IM buying an R33 from a dealer (have my reasons) and wanted to know if there are any major things i should look at it the R33 GTS25T Model and it will either be series 1 or 2.

Thanks

Also what would be the recomended coulour i am leading towards the metalic grey or silver..

Thanks

The Series 1 front lights tend to haze over so that may just be a little reason to choose a Series 2 so you don't have to change your front lights out. I'm not sure if that's normal for 'all' Series 1's but a couple of my friends have had to change them out. Good luck.

heh if your friends bought new lights because they "hazed" then they wasted a lot of money. You can clean that with any decent cut/polish.

If I were you I would lean towards the S2 simply because it's newer.

Yeah, that's what I told them because my civic lights hazed over and that's what I did but theirs were fogged on the inside. They cleaned the insides and resealed them but I don't think they sealed them correctly.

Rust more Rust and More Rust,,,depending on where the car lived in Japan,,,,they use salt to break up the snow. Check the boot area both inside and out. Remove the boot trims and have a good look/feel around. Also check up underneath all 4 guards and make sure it's all clean. Check for accident damage,,look at all the hinges and there bolts to see if a snappers been on them and removed some of the paint. Really you should have a good Mechanic and a Panel Beater/Painter/Detailer with you because these guy's know cars.

Lucky you,,,I have seen rust,,,both in the boot area where the boot floor meets the rear 1/4 panel extentions and up under the rear wheel arches.

Neil.

Check for rust even on a 33. It does happen sometimes. I've got a tiny bit of surface/bubble rust around my left rear passenger window, as well as some light surface rust around the bolts that hold the front guards on. I don't think it's anything to worry about for 5 years or more since I keep it garaged, but I think before then I should be looking at rust proofing it somehow. Check for any repaired crash damage, as these areas tend to rust up quicker.

As for the mechanicals, check for gearbox and clutch problems, plus the usual stuff like worn rings (blue/white smoke). They will blow a lot of black/brown smoke naturally because they run rich, so don't worry about that.

Silver or grey are good low maintenance colours because dirt doesn't show up on them easily (silver's a bit better for hiding dirt). I prefer black myself, but it gets dirty very quickly. If you like silver best then I would say to get silver.

I saw 3 r33's with rust when I was looking for mine... Two had rust in the boot and one had some in the engine bay...

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
