I had a similar experience with this shop fitting a manual gearbox to my car

I had to finish the work of myself, due to inexperienced people working in the shop at the time

Then they expected full payment, even thuo I did over 50% of the work myself.

Had to then get car towed home due to it not being finished to things turning bad and getting abused.

Until now, it has been over 6 months, I have not said a bad word to anyone about my experience, esp against a site sponsor

But since the site sponsor has decided to air the problems of running their bussiness on a public forum, I see it fair for me to have a say.

yeah have to say, if i'm getting my car worked on and they say it's 'done' but is not as expected (e.g. bar not sitting correctly) and I haven't been warned before coming to pay/pickup i'd be pretty annoyed too.

it's like ordering a big mac and getting the pieces of meat raw and told you'll have to get that part cooked elsewhere. if you knew that before buying, you wouldn't bother.

also, any contractor knows that as a general rule, if you mis-quote an amount of work, you foot the difference. customers aren't going to come back or give any favourable feedback to someone who underquotes then underdelivers come time for payment.

seriously, even when customers are assholes, it's in a businesses best interest to do absolutely everything in their power to satisfy them. customers who are initially unsatisfied with a service/product are actually more likely to be a source of repeat business and word of mouth advertising than a customer who just get's what they asked for/expected.

think about if when this customer came to pick up their car, and AMEC says, "look i didn't realise the front bar would need trimming, and because of that, didn't factor it in, we'll get this place we deal with and trust to trim the bar for you at a discounted/no cost".

The customer, is like "well, f*ck that sucks, but i guess if you didn't know and you charged me only the hours you quoted - at least they're trustworthy"

and then they're more than likely a customer for life. sh*t, if i were you guys, i'd try to work something out. AMEC has a good name as far as i know, it doesn't take much to add doubt to the name in many potential customers minds, and it also doesn't take much to reinforce trust...

haha this is soooo funny, the usual dispute i guess. im with the shop here i guess. i put my own front mount on to save a bit of cash cos it really aint that hard, the only thing i have had done in a shop was my zhaust and if i had of went back to find that they had cut up my rear bumper to acommodate a huge cannon or sumthing i wud have been EXTREMELY pissed. i can see how the customer was pissed off tho cos from what i remember its illegal to drive a car with no bumber so legally he couldnt have driven the car away and could have demanded the front bar be fit, even with cutting. but yea a fone call would have fixed it.

Moral of my story is... as a customer you need to know what is going to happen to ur car wen u drop it off, look it up or ask questions. a simple search on here would have let fan33 know his bar would need cutting, thats what this websites for. dont just leave ur car off saying here i want this turbo on my car *hands over turbo sent from japan* and xpect wen u come back in a week it'll be like new, theres always something that happens. also talk to the guys at the shop, ive never left ne car at a shop without telling them to call me if there are any dramas, that included wen i dropped my old lancer in for a roadworthy, which was lucky cos the car needed $1000 worth of stuff done to pass, and i was called before work commenced, what would have happened if i was short of cash???

bear in mind this job was an Auto to Manual conversion on a Stagea. not exactly a straightforward job.

I told you I had no mechanic on staff to work on your car, and for some reason you assumed that I was a qualified mechanic. I myself am not a qualified mechanic, I am a car enthusiast who has bought a workshop and I am doing my mechanical apprenticeship. I have qualified mechanics who work for me. But back to your story.

Even though I explained that I had no mechanic at the time, you still insisted that the job go ahead anyway and you said at the start that you would work on the car also to get the job done. If the same thing happened now, with the experience I have had over the last year, I would have sent you packing before the job was even commenced.

I personally spent over 20 hours on that job, not including the time you worked on it, and I offered to charge 6 hours, but you kicked up a stink and ended up only paying me for 4 hours. So who got ripped off then? certainly not you. Hence a few choice expletives thrown in your general direction.

we fitted the bumper back on, it was secured at the front but not on the sides. so it was fine to drive. the bar just needs to be trimmed (but not by us) so that the side mounting points can be secured.

The workshop thats servicing my car on monday wont install my FMIC kit because they didn't purchase it.

They wont install ANY customer supplied parts. :(

I guess its to avoid situations like this.

we have no problem with installing customer supplied parts.

BUT YOUR FRONT BAR MAY NEED TO BE TRIMMED OK!?? :laugh::(:D

and the other thing is, no one posts about the good things that I do.

like randomly decide to do some jobs at no charge.

or give away or loan out some old parts I have lying around at no charge.

or donate or help out to charities, or sponsor the local school.

its always one or two assholes who drag up some petty dispute, usually over money (but over what else? wouldnt be here if money wasnt involved) that gets all the publicity.

Your job was to remove the auto gearbox and fit a manual box along with clutch and flywheel. The rest of the conversion was done myself prior to coming to your shop. you quoted me 6 hrs to do the job and to bring car in on the following Monday. When I arrived you said your new mechanic had not yet started and will not for another week. I said I am here now as no one had phone to cancel and not to come in. I said I wanted the work done which you accepted. I did argee to help if needed but you said you will be fine. At this stage you should have told me you are not a mechanic and you are not qualified to do the work but you did not. When I arrived later in week to see how you were progressing, half way thru removing the auto box you told me you are not a mechanic and was not really sure what you were doing. At that point I got my hands dirty to help get the job done as I needed the car back by the end of the week as promised. To cut the story short we finished the car together late one night. The real problem came when payment was required. I did see why I should have paided full price as quoted since you did not perform the work as quoted. I offered to pay 4hrs not 6hrs and you hit the roof. You thought you had did me a favour doing only half the work and expected to get paided the entire amount. I choose to pay the full amount on the night so I could get my car back and that I would see you in small claims court. You choose to refund $150 after a few days.

you never told me the job was an auto to manual conversion, you just said it was "install a gearbox" hence the quote of 6 hours. I challenge anyone here to post if they have been quoted 6 hours or less to do an auto to manual conversion.

In both cases, yours and mr FMIC, I have been the one who has been ripped off, not either of you.

mr FMIC only paid for the parts and NO labour.

you only paid for 4 hours labour and not 6 which should have been more like at least 10 hours for a quote on an auto to manual conversion.

you're an idiot.

people pay for services because they don't have the skills, time, energy, experience or inclination to do it themselves. you pay someone to do their job, you expect them to do it. most people don't have the time to research the same things that a professional is being paid to have already researched, trained in and hopefully already done a few times. i've done my own fmic, full exhaust, front bar and 100km service - because i had the time, inclination - to save money- and the naive expectation that it would be fun...!! :yes: . If i could afford to pay someone to do it though, i probably would have.

you say you're with the shop, but you point out that a simple phone call from the shop could've changed the course of this dispute. you say a customer needs to know what is going to be done to their car - yeah, that's what they expect to be told by the mechanic you douche...

i'm trying to be neutral with my comments - i've never had work done by amec, but their presence on this board with good feedback for the most part points to their generally good reputation.

but like i and others have pointed out, people expect good service, so they're not going to rave about it when they get it. customer expectations need to be exceeded for that to happen - and something bad happening in the first place is actually the best opportunity a business has to do that.

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
