Suspension Install

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Currently i'm in the process of upgrading my suspension on my 33 gtst. I have some coilovers coming in but i'm curious about what i should do on the replacement bushes front.

I like to try and do as much as possible myself....but am i wasting my time putting all the bushes and suspension on myself to then have it properly aligned by pros? should i just get them to do the installation if they are going to end up changing a lot of my initial work anyway!? I am always keen to learn but i don't have money to just throw at workshops asking megabucks per hour. (I got a quote from one of the respected melbourne workshops for $1000+ for the install & alignment)

Cheers

When you consider most of that $1000 is the install, it makes sense to try and do it yourself.

The job is relatively easy, with only a few spanners / sockets required. The alignment will not be so far out that it will be a problem then to drive the car to the workshop for an alignment check.

If i do go down the full bush replacement path then it does seem to add up tho. The full SuperPro bush kit was like $900 on its own (from bursons or repco cant remember which now)... although i do know its a little cheaper to go the whiteline path.

If I don't get broked bushes swapped they will just chuck the coilovers in for $250....

So that workshop is going to charge you $250 just to install your coilovers???? That's a little steep imo.

Correct. Allignment too, but no replacement on bushes.

I guess in truth i do want to do it myself but i'm not interested in paying how much superpro expect for the replacement bushes. unfortunately pedders only make a couple bushes for r33's (sway bars and control arms i think) I haven't called whiteline so see what kind of price there full combo is yet...

its roughly $50 per end so $200ish + allignment so it sounds about right. you can do it yourself if its just coilovers, I did and just pay for the alignment. doing the whole bush thing is another story as some of them need a pressing machine and a bit of labour hence the cost. you will need camber kits at least if your going lower than stock ride.

A good shop will look over your car and tell you if you need to replace them or not. most of the time you dont need to.

have a look at sydney kids suspension group buy. might save you a couple bucks

Pressing machine ain't a problem, i have the technology at my disposal.

SK's group buy might be a good move as i'll prolly put in some adjustable sways at the same time. Does anyone know if you get new bushes with the sways because according to whitelines catalog they don't have a listing for them (the bushes that is)

    • Chatting one someone recently at racing them at QR. They say you can't take turn 2 in one flat stick in 4th. They don't have the torque to pull them selves straight, so make sure you're ringing it's neck out in 3rd instead
    • Many years ago when I bought my FG XR6T, it came with bald tyres on the back (think pretty much smooth for most of the tread) and brand new Kinforest cheap shit tyres on the front. In the rain, I had more grip in the bald ass tyres on the back, than the brand new Kinforest. To the point you couldn't drive off at a set of lights and turn the corner. Car would only go straight. Very quickly all four tyres were replaced.   A few years back on a VF SV6 I had, it came with brand new chineesium tyres. In the wet at 90kmh, old 1990s tray back tradie utes could corner faster than me. There was one corner on a freeway, in a 90 zone, it's not even marked to reduce speed for those curve, it's not a hard corner, I could put the LandCruiser on mud tyres through with ease (it would easily do the corner in the wet I reckon at 120kmh), the VF however couldn't get through it at 80, as it would want to slide out.   Cheap tyres aren't worth the risk. I like decent brakes, and decent grip.
    • It shouldn't swell like that, (just looked it up) it should say SAE J30R10
    • Anyone here a submersible fuel hose expert? I pulled my hanger out again for unrelated issues and noticed the hose I popped on last week has already swollen. This is Gates 27093 submersible hose. I've waiting on a response from Gates, but this surely can't be normal? This is on pump gas, not E85.  Is swelling a tad possibly normal? I've also been fighting with my power steering belt.... I've now tossed one and killed two. I just realigned my pulleys again, hoping this time it stays on. It doesn't like high rpm.
