I suggest if you are concerned about the fact that someone is faster than you, stop complaining about it and get out on the track and practise more.

How many of the cars entered in the Tsukuba event in Japan (on which this event was suppose to be based on), were driven by there owners? Near none of them, because the cars are owned by tuning houses who hire drivers to get the best out of them to help sell there wares.

THIS WAS A DRIVING EVENT WAS IT NOT???

Yeh, good points. When talking to people and reading posts i am not sure what i think of the situation. I can completely understand a passionate enthusiast who has spent plenty of time and money on his car and really wants to see what the car can do. Enter a good steerer and fella like John Boston. I can also see how other competitors in the street class are frustrated by having to forfeit that last little bit of pace to a better driver/car package. Mainly because of the driver part of things. SO?????

I think at the end of the day i personally welcome a borrowed steerer. I dont care enough about winning to care, and i love the challenge of going up against better drivers and improving to the point that one day i can get close. I never matched the times Peter Hackett did in my car, despite about 18 months of trying, though i ended up going close :D

But i think the big reason why their should be a class for owners and their cars (be it street or some other class) is that there are those that for whatever reason have to step aside every now and then for a year or two. So in which case you need some other cars and competitors coming along developing cars. It is with this consideration that i feel a class should cater for the guy in his own equipment closer to the starting point of car development and who has enough of a sniff to keep developing the car and their skills. In a year or three they may step to the Open Class and you may have another competitive car. If they guy isnt getting the fun of piloting his own car in a more suitable Jr class then perhaps the development of newer cars may be hindered???

Anyway, you can never leep everyone happy. For me now that the event is done i am dirty i missed it. I cant believe ever since Saturday night i have been thinking about cancelling my OS job/holiday and getting my wagon back on track and see how i go next year. The fact that i am even entertaining the idea is proof that this event holds a plenty of appeal, even to people who have done years of club sprint stuff.

why dont we just turn up and Bozz can drive all the cars

I think you are onto something there champs... thats a good idea!

But in my opinion, if you arnt up to it... dont turn up EASY.

If you have aspirations to emulate his driving ability, get out on the track more. Again EASY.

id rather be a good sportsman than make a contest unfair thats all. Our car would have matched his in that class...no problem at all...our car more than complied to race clubman...but...no point stealing candy from a baby though. Some people feel big time winning a lopsided contest...not me. The S2000 cars lack of a working cat. upset a few people who actually made the effort to get their car to properly comply with class rules. A few competitors in the clubman class may not be interested in returning if thats the way its played.

no need to be cheeky "champs"

looks like the first event was a killer. congrats to all involved. love the pics I hae been seeing. Will come down to the next one for sure. (Hopefully a series at more than Oran Park is born???)

I would prefer rules similar to the QLD Timeattack series:

A: Street Class:

The Vehicle must be constructed by a major manufacture.

Must have a rear exiting exhaust system with a muffler.

Must be road registered.

Must have OEM glass.

Must have OEM doors.

Must have both front seats (can have a race seat and a standard seat) and basic interior in the front half of the cabin. (Removal of carpet, stereo etc and liner allowed but not the dash)

Must not have in cabin adjustable brake bias / pedal box.

Must have DOT approved street legal tyres. Tyres must not have “For race use only” or “Not for highway use” marked on them. The tyres cannot be grooved slicks etc (See tyre register thread for further details)

B: Open Class:

All cars that do not fit into the Street Class and comply with the general rules

I dont like the tire classification with Superlap as it stands...

I still have no idea how there can be an opinion that the playing field is different because someone has more (even be it a variant) of motorsport experience or driving ability. There is no plausible argument to it whatsoever.

Driving ability + Car V’s Driving ability + Car. = Superlap

Bozz doesn’t need anyone to blow the wind up his arse and say how good of a driver he is. And truth be known, other than a stint with the BSM Skyline for a few rounds in last years IPRA with Lofty, an endurance drive down at Wakefield and a Mazda endurance drive in Japan last year in which none of them he was paid for! Bozz hasn’t raced anywhere near as much as a number of people I saw out there on Saturday and i travel to a lot of motorsport events all over Australia.

