Hey hey, I'm current in search of a R34 and just want some advice on what I should be looking for in relation to how well the car im buying has been treated. What are the calling signs of these cars being miss treated besides the obvious eg: swelling in the radiator from over heating etc. I'm also needing to purchase the a Tiptronic model (Parter can only drive Auto's  ) how strong are there gear boxes and are there any generic problems with the sequential gears boxes i should know about before purchasing.

Cheers ~Sammy~

The tiptronics are great, they don't like being worked until the gearbox has been warmed sufficiently though and will just flare...I'm not sure if this was more of a protection feature as even new R34's I drove 'back in the day' did this.

Generic issues with the box are the shift solenoids breaking, it's crops up here and there...more likely though is the coil packs *will* die, try and get a car that has splifires already installed, or at least factor this into your purchase.

It's handy to run the ECU diagnostic as well, just to check any warning codes stored over time. You may get the odd minor one lie "O2 Sensor" or something more on the major side of "Ignition coils" "Shift solenoid" "overheated"

Shame you weren't looking around the start of the year, my car was for sale then (realistically still is haha)....not sure if I'm too attached to it now after the awesome changes it's had

Cheers, well i went exploring today and found what I believe to be exactly what im looking for.

Black R34 1999 model, 76,000 k's on the lock, turbo tiptronic etc... extremely good condition for 17,500. Just need to get the cash out but will have a few more good looks over the net this week to make sure. Now just need to go looking for mods I guess, my dad previously owned a 34 manual a year or two ago, anyone who lives in brisbane may have seen it around (HAR34 white with C-west kit) so I got a fare idea what im going for mod wise but any suggestions on smart mods to get done would be a big help. Plus still got an AVC-R sitting in the garage from my dads old 34.

Get the following

Splitfires

Turbo back exhaust

FMIC

ECU

Fuel pump

Injectors

AFM

Fuel reg

...some sort of HKS turbo, GTRS is great for the RB25

Ah great, thanks. What sorta prices am I looking at for the lot? I've got about 8g in the bank a bit more to play with if need be but id prefer not to dig into that. Prefer to spend as little as possibel including intall without a dodgey job being done.

Splitfires -$500

Turbo back exhaust ~$1000

FMIC ~$500 for a kit

ECU ~ $1800 (Max price installed & tuned) ROM is the best for auto R34's

Fuel pump ~ $200

Injectors ~$600

AFM ~$250 Z32 + plug (CRD sell them)

Fuel reg ~$150

...some sort of HKS turbo, GTRS is great for the RB25 ~$2700 (Brand new kit with everything in it...check out prices delivered from the US also GT2535 is great for ~250rwkw and a bit cheaper)

~$7700 (I'd say 100% on the underside of that if you shop around)

Everything there you could fit yourself over a weekend with minimal dramas, I'd advise a proper HKS turbo kit as it has everything you need, no messing around bolt-on...the ECU price is on the top-end as well, just to cover all costs, someone posted about a place that does install and tunes of R34 roms over in the bayside.

Cheers mate, big help. Just a question that will probably seem dumb but, can do it yourself over a weekend? Would ahve thought the car would require a good tune with some of these mods or are they just simple bolt on and go mods? And are there any mods there that would require the ECU to be changed, would just prefer to steer clear of the ECU and Turbo for the moment, the rest I will do all in one hit.

Depends if your technical minded or not..can always read the how-too section but thats boring! asking direction questions is the way to go! :)

also depends what tools you got.. if u wanna do stuff at home, try the front mount intercooler first see how your liking to getting your hands dirty, or splitfires..

Injectors, AFM, Ecu+tuning and zorst.. should be done at a proper workshop.. incase ur not too confident with the whole things...l

So goin to test drive a 34 tomorow.

*HKS SSQV

*HYBRID front mount intercooler

*APEXI power Intake air filter

*APEXI AVCR

*HKS turbo Timer

*Kakimoto 3 inch exhaust

* 3 inch Hi Flow Cat

* Stainless 3 inch Dump Pipe

* Stainless 3 inch front pipe

* Splitfires

Any general estimate on what sort of power the car will be running?

    • I mean it's a bit late to say "This won't have any tangible effect and it is not worth spending more than about three seconds on it, please just enjoy the car" But I said it anyway. Does the pod actually get any airflow in that position behind a bumper like that?
    • Hey guys - apologies for digging this up. Has this website been shutdown or is the outage temporary?
    • So, went shopping at Just Jap for things that might work for the intake  After some trial fitting there I ended up with a 3" x 45° silicone bend, a 3" x 300mm alloy straight, and a humped joiner, some minor trimming will be required to shorten some of the stuff, but nothing that is beyond my "ham fisted" skills The guy at Just Jap was most helpful as we had all sorts of joiners,  bends and stuff out trial fitting  Laying it out above the stuff in there it seems everything will fit nicely, and looking at it, it is probably the way I should have been looking at doing it from the beginning, probably..... In the end it is a front bar off job anyway to remove the original stuff behind the front bar that is taking up the required realestate needed, so maybe a Thursday or Friday job And because I'm a hopeless consumer, I grabbed some new steel wheel nuts, the current ones are a spline drive type with a "security" socket, that somehow someone keeps misplacing, the new ones are a basic black steel 17mm hex socket In other news: I just did my "final" tax return, I am now officially a old retired veteran pensioner, and I'm milking the system for all it's worth,  life is good
    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
