Hi everyone,

It's pretty well established that the stock V35 TV/Nav can't be converted to run locally. The remaining solutions are to replace the factory TV with a single/double DIN unit or install a plug in unit which uses the factory display.

My question relates to the latter proposition. Suppose you had the perfect plug-in box, which could be hidden away in the glovebox, what would you want? My thoughts for features are as follows:

- FM/AM tuner

- CD/DVD/MP3/MP4/WMV/DivX/Xvid playback

- Analog/Digital (DVB-T) TV Tuner

- GPS

- Bluetooth for phone (with external mic for car installation)

- USB/SD reader

- CD/DVD changer control

- Audio out (4ch + sub) + optical

- Video out (NTSC/PAL)

- Audio/Video input (at least one)

- Reversing camera input/sensor

- Remote control (with external IR sensor which can be installed in car)

Any other ideas? Maybe an interface with factory keys?

Speak to Chris Rogers on this forum, I know he does at least most of all that above. You can keep your factory bose and have those features sitting on top and working - but you need to have your car transported to QLD to his place for a few days...

I'll let Chris confirm that with you.

Thanks Rianto,

I have seen what Chris does and know it covers most of those bases. However, as you point out, he is only in QLD so you need to send your car to him or send him to your car . That doesn't help when the Garmin & Blaupunkt units he uses are also so pricey.

His setup also requires multiple remotes and boxes to be installed.

I'm trying to find an alternative and work out what would be desirable for such a unit in a single, integrated setup.

Yes, it's expensive but not much other option if you don't wanna loose the stock audio ir trip computer.

But I did once read about car pc, have you considered one? might be able to cover most of the av entertainment side... can be installed out of sight too.

If it can be installed with a gps software then you could have navigation all in one remote.

Yes, I considered Car PC etc but decided against it. I am looking for a different, all-in-one solution as described. I'm hoping it can become something that all V35/M35 etc owners can easily use, not just for myself.

The point of this one is work similarly to Chris', but with a different unit running the extra features (i.e. still using the stock audio, trip comp etc.)

That all can be done, just depend how much you want to spend,

Chris already do a lot of reach and hard work, there is nothing much we can do unless we can sourse a cheap unit that cost only $500 can play DVD, GPS, CD WMA, DVB-T or even car status monitor like PIONEER unit does?

Otherwise there will be no much differents.

Cheers

This unit installed on M35 stageas has the following covered:

- Digital (DVB-T) TV Tuner

- Video out (NTSC/PAL)

- Audio/Video input x 2

- Reversing camera input/sensor

- Remote control (with external IR sensor which can be installed in car)

I wouldn't necissarilly agree that the unit can not be converted to work locally but it will take time and probably longer than you will be prepared to wait. The Xanavi guys in Russia are able to convert all the non GPS screens to English. Up to now it has only been done to Russian and installed by themselves. They are working on a Dealer Solution so that they their software can not be pirated. The unfortunate part of this is that this is not a quick solution and I have been told it will be September before it is ready. I will be waiting as I would like to keep these parts standard if possible. This along with the TV tuner from Chook looks to be a really great solution with most of the factory funtions able to be accessed.

They have not said the GPS is not possible but it is just not their focus yet.

If the English conversion is well revceived in Australia I am sure they will look into other upgrades such as the GPS provided people are prepared to invest in the solution.

Cheers

Andy

Chook,

Yes, that's not unlike the type of setup used on the V35. Unfortunately it still needs a separate DVD player, GPS, doesn't have integrated bluetooth etc. I'm really trying to develop the spec for a single, easy to use, (relatively) easy to install unit which covers most bases.

Andy,

I have been following the English text conversion thread with interest. What I'm referring to is a unit which retains the functionality of the stock trip/info computer, but becomes a single solution for the AUX in which has all of the desirable functionality of an ideal audio/visual system (i.e. DVD/DivX/MP3/Bluetooth etc) which the V35 doesn't have.

As I understand it, the GPS and TV simply cannot be converted, so an external solution is required for those aspects. I am merely trying to retain the display but add all the other features.

Maybe I haven't been clear enough in the purpose behind this thread?

Frank,

That's precisely the type of unit I am trying to develop the spec for. I want to make sure I've covered all the desirable bases before I see if I can get it.

Hi My friend, that is way toooo goooooood.

I will buy one if they are available.

Sooooo goood.

Hehe,

that's the point. Hence why I want to know what people would want from such a system!

