it's been a hell of alot of research, car searching inspections & now i'm truly stumped. being on red p's i can't seem to have anything of decent power but these to pick it up a bit. always been a big fan of both but after checking them out i'm really unsure. wondering what you guys think.

yes i know topics of these cars a plentiful but i haven't found one for these two specific models as of yet.

if anyone has or has had any experience with either or both please help me out. it's been ages in getting it all sorted out & i want to finally buy this thing haha.

s15's are an amazingly sexy shape stock. r34 gtt's are quite ugly unless they have the nismo kit and look quite anorexic.

sr20 tuned will make some nice power but must rev and those motors are prone to popping rocker arms and scorring camshafts and possibly lodging in the timing chain.

This is from personal experience with my old s15.

the NA r33 i owned was the most reliable thing ever! the rb25 is a torquey motor with bigger capacity and after 20,000kms of thrashing everyday of its life it ran perfectly and never broke down.

Both cars drive fine though; the skyline has lighter steering while the s15 is a little firmer but feels steady.

My verdict is the s15: only 4 cylinders so better fuel economy better stock looks.

I know someone who has an S15 Autech, the S15 looks fkn hot, and has the exlusivity factor but don't expect it to be anything resembling quick, i'm talking like this thing gets outpaced by a bog stock VN V6.

Hard choice, but I'd personally go the R34.

thanks for the feedback guys.

i'd be driving fairly normally. sure maybe fang it every now & then a little but pretty much just look seeing as turbos are out of the picture, let alone any performance upgrades. it's almost like they want every p-plate jap car being a ricer. the s15 has the looks, a decnt engine but i wouldn't exactly be trying to race a stock anyway. it's just all class IMO. all they really need are some nice rims, a bit of a drop & a catback.

the 34 would be getting the kit, catback, rims & a drop, led tails, & possibly a wing depending on the one i decide to buy (looking at two atm).

insurance seems to be the thing that really splits it down the middle though. with the s15 at $6k whilst the r34 is $4.7k

as i said i like them both ALOT & they each have pros & cons. just making that final decision without having regrets is the hard part haha.

s15- pros;

smaller engine = less fuel $$$.

looks good as is.

s15- cons;

pretty damn small.

not as much power.

quite high insurance costs.

r34- pros;

bigger.

more powerful.

less on insurance.

r34- cons;

chews worse than s15.

not as good looking stock.

would end up buying visual mods for it then, knowing me that will turn to an additcion.

with the fuel thing i'm aware that neither are very fuel efficient but if i cared about that i'd probably have gotten a small car. stuff that.

also, has anyone had any experience with top secret imports in blacktown?

DAMN!!! paying insurance around $4k-$6k sucks ass hard!!! didn't know it was that much!! if i was in ur position that would turn me off on getting a import all together.

if i was in ur position i'd just get something else cause in 2 years of paying for insurance u could by a turbo r32, r33 or even a turbo 34! sucks to be on red p's.

yeah it's opretty rough but what can i say? i've always loved imports. when dad used to take me the the supercars i told him the skylines would be winning if they didn't make that bs rule haha. that ended the dad takes young dean to supercars races era pretty quick =P

you know, when you really like something you'll try to justify even the dumbest prices haha.

what other insurance places will cover an 18yo p-plater? the only place i've tried is just car as it seemed like the only real option. oh & nrma online quote on an r34 series 2 was $11463. i'm not lying or exaggerating either. after that quote i just thought to myself. WTF!? the car was gonna cost me 18990 yet they want well over half of that per year? plus $593 rego? hah!

note i'm actually on L's like 4 houirs left but was banned from dad's car coz of a fight & mum doesn't want me driving hers. too worried about her clutch. i showed her i can do all the stuff fine but hey, it's her baby haha.

yeah i heard shannons is only over 25s & assumed it was mainly classic car style insurance as in you drive it weekends only type of stuff. i'd be using this as a daily.

i think your overpaying on your insurance dude, have a look around

as for cars

autech s15 has the same amount of power as the stock s15 we got in aus. which isnt that much to write home about. plus youll pay a premium for them and thats if you can even find one.

dont kno about an NA 34 though

best of luck anyway

F*ck that mate. Friend just got a $30000 S2000 insured for alot less than that and he's on his p's.

My advice is to wait til you're off your p's and by then you'll be able to afford a R34 GTR!

Buy a barina.

i'd rather put a fork through my junk than buy a barina =|

i agree with the insurance. found a way around that now though. probably go r34. just for headroom. i'm just over 6ft & there isn't so much space in the silvia. like i think the interior is better. the handling feels more precise but overall room isn't so great. pretty much a 3 seater with me driving haha.

Yeh R34's benefit interior wise alot by the triple cluster.

Search around on here and you will pick one up for around $150 bucks. Then wire in some of your own gauges (oil pressure, volts, air/fuel etc) and it will spice up the R34 interior for a few humdred bucks.

The NA 34s look stupid because there is a big empty patch in the middle of the dash

heres a thought,

go riding round with no insurance if you got the chops for it lol.

considering the number of scum around where i live, don't get me wrong alot are very nice people but probably more are idiots. i don't think that'd be a great idea. especially the old finish work, walk out to the carpark & you're walking home scenario...

I think your silly to buy one with insurance like that. Actually you would be past silly...

not to mention has better brakes, suspension, LOOKS. etc etc. i know what you mean =/

stupid, stupid laws. just set the insurance better. $1153 premium. much better. think all up it's 1k if something happens?

TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back.
