I have just installed a Tomei hicas electronic lock on my 32 but I cant get the bastard into diagnostic mode to do the next step which is putting the shims in the rack.. I thought I could remove the lines and move the rack by hand then just bleed the system but if anyone has a better idea I'm all ears...

Better off gettin a lock bar cheap as! :P

Only reason I did'nt go with the lock bar at first is because its defectable and very detectable.. The shim kit I have hides under the racks boots and the electronic lock is tucked away, so you'd have to do some serious messing around to find that its been locked out.... All I need to do is get the bastards in tho! Think I might try some more this weekend to get it into mode and failing that I'll just pull the lines and deal with the mess...

haha, i had the same problem with my R33 (i know it's related to R32) , the shims won't fit and according to the manual, you have to loosen the nuts from both sides by 6mm and slide the shims inside then tighten them back. I think you need to remove the battery terminals to cut power to the hicas motor as well. I got a JP guy to translate what was needed. I know these instruction are for R33 but they may serve as a reference for R32 owners.

My problem is that I cant seem to get it into hicas mode to make the rack move so I can put the second shim in... still thinking of just letting the pressure out of the rack with what looks like a bleed valve on the rack itself, then moving it by hand... not 100% sure but wont be doing it for a while yet (no time)

I followed the directions that were given out exactly and all i got was really light power steering for the first few seconds of driving and then heavy power steering until i turned the car off again, and after a few months a leaky PS pump. I pulled the tomei box back out, left the shims in and the plug the instructions tell you to leave disconnected. I have no HICAS light on my dashboard showing either.

I would love to hear if someone has had success in putting this thing into a 32 and having no problems with it months after they have followed those instructions, and are still having no problems months down the track. I have been told they are for R33's only, I will pay someone to wire mine in if they know what they are doing.

Do you have a picture of the wiring under the parcel shelf?? Did you follow the instructions in the link?? I would love to see where i went wrong?

I don't have a photo - it is not that interesting.

The instruction I used were the ones in the kit from Tomei. I just got the colours translated from Kanji to Engrish & the wiring was done accordingly.

If you want to check your install I would check two things.

1. Use google to make sure the wire colours are correct ie the Japanese lines up with the Engrish which in turn lines up with the bit of kit.

2. Make sure you weren't looking at the plug connector upside down or whatever.

If you look up to and3 3's post he has the link for the pdf file on this which will give you the colours in english. As for the right wires to splice them into, you need to look at the diagram of the plugs and you will see it has a dark patch indicating the plugs clip, all you do is look at the plug, then the picture, and count how many wiring spaces there are from the clip to the end of the plug.. Ie: oooo####oo The plug is not symetrical so you can work out which way you are meant to be looking at it in comparison to the diagram (cant remember which way at the moment :thumbsup: ) then you just need to follow the direction of the wires in the diagram Ie: If it shows an arrow going to a box then the arrow is a male connector you put on and the box is its female friend and vise versa. Not 100% sure but I recon the direction that its wired would make a difference. Hope this is understandable and helps you out

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