I've already outlined what I want in my original post. I think it is all achievable except for the factory nav button interface (unless that could be done via an IR link or something - Chris?). I'm now after feedback, whether I've missed something or messed up in understanding etc.

Thanks mate:

What you listed is already good enough.

Only one thing that I want finger out is this:

PIONEER AVG-VDP1

http://www.pioneer.com.au/products/car_ent...ries/index.html

If we can intergrate this into the system, that is really cool.

hi Max,

this is a good thought in an ideal world... i was thinking of this for quite some time and did a lot of research into different setups that are available. the problem is there isn't many units that do the lot, and even fewer GOOD units. the good ones that do everything are expensive and your best real option is a carPC

really, most of that can be covered but the major conponents are GPS, TV, DVD, and bluetooth phone

i ended up going with the chris rogers conversion because i decided that i would prefer a good GPS and DVD system and would sacrafice the all-in-one design to have that working properly as a priorty. if you have used a cheap GPS system you will understand why the garmin unit is so good

some issues that i have with the all-in-one systems on the market:

- they use suspect GPS systems. most aren't big brands and don't tell you where their maps come from or if you can update maps. even fewer offer 3D images, and only the garmin offers spoken streetnames

- many TV tuners don't work in australia as we use a different system to japan/usa/etc so you have to source one designed specifically for australia

- getting a good TV image on the go requires a good tuner and a good antenna setup ie a diverstiy system with antenna on front and rear of car

- many DVD players still only do zone 4 discs and this would have to be overcome

- many cheap bluetooth systems are poor quality (look at some of hte good systems from parrot and nokia)

I applaud your thinking but there's a reason we have gone down the path we have

i wish you luck with your search and hope you find somethign good that suits your needs!

cheers,

Warren

andy, has the conversion been put back?

The news was not what I was after last week as they are estimating September now. I hope this can be brought forward but unfortunatley patience is required at the moment.

Cheers

I recognise that nothing exactly like this exists, hence my interest in seeing if something can be developed. Many overseas suppliers are willing to work with you if you are willing to pay for it (which I'm sure people would if it was a good product) or get some volume going.

I've done a fair bit of research so far into what can be obtained. The GPS software can often be chosen. I've seen Route 66 (Nokia) and TomTom software (which I prefer) being used.

The systems can also have DVB-T (our digital TV standard) tuner inbuilt and will output to both PAL & NTSC. Region free DVD doesn't seem to be a problem either.

The bluetooth is an unknown quantity but is likely to have improved over time.

The main issue I have come across so far is getting an external IR port on new models & have remotes that will control the mapping software instead of needing the touchscreen. If I can overcome these barriers, I should have access to something which will cover the remaining features as mentioned.

I would like to talk DIRECTLY to you . contact details in sig.

I have access to a few hundred chinese suppliers ALL offering me a ALL in one box for that car. ampping turns out to be an issue, price and relaibility.

as for the IR interface schematics - nup. I have them on paper and thats where I left them. I have played with a few 'cheap' all in one boxes and was not happy with the results. the pioneer AVIC HD3 gets my nod with the VDP unit attached. that is still $3k+ and does not cover TV.

most of the cars that these guys owne have been done AT COMPLIANCE level. they did not have to ship the cars to me. I do travel from time to time (have a sydney run (COGDOG35) and a melbourne run due up) when I have time to do so.

if you have the knowledge - reverse engineer the TV box and reverse engineer the radio. the latter I have the schematics for.

Can you get a universal remote and train them to work with all these different remotes?

Therefore having 2 or 3 different devices may not be such a hassle if you can just use one remote...

I know logitech makes these kind of remotes for home AV remote but not sure if they'll work in the car...

With GPS, has anyone tried the Garmin performance when going to concrete jungle like Sydney CBD?

I went to Sydney on the weekend and while I wasn't using Garmin since I didn't drive myself there, I was using my PDA with Destinator 6.

As soon as I got into the Sydney CBD, the poor damn thing spins madly and can't find out what direction I'm going,

got me lost in vicious George St-Sussex St one way circles... Took me half an hour just to escape the city to the north

or to the south. The GPS signals must have bounced madly back and forth on the buildings' glass facade, so not a fault of the software.

Either that or the built in NMEA receiver is just not as good as Sirf based receiver.

Outside the CBD area, the GPS is fine, as is in Melbourne as I only had very few problems in Melbourne CBD - but the buildings

here are not as tall and crowded compared to Sydney...

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
