guys i was in full throttle into 3rd when i herd a massive bang and lost almost all power...

when i put my foot down it chockes and will only jump a little while it goes up the vacum line on my boost gauge (which it does exeptionally fast) as soon as it hit boost it just goes no where.

clearly i am thinking the turbo is blown since there is no flutter and will not show and boost on the gauge as well as heaps of smoke comming out of the exause

but why wont it idle properly or drive properly or even go over 2000rpm before chocking. i thought if i blew the turbo it would drive as a non turbo would??

most likely yoiu have blown a turbo. And it will run like crap. Some cases it would run like a non turbo. other cases it would feel like no matter how hard u try the car wont move much at all.

pull off the intake pipe leading to the turbo (rubber) and have a look at the comp wheel

The reason it may not idle properly is most likely due to the Oil from your turbo going through the motor and fouling your plugs...

As far as not going over 2000rpm without 'choking', I don't know what you exactly mean by 'choking' though could be in safe mod which I doubt so I would say it is just way to rich and getting bugger all spark.

Take it to a workshop mate. There are plenty of them in sydney and won't cost much to get them to have a look and diagnose whats wrong.

good thing i checked the cooler piping before ordering a new turbo!! the cooler piping just under the airbox had blown where it meets the stock piping but only to the side and not entirely off so it was still running but terribly and not boosting. i reconnected the pipping and the idoling returned to normal and the black smoke stopped after a few seconds. i took it for a drive and its boosting but ht ecar is sluggish and miss fireing. i am guessing this is because the spark plugs are in ruins after flooding the engine so much and so many times????? so i will buy a new set of them and see she returns to her boosting best

i've had both these problems, i have blown cooler pipes off (when i just bought my rb20 silvia) the guys hadn't put them on poperly this makes the car choke and stall when trying to move it. This afternoon, the turbo actually blew and i knew it was going to at some point as i was an idiot, i had no boost controll running for the turbo (usually watched the gauge) and no bov running. Was going to put on a bov n attach a bleed type boost controller but now i can't! ahh but yes ur problem is definatly a blown turbo, i'd say the exhaust wheel is blown bad luck, hame!

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
