I am about to buy a r33 from Melbourne - almost ready to part with the cash, but have a few questions members might be able to assist with.

The car is a recent import and never been registered in Aus.

The seller has it complied and ready for rego in vic. Would it be better for him to register for 6 months in Vic and then just change to SA rego in a few months time OR

Get the car to SA and register it first up here?

He will give me a fair discount if I do the latter, but what implications does that have. The car is pretty stock except for 17" rims 235 tyres and a nice exhaust. Exhaust is a brand new Jasma stainless-steel 3.5" exhaust and muffler (cat back) with 4.5" tip, but is not loud just deep! He thinks I may have to put stock rims and maybe even stock exhaust to pass inspection?

Apart from that hassle I am ready to buy, flew over to Melbourne yesterday to have a look and Drive and it is excellent.

It is a stock auto, so it wont be breaking any performance barriers, but will keep the missus happy [it is mainly for her]

Any help or suggestions appreciated and sorry if this is a basic question, but....

get the car over here first. then get your zaust sound levels tested and the hight it is off the ground. make sure it has a cat in it. your rims are fine so long as the edge of them doest pass outside the guard. check your offset. im not sure what the legalities are there. i have some stock 33 rims for sale or hire if you need, along with the zaust too.

I'm no expert by any means but speaking from my recent experience with Sturt......if the seller can definitely prove compliance has been given (ie all the necessary documentation) and you are prepared to address the wheel & exh situation, then there's no reason why you couldn't get it through for rego in SA. The fact that it has never had Aussie rego before may be an issue as to whether you're allowed to take it to Sturt or if it has to go to Regency.

Ring Regency tomorrow and ask if a complianced import that's never had rego before can be taken to Sturt for ID inspection or whether it requires a more intensive inspection at Regency.

Nick (whiplash) on this forum would be the expert in regards to this matter.

exhaust and rims should not present a problem for rego as long as...

-exhaust is not over the prescribed sound level (94dB)

-wheels are not overly big (ie. extrude past the body of the car)

Perhaps to be on the safe side have him rego it first and then change to sa rego.

i do have mates who have bought cars that have never been regod in Aust and they thought they could rego them easy enough but it ended up being a 6 month battle with transport to get rego lol

as long as u see all import approval and appropriate documentation (compliance ect.) you shouldnt have a problem regoing the ca tho mate

Jasma is a term used in Japan that means street legal, street legal in japan doesnt mean street legal here necessarily

Stock Auto ... better not tell Dangerman his ran up over 300RWKW with an auto wasn't stock but dont assume auto cant be strong and have performance

Read all of the post mate, the seller is prepared to give him a fair whack off the sale price so just ring Regency first and go with what they say.

yes i agree the money off is great. i just mean to say be causious.

getting rego on it before you buy it would eliminate any worries thats all. what ever state the rego may be for.

You also have to ask the question why he is dropping the price when he's not registering it???

It makes me very suspicious and i suspect that not everything has been done for compliance.

EDIT!!

Since he's willing to drop the price put your salesman hat on and get him the rego it at the lower price and you pay for the 3/6 months rego. If everything has been done like he said it has then it should just be a fact of dropping off some forms and picking up the sticker, provided the inspection has been done which i don;t think it has by the sounds of it.

the reason why he would take off abit of the price is because the owner now wouldnt have to pay for....

-temp. rego to drive the car to inspections

-inspection costs (could be 1-2 times going through)

-in melb you need a RWC $$$

-stamp duty costs (about 10% of the cars cost)

-rego costs

could be more that i cant remeber

a few grad there. in all honesty, id just find one in adelaide already rego'd. the money you save from him knocking off the price of the car youll end up spending getting it on the road unless your getting it for 5k.

shipping cost, temp rego cost then all the things i mentioned above except for the rcw. regency here are not very nice to straight off the boat cars and you HAVE to go to regency for a car that has never been rego'd in australia for a full inspection  if you dont pass, the second time you can go to a cop shop like sturt unless you pull some dodgy shit like i did once haha

goodluck with your choice mate

I would definitely get him to rego it over there.

1). imagine you got it here and they an issue with compliance papers and needed more evidence or something = MAJOR headache.

2). they WILL make you put it over the pits at Regency if it has never been registered before and you just don't know if it has minor chassis dents from being moved with a forklift in Japan, minor hidden rust that they demand to be cut out, worn steering components that they demand are replaced, worn bushes, too loud exhaust, minor oil leaks, etc etc. The FURTHER it stays away from Regency the better!

if that is actually correct then regency could play hard ball........your objective is to get it to Sturt for ID inspection.

Where's whiplash?.....c'mon Nick we need your imput here

^^^^ its correct. a full inspection is needed for a car to be rego'd if its never been rego'd before in this country and you MUST go to regency.

second inspections are able to cop shops etc.

to get a police id check the car must first be rego'd in another state before coming here and even then, the police could make for further inspections if they wanted and they will force you to take the car to regency.

fair call Kye.....that puts a different light on matters

I suppose it depends how much the seller is prepared to reduce the price as to whether its worth the possible hassle of rego in SA

I always thought that import houses that do compliancing also included 3 or 6 mths rego in the total package unless it was brought over by a dealer for a stock order

Thanks for all the input! All good and most makes sense.