I am happy to debate anyone on the subject because again “Champs” there is no plausible argument to the subject.

And for the record... i havnt tried to be cheeky, just saying it how it is.

not sure what you mean about that line lotusdave, the weight of your car must make a huge difference. for any heavy touring car like gtr/evo/commodore etc, middleton has the car in exactly the right spot (no i don't mean up aaron's arse lol)

Peddler, i am liking what i read. BUT, i keep coming back to what size fields does Superlap want to see? I suspect unless you cater for private individuals driving their own street cars in a street class, you will lose out overall as entries will drop. Now does this matter? I dont know? Will the event survive with only 36 cars in Open Class, or do you want to encourage the 29 guys running around in the street class?

I dont know. It is motorsport, so there is the requirement for driver to be up to the job. But even in motorsport there are Jr classes and feeder classes, but thats why CAMS clubs run sprint rounds and driver training places have work Mon to Fri.

LOL, just do a Lewis Hamilton and be so one eyed blind in your own ability so that you will take on all comers...im going to go with that and just rely on my wit and BS to talk up my own ability and causes for lack lustre lap times :D

Also, why is poor Bozz being singled out? I suppose he was the only hired hun in Clubman?

Exactly the right spot to destroy the alignment, Duncan! i drove mine for the first time on sunday after taking that line around 30 times a couple of weeks back. Something is bent....

I noticed both lotii stayed off the ripple strip through there too. Everyone else in open was mad for hopping over it. Lots of sparks.

Come on Marty, 99% of us weekend hacks will never be as good as boz no matter how much practice we get :D

That's the spirit!!! :D

Will it be on the cards to fix Johns shell?? It didnt look like a write off :(

its about weighing up whats feasable cost wise. Sometimes its just cheaper to buy a rolling shell and start again. Will be a while i guess before the decision is made but regardless, they will be back bigger and badder than before

Dirt

Why do people always look for excuses :D

Obviosly the people that it offended had no idea what a cat looks like. Maybe they were just dazed by being passed by a little Honda. Seriously, if they bothered to stick there head under the car (That is where cats are usually placed) they would have seen a pair of brand new (and working) cats.

Thought that I might remind you that I was faster on road tyres than your car was on race tyres. I would love you to put some road tyres on and come and join us. Bring on the next one

BTW I thought I would just remind people that Honda power was 1st in both classes :(

Personally I think making it a 2 day event is silly. All it will do is double the cost of running the event.

Agreed - personally i enjoyed the fact that the day progressed at a fast pace and there werent any major breaks in the excitement. Although I can definitely understand the drivers frustration in not getting enough track time (especially the club sprint guys). Maybe as someone suggested, scrutineering the night before or earlier in the morning to ensure a strict start time which could have given everyone a bit more track time. Maybe even holding the event in the later months so you get a bit more sunlight and therefore time in the day?

On the lines thing.

Duncan is spot on. That is the line over the dogleg. Have you guys never watched a V8 race, improved production race.

Check out the pic's of Lofty, Berry, Waldo and myself from the weekend. We are nearly on the grass.

The reason Dave, the little Lotus don't use ripples is because of there weight. Any open wheeler or light weight cars will not use ripples around oran, trust me :D they just get thrown around way too much.

Its simple really the entry form read "NO PRO DRIVERS" you run an advanced driver training school...and are a test driver...you get paid to do it. You are a PRO driver...simple...are you stupid or illiterate?

A lot of your peers and other entrants feel the same way as me...just dont have the balls to say what they think. What would you rather...someone who speaks their mind to you or someone that is friendly to you and hacks on you behind your back.

Your probabaly a nice likeable fella, ive never met you, its just we dont agree on this issue...fine.

Our driver is not a paid professional (drives for his dads BMW team) but we thought in the spirit of the event and good sportsmanship it would be best to enter open class. Unfortunately not everyone is as sporting as we are.

I am no pro driver....ummmmmmmmm not stupid or illiterate.

And I will correct you. I do not run an Advanced Driving School.

