'll find a private import luxury like merc, bmw or porsche are given a wide berth by alot of local car yard and there arent alot of support around to sell,insure orfinance them..

Its not going to a car yard. It will be a private sale. I dont understand why someone wont insure them if it has been complianced in Australia? As for financing, again..im confused... would you care to elaborate?

You'll find that besides the fact that you there are BMW and merc dealerships in Australia, if you import one personally (even though its complied in Aus) insurance companies raise the insurance premium cause its now classified as an import, kinda like the r32 skylines, the local delivered skylines are cheaper to insure, even though are the exactly the same as the imported version but thats the way it is.

As for finance, most financial institutions wont offer a personal secured loan on a car that isnt physically here, even though you can prove that its on the way. The only way around this is an unsecured loan which you will pay a little extra in interest, or if you have a house draw againt the loan for that OR if you have the money sitting there doing nothing then you obviously dont have to worry about finance.

You find that if you have patience and dont mind doing the extra work, importing a car like this can literally save you thousands, but it isnt just a matter of paying the money and getting it here, there will be hick-ups alond the way. My old man just imported a Bayliner (a boat) from the USA, the amount of bullshit if he gone through to get it here (warfies are wankers) its been quite a headache, but in the end hes saved close to $50,000 so its worth it.

    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
    • When I said "wiring diagram", I meant the car's wiring diagram. You need to understand how and when 12V appears on certain wires/terminals, when 0V is allowed to appear on certain wires/terminals (which is the difference between supply side switching, and earth side switching), for the way that the car is supposed to work without the immobiliser. Then you start looking for those voltages in the appropriate places at the appropriate times (ie, relay terminals, ECU terminals, fuel pump terminals, at different ignition switch positions, and at times such as "immediately after switching to ON" and "say, 5-10s after switching to ON". You will find that you are not getting what you need when and where you need it, and because you understand what you need and when, from working through the wiring diagram, you can then likely work out why you're not getting it. And that will lead you to the mess that has been made of the associated wires around the immobiliser. But seriously, there is no way that we will be able to find or lead you to the fault from here. You will have to do it at the car, because it will be something f**ked up, and there are a near infinite number of ways for it to be f**ked up. The wiring diagram will give you wire colours and pin numbers and so you can do continuity testing and voltage/time probing and start to work out what is right and what is wrong. I can only close my eyes and imagine a rat's nest of wiring under the dash. You can actually see and touch it.

So I thought if I used my table of known values I could estimate it by putting a value into the pullup resistor, and this should line up with the voltages I had measured. Input 1 = 2.98V Output 1 = 50C Input 2 = 0.407V Output 2 = 150C (0.407-2.98) / (150-50) -2.573/100 = -0.02573 2.98/-0.02573 + 47.045 = 50 So the corresponding formula should be: (Input / -0.02573) + 47.045 = Output.   If someone can confirm my math it'd be great. Supposedly you can pick any two pairs of the data to make this formula.