The dude in Melbourne actually brings in lots of cars. He is the brother of the gut that runs High

Performance Japanese Imports. This company is a compliance holder and import agent as

well. They comply his cars.

The dude tell me that he has sold many card to guys in Adelaide - only recently a r34 I think to a bloke from Blackwood - around a month ago. [if you read the forum please let me know how your dealings have been!]

The seller in Melbourne is called Adam, from Taylors Hill

As far as reducing the Price, he will drop around $500-$600 I think - making it a pretty sweet deal. I know I will still have to pay rego and stamp duty here but.....

That would make the price under 13000 which seems by Adelaide standards as top value... especially for a supposed grade 4.5 auction paper - I have a copy of this

AS I said, it looks great - no obvious repair or damage or even dents and scratches, the interior is immaculate, and the engine seems fine as does the transmission. I really had trouble faulting this baby and believe me I was trying. I have arranged a RACV full inspection for later in the week as well, and he didnt seem to be concerned.

I just need to remember to keep thinking with my head to my desire! I really want this I think!!!!!!

Thanks guys and keep the comments and suggestions coming!

For $600 get him to rego it there, that removes most of the risk and all you ahve to do over here is a quick ID inspection and everything is sweet. If it was $2k that he was dropping then that is a different story.

    • Not a problem at all Lithium, I appreciate your help regardless. I've pulled a small part of a log where the target pressure was 28psi and it spiked to 36.4psi. I've only just begun using Data Log Viewer so if I'm sending this in the wrong format let me know.
    • Sorry had a bit of a week and haven't had heaps of time to follow this, so apologies if I've missed something - any chance of showing a log with the rpm, turbo speed, MAP, and wgdc all in one view? Definitely an "interesting" problem, and while it's definitely worth noting that there was a similar issue with the twins I'd not completely put all bets on the root cause being the same thing.  Keep an open mind, follow the data.
    • I built this engine approximately 12 years ago so my own head (brain) is a little grey on the exact hardware in the RB head, however what I recall is. Stock RB25 NEO TURBO Intake Camshaft HKS 260 degree Exhaust Camshaft (R34 GTR) RB25 NEO Turbo Springs  I ported/removed the exhaust stud humps found in the RB25 head so theres less turbulence but it wasn't ported/polished properly, just a hump removal. I've attached two pictures of the before and after to illustrate.     The ECU gets its boost reference from the nipple on the rear of the head on the intake side, behind the fuel rail. The wastegate gets its boost reference from a nipple on the cooler pipe immediately after the comp cover.  Could a decent pressure drop across the intercooler cause the wastegate to be seeing a higher PSI than what the ECU is seeing, and thus it can't control it accurately and quick enough?   We ran a line to the actuator and watched it open and close using an air compressor, while we didn't have a gauge on the line to see when it was cracking open, it was opening smoothly.  I just removed the gate now and even though the documentation says you need to open it in a vice due to preload (which I did), there wasn't any preload on the cap, which is something we noticed straight out of the box as well when new. This silver cap internally is threaded to the actuator rod that runs out the bottom of the straightgate. Not sure how I'm supposed to get this spring out to be frank.. Potentially but everyone else doesn't appear to have to stop at 500kw because of 6boosts design.  I would, but I think I'm getting to that point where if I'm going to do the head and make another 100kw, then I'm going to need a fancy gearbox and quite a few other things and 10k becomes 20k becomes 30k within a few months. I'm not necessarily sold on the idea just yet that the head is restrictive at 4000rpm (and what.. 300kw?) and yet doesn't seem to be restrictive at 7000rpm when it's making 500kw, however I'm obviously not closing the door on that theory.
    • Yeah - Half the problem is I know this sensor actually goes to 150C.. I'm pretty certain it is min of 11C. So still more data required I suppose. It's really quite hard to get the oil temp to 100+ then immediately pull over and take a reading before the temp drops. Annoyingly I suppose the range I really 'want' is likely 80 -> 120C. TBH the ecu can't really *do* anything with it, and the gauge itself is very visible... ...but you know how it is.
    • My EFR 8474 Black, made 800awhp on a roller dyno. at 25-26psi. E85. Shaft speed was around 106,000rpm 1.01 rear. The rear is maxed.  6 boost Turbosmart 60mm gate 3.5inch exhaust  Head is worked to the shithouse. Bain racing. VCam. 272 exhaust. RB28 - RB26 foundation.  You have an intake issue. Start getting proper data and I mean go back to the simple things.  - Pressure test your intake - Block off the Turbo BOV, you don't need it.  - Test pressure before and after your intercooler If your head is pretty stock, that is your issue. Especially if it is NA.  Take it off and spend $10k on it.
