the day after i got my P's i went around a corner lost the back end over corrected did a 180 hit grass then hit a telephone pole did another 180 through a fence ending up in a pond , this guy came out and went off at us saying we were the 13th person to loose it on that corner and i said "sorry about ya fence i will pay for it" and he said it wasnt even his fence.

Good came out of it though cause i wrote off my car they brought me a damaged R31 to do up so i appreciate it more :)

Another story, my sister reversed softly into a petrol pump and put a small dent in it and did no damage to her car but it cost $900 to fix.

  • 8 months later...

Never had an at-fault acco, but have been involved in two, both rear enders, and both in the 33.

Funniest (in hindsight at least)

Anyway, a few months back, a bloke in a VT SS was behind me at a set of lights in front of a Caltex. The lights went green, the car in front of me went around the corner then stopped part way around (presumably to let a pedestrian cross, the road goes into a shopping centre), I stopped behind him as he was still partially blocking my lane, and the guy in the Commy behind me, who admits that he was 'looking at his daughter in the back seat' just ran straight into the back of me. His first comment was 'you were driving like a dickhead!!'. My response: 'I was stopped you retard'. He went on to comment about young hoons in import jap crap, and people being bad drivers etc. I just said to him then, 'which one of us wasn't looking out of the windscreen?'. I cut a nice 4.5" circle out of his front bumper with my muffler too :D

He started threatening me with 'I know heaps of people, I can make things very difficult for you'. His brother turned up, it turns out he runs the towing yard across the road from my dad's workshop ;) The cops turned up, one has a supercharged XR6 so we started talking about car stuff, the other cop's parents were selling a block of land to my parents. The guy that hit me said 'take it to this panel shop', I said 'I'm going there anyway, I know the owner'. All up, he was pretty pissed off ;)

He noticed that the car isn't very smooth on takeoff, I explained that this was due to my button clutch. He leaned in the window, and couldn't find it, dispite looking all over the dash, the centre console, steering wheel, door etc. He popped his head back out and said 'where is it?', and I said 'er... there...' as I pointed at the clutch pedal. 'No, your button clutch!! Where is it?!'. Explained what a button clutch is.

Him: What do you need one of those for? The car is bone stock.

Me: How do you know that?

Him: I'm a mechanic.

Me: Pretty shitty mechanic if you didn't even know what a button clutch is.

Him:

Me: Besides, how can you tell whether it's been modified?

Him: I just can.

Me: Didn't notice the intercooler at the front, aftermarket wheels, lowered suspension, or the tinted windows? You also can't see my turbo through the closed bonnet, can you?

Him: Er, no, but I can see you've put in a sunroof...

Me: That's factory.

Him: ...

Cops had arrived by this stage, he started pulling the whole 'bloody hoon driver' thing on them too. They said 'we can get a copy of the tape from the servo'. He went quiet... and he ended up paying for 100% of my repairs :)

Worst (well, nearly)

Driving along the Ipswich Motorway at Wacol, it was raining and this hero in an old V8 Statesman (about WB vintage) was spinning his wheels while merging. He pulled just in front of me, fishtailed to the left a bit, massively overcorrected, overcorrected even worse, bounced off the armco on the left, and ended up smashed against the trees on the median strip. This all happened about 5m in front of me, maybe about 10m after I'd started braking, and the only thing that saved me from running into him and/or some of the debris (I would not have been able to brake in time) was picking a gap and going through it. That gap meant heading for the armco myself, so I had to flick it back and let the car spin down the highway. I ended up stopped backwards on the highway... I ran over to the crashed Stato, abusing the hell out of the bloke, but when I got to him I went white. I thought 'oh shit, he's dead!'. I rang 000, got the ambos and cops out, by then the guy had regained conciousness but he was pretty messed up. A truckie who saw the whole thing from a distance walked over to me and said 'that was some of the best motherf***ing driving I've ever seen'. I said 'thanks man', then turned around and spewed on the grass... needless to say, when the police took my statement, I wasn't very complimentary toward Stato boy's driving...

Was in another accident too, mate was drivin his old man's VT on the freeway. We reached 200 kmh when the back tyres lost traction round a slight bend. Car spun 180 and started slidin backwards for what felt like a f#ckin life time! Hit the centre barrier, spun and hit the side barrier and smashed into the centre once more before we finaly came to a hault. No one was hurt. Still freaks me out thinkin about it.

coincidentally i was readin this thread earlier today too.

Hicks, this mate of yours, is his name Andrew Kirk by any chance?

