just out of curiosity, if it was youngsters and we are able to restrain them withought causing harm until police arrive is this still a viable option? or is it hands off and just ?

Good question Mark.

You don't need to be a cop to detain anyone but there is a fine line between detaining and imprisonment or holding someone hostage.

Regardless of what people say, you have no powers of arrest but you can detain.

What happens if the guy that you are detaining tries very hard to get away, how do you hold him without assaulting him?

If you can detain someone without hurting them, go for it.

Having said that, if you were to grab a serious crook and sat on them till the cops came, 90% of the time (as long as they didn't require medical attention) the cops wouldn't bat an eyelid. Just make sure you don't grab the wrong guy.

My neighbour and I caught 4 young punks trying to steal my Kawasaki some years ago. I had it chained to a post "for sale" around the corner from my house. Caught them by surprise and our intent was to scare them off ... you know run and yell at them. Well all 4 put their fists up and none wanted to run. ... too bad.

If you catch anyone trying to steal or break into your car, and they don't back down, then its game on!

I don't care what people think. Maybe y'all think I'm just a tough talker, keyboard warrior, whatever. I'm me, and I hate disrespectful people. I've grown up very much most of my life under discipline and respect, and if someone disses you or your property, you can do something about it ... but think about it before you act.

hey.. i seriously think that if your all concerned about your cars being stolen(which you are ).... i reccomend buying a second hand baby moniter. if your car is reasonably close to your house...... you should get great reception. and they are f*kin loud and very sensitive to sound.. you'll hear them messing with your locks well before they get into your car... peace ..

As for restraining them. Done that too. There's a few wrist/arm locks that can be used with very little effort ... leaves no bruising or evidence of injury. I'll show you guys a few sometime, for those who'd like to know (and brave enough to get close enough). But its purely for restraint/self defence only.

As long as its clearly a "controlled restraint" and you're now intentionally inflicting injury upon them, then its cool. If the wrist/arm lock doesn't hurt them as long as they do not resist, and only hurts them if they struggle or try to get free, then your within the boundaries of the law. The same wrist/arm locks I'm referring to are taught to the police anyway ... I should know

So next time you get pulled over by a cop for something stupid that you did, think of what he has probably endured or witnessed in the last 24 hours.

if a cop can't handle the heat in the kitchen then maybe they should consider getting out! a police officer is an enforcer of the law and why should they be allowed to make judgements based on their mood? dispite what they've seen in the last 24 hours they can't let it influence their decissions on the job! the same goes in the courts, they can't let their morals influence the sentencing of the defendant! otherwise it'll just be vigilante with a badge and not proper police work! i just believe cops can't let their emotions get mixed up with the job

yeah you're right but cops are human too........I'll give you a scenario;

Say for arguements sake that you're a cop near the end of a grave yard shift and has just pulled a mother out of a wreck caused by a drunk driver then moments later you both watch her kid still in the wreck go up in flames, then an hour later you arrest some teenager doing 200 kph up Port Wakefield Rd..........are you telling me you wouldn't want to ring his neck.

If keeping absolute control of your emotions all the time 24/7 was a prerequisite for entering the force, then there wouldn't be any cops on the streets.

You're asking them to be machines and that's just unrealistic.......you by self admission have a short temper so you should be able to understand this better than a relatively calm person.