No Professional drivers will be allowed to enter Clubsprint Class. The promoter will be the sole arbiter as to which drivers are classified as “professional”. As a guide, anyone who has been paid a wage or salary to drive in a competitive form of motorsport will not be allowed to drive in Clubsprint Class. Competitors are encouraged to contact the Promoter to confirm the eligibility of drivers prior to entering.

Have I been paid a wage or salary hahahahahahahahaha I WISH

Just facts, not rude :(

Can we find someone else to pick on :D

Sorry my mistake....you work for an Advanced driving school. Wheels etc dont pay you also...ok no probs then.

No one else to pick on...Brett Middleton isnt here...lol

Hi, I'm new here but let me stir up some shit by saying, I don't know what the fuss is all about with "pro drivers" and what not class etc etc

From my point of view, none of the driver's really shone in this event. The cars were all doing the times expected and no one really stood out. On average, it was average driving with maybe the exception of the Lead Lotus, that wasn't expected and probably the only car that looked like it had pace... :D

So really, I don't think any of these are worth arguing about, the event has come and gone. :(

Its simple really the entry form read "NO PRO DRIVERS" you run an advanced driver training school...and are a test driver...you get paid to do it. You are a PRO driver...simple...

"NO PRO DRIVERS" was a little ambiguous from the organisers, taxi drivers, couriers, ambulance drivers, etc are all professional drivers.

I'm sure some entrants would be considering using "hired help" for the next superlap event. I may do it, only because I can't steer. :D

    • I have no hard data to report, but I have to say, having driven it to work and back all week, mostly on wet roads (and therefore mostly not able to contemplate anything too outrageous anywhere)..... it is real good. I turned the boost controller on, with duty cycle set to 10% (which may not be enough to actually increase the boost), and the start boost set to 15 psi. That should keep the gate unpressurised until at least 15 psi. And rolling at 80 in 5th, which is <2k rpm, going to WOT sees the MAP go +ve even before it crosses 2k and it has >5 psi by the time it hits 90 km/h. That's still <<2.5k rpm, so I think it's actually doing really well. Because of all the not-quite-ideal things that have been in place since the turbo first went on, it felt laggy. It's actually not. The response appears to be as good as you could hope for with a highflow.
    • Or just put in a 1JZ, and sell me the NEO head 😎
    • Oh, it's been done. You just run a wire out there and back. But they have been known to do coolant temp sensors, MAP sensors, etc. They're not silly (at Regency Park) and know what's what with all the different cars.
    • Please ignore I found the right way of installing it thanks
    • There are advantages, and disadvantages to remapping the factory.   The factory runs billions of different maps, to account for sooooo many variables, especially when you bring in things like constantly variable cams etc. By remapping all those maps appropriately, you can get the car to drive so damn nicely, and very much so like it does from the factory. This means it can utilise a LOT of weird things in the maps, to alter how it drives in situations like cruise on a freeway, and how that will get your fuel economy right down.   I haven't seen an aftermarket ECU that truly has THAT MANY adjustable parameters. EG, the VAG ECUs are somewhere around 2,000 different tables for it to work out what to do at any one point in time. So for a vehicle being daily driven etc, I see this as a great advantage, but it does mean spending a bit more time, and with a tuner who really knows that ECU.   On the flip side, an aftermarket ECU, in something like a weekender, or a proper race car, torque based tuning IMO doesn't make that much sense. In those scenarios you're not out there hunting down stuff like "the best way to minimise fuel usage at minor power so that we can go from 8L/100km to 7.3L/100km. You're more worried about it being ready to make as much freaking power as possible when you step back on the loud pedal as you come out of turn 2, not waiting the extra 100ms for all the cams to adjust etc. So in this scenario, realistically you tune the motor to make power, based on the load. People will then play with things like throttle response, and drive by wire mapping to get it more "driveable".   Funnily enough, I was watching something Finnegans Garage, and he has a huge blown Hemi in a 9 second 1955 Chev that is road registered. To make it more driveable on the road recently, they started testing blocking up the intake with kids footballs, to effectively reduce air flow when they're on the road, and make the throttle less touchy and more driveable. Plus some other weird shit the yankee aftermarket ECUs do. Made me think of Kinks R34...