Reason I ask is, this guy who went to my school did the exact same on the freeway in his old mans VT going 200 bounced off barriers and had mates in car, about 2 years ago.

was going the main road next to Garden City and was coming up to a T intersection, we had right of way as we were on top of the T. A bus pulled out of the bottom of the T turning right and stopped in the median strip. All of us could go through ok except an old 92 year old french guy follow the bus through the stop sign and then stopped right in front of me, i slammed into the back of his VL hardly leaving a dent but my tx3 front was a bit dented.

he got out of his car crapping on saying i was speeding etc. The car next to me was an off duty copper and the car behind her was a nurse. There wasnt any problems getting my car fixed thats for sure. ;)

Ive also crashed a heap of bush bashers while going stupid speeds around the farm trying to swipe tree's while sideways. Stuff just goes wrong, you hit holes, stumps, people grab the wheel and the car just goes where you don't want it. :D

A mate was driving one of the cars, a 120Y and he hit some soft sand sideways causing the car to roll over and back on its wheels and he just kept on going ;)

When I was 16, there was the token "older guy" that hung around who had a car. We all went camping one night and one of the 16yr old guys asked he could take this guys torrie for a drive... we all jumped in and he drove down some really thin roads in roleystone, where there is a sheer drop on one side. He decided to turn back, doing a three point turn and he reversed too far... the car rolled down the hill. 3 girls and 2 guys trying to push this thing back up... didnt work, so we walked for 5 hours back to the campsite and "token" asked us "did you lock the car".... hahahaha The morning wasnt so funny when he found out...

And my pearler of an accident, 3 days before my wedding, driving my 180sx down albany Hwy through Gosnells, I saw a guy trying to turn right (i had the green light) in front of me at the lights where the gossie hotel is. I said to my friend "check this dickhead out"... then he T boned me & pushed the car onto its side. We went through 4 traffic poles before stopping in the rose gardens at the front of the pub. A classy guy with a pint came out and said to me (while I was trapped in the car) "that was awesome can you do it again". Anyway... after realising my legs were trapped.. I started to panic... not 100% about being trapped... but more about how embarassing it would be when the firies came to cut me out. I pulled my legs out myself and climbed out the window... thank god I had a long wedding dress!

never had a funny acceident... seem to all go real bad...

worst one i had was as a passenger... sistere driving, gravel rd, pebbly stuff on an s bend over a gully near where i used live (Porongurup if anyone knows where the HELL that is...)

50/60km/h, pretty slow really, she lost control, put the car side on into a big-ass tree. - Dead centered my door (left hand front) and pushed me onto the centre console.

damage report kinda sucked - she split her lip - that was it... i broke 7 ribs, left hip in 5 places, and cut three extensor tendons in back of my left hand (covered my face = lucky)

spent 6 months in hospital

Needless to say, am a *remarkably* cautious driver with no crashes to my name yet - touch wood.

hmm about 5 days after getting my licence driving dads 3 month old patrol tried to make a right hand turn at a set of lights with no turn arrow would have made it if id thought to put the car back in 1st rather than bunny hoppin in 3rd anyhow a old falcon just wrote itself off around the front passenger tyre of the patrol to me it felt like i hit a lil bump not so the falcon falcon= write off patrol= new tyre and flare

being a hero in a bush beast (78 corrona no windows block of steel for front bumper) thought yea i can take this corner at 50 (MILES!!!) stupid! perfect drift until big tree got in the way

driving a buggy around an old sand pit thought i could put it round a ninty bend flat chat didnt consider the 10 meter drop on the outside edge rolled end over 5-6 times foot flat still so jumpin forward each time the wheels conected hit the ground and took off straight into the hill id just come down apparently verry funny not so from where i was

well well well... im such a good driver.. have not had one accident yet!!

BUT.. ive been in alot (I WASNT DRIVING!!)

When i used to live in childlow my mum was with a guy who was a comentatior for horse show jumping events. Anyways... i went with him one day down to the state equestrian center.

On the way there A massive tree fell right in frount of the car, Andy (mums b/f) swerved and only just missed it. We got to campersic road in the swan valley and a car pulls out of a side street and hits the side of us. The car was hit of the road and stoped 1 cm from a electricity pole. Anyways.. a bit shaken the car is still moving, so we contintue to drive to the equestrian center.. going up the drive way at the E.center another bloody tree fell on the bonnet of the car. That was the last straw. I got out and walked!! That day was really freaky. 3 accidents in 1 hour of driving. Maby we where just ment to stay home that day.

    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
    • OK, so regardless of whether you did Step 1 - Spill Step 2 - Trans pan removal Step 3 - TCM removal we are on to the clean and refill. First, have a good look at the oil pan. While you might see dirty oil and some carbony build up (I did), what you don't want to see is any metal particles on the magnets, or sparkles in the oil (thankfully not). Give it all a good clean, particularly the magnets, and put the new gasket on if you have one (or, just cross your fingers) Replacement of the Valve body (if you removed it) is the "reverse of assembly". Thread the electrical socket back up through the trans case, hold the valve body up and put in the bolts you removed, with the correct lengths in the correct locations Torque for the bolts in 8Nm only so I hope you have that torque wrench handy (it feels really loose). Plug the output speed sensor back in and clip the wiring into the 2 clips, replace the spring clip on the TCM socket and plug it back into the car loom. For the pan, the workshop manual states the following order: Again, the torque is 8Nm only.
    • One other thing to mention from my car before we reassemble and refill. Per that earlier diagram,   There should be 2x B length (40mm) and 6x C length (54mm). So I had incorrectly removed one extra bolt, which I assume was 40mm, but even so I have 4x B and 5x C.  Either, the factory made an assembly error (very unlikely), or someone had been in there before me. I vote for the latter because the TCM part number doesn't match my build date, I suspect the TCM was changed under warranty. This indeed led to much unbolting, rebolting, checking, measuring and swearing under the car.... In the end I left out 1x B bolt and put in a 54mm M6 bolt I already had to make sure it was all correct
