Which Power FC will suit my S2 Neo RB25DET Stag and be a direct replacement for the stock ECU?

Hey Reuben, if your Stagea is an auto, there is NO PowerFC suitable as a direct swap, because the PFC does not have any software/hardware to control the gearbox. I've heard (but cannot confirm) that some people have been using the PFC with a shift-kitted (and maybe manualised?) auto. Tangles might have a bit more information there.

If you've got a manual s2 Stagea, then the PFC to use is the R34 version, with the "secret squirrel tweak" for the traction control which is standard on the R34, but not found on the Stagea.

I figured as much. Thought the auto would be different ... next time I'll mention its an auto too :/

I know the PFC is a standalone ECU, but could you still retain the stock ECU to run the auto? Or is it wrong to share signals for that function?

You probably could still retain the factory ECU, but the PFC is a full replacement unit, so it would take quite a bit of work to set up two computers to do that.

If I were you, I'd look at getting some piggy-back modules (such as the Apexi S-AFC and AVC-R, or their JayCar equivalents - there's plenty of info here about them already), or getting a piggyback computer like the GReddy E-Manage Ultimate(?) to control fuel and spark, leaving the standard ECU to control the box, etc,

RWD stageas have traction control well mine does anyway, i have an on/off button on the dash for it. i thought the secret squirel tweak was to stop the coils burning out. there was an article on an R34 auto with a shift kit running a haltech in an issue of fast fours or hot fours a little while. apparently with no problems???? i might try and find that issue and post it up.

no the tweak is to provide a traction control input for cars that don't have it - series 1 does not.

Also be careful, there are 3 different looms in s1 stageas and the pfc only works on 1 of them without modifications. I have another thread in here about this with same ECU part numbers

the issue is that the R34 powerfc pin 51 is for the R34 traction control. when there is no signal it throws an engine check light. the "secret squirrel" tweak is to send approx 3.6v (or whatever it is) to the powerfc thus turning off the check light.

on a S2 stagea with traction control it will probably just bolt in and work.

IF you do the Power-FC R34 GTT mod, you WILL need a) MV Auto shift kit for auto changes, to minimise gearbox damage thru lack of ignition retard on gear changes, eventually the gearbox will blow tho., b) you'll need luck as Duncan suggested, 3 different looms. S2 may plug and play with the secret squirrel trick, but its a risk.

Mine all worked, but I decided NOT to go ahead as I cant afford a gearbox rebuild. I sold the p-fc for what I got it for.

Currently dealing with Toshi for a ecu remap, my particular Stagea S1 ecu needs a small ecu - to - large ecu adapter plate soldered in, plus the ecu chip. looks to be around $650-$700 but unsure as at the moment.

Hope to have this sorted out in the next month, so will keep you updated. Chatting with Toshi every second day, so give me/Toshi a month or so and I'll report back in.

Once i get the ecu remap (wont be prefect as we are in different states, it'll be a guestimate), I'll have it soldered in and my car tuned with the SAFc/SITC still (fit hks actuator for 14psi stock boost) and let you know how it goes. he can remap for z32 afm, 040 bosch, highflow turbo like 2530 or 2540, 14psi, and use the safc/sitc for adjustments afterwards at your local tuner.

ppl will say the Nismo FPR is all bad, but they arent correct IMO. it helps when tuning a safc.

I won't go the PFC route now. But will it still pay to get an auto shift kit ... and what exactly does it do? Even with the shift kit it will still blow? I won't be lead footing it everywhere, 95% of the time putting around.

Wouldn't any fuel pressure reg do the trick? What about a rising rate FPR?

rising rate FPR's such as Sard are harder to tune the safc.

with the nismo adjustable fpr you can bump up fuel pressure by say 2psi, and that way takes a little load off the injectors duty cycle

easier to tune the nismo fpr with safc then the sard from all Ive heard/read.

the shift kit will maximise the length of the gearbox life, should extend the life, will get quicker shifts, minimises the time the ecu retards the ignition on changes, definately a AAA+ modification to do. install shift kit and auto service at MV Autos is around $400

ok so at a guess, with my S2 which is an RSV RWD only with traction control i should be able to plug in a R34 pfc and just be able to drive my car to a tunning shop. it is an auto but i dont really care when the box goes as it will get me off my ass to put a manual one in. i only have a filter and an exhaust so far but more mods are planned. anything else i should know? does the pfc have the capability to upgrade the AFM to Z32 etc.

yes, powerfc has a menu to change AFM's.

it should bolt in like on any S2 and runt he car but yours should/may/might not need any other modification as i would guess the loom will be identical with traction control to the R34 GT-t so no engine check light (after you switch off the boost control kit on the powerfc menu).

    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
