So, ive just narrowly avoided having my stagea written off again, just after ive had the thing in service the past few weeks and is now running perfectly. Literally just picked it up from the workshop and on the way home nearly had some dipshizzle rear end me on the william hovel roadworks.

As some of you probably know, the speed is dropped back to 40kmh because they need to stop the traffic sometimes. I was at the rear of a group of cars, almost stationary and I see a car flying up in my rear view mirror. I think to myself "damn hes leaving his braking late". I can see hes not slowing down so i began to pull off to the side onto the shoulder, and then i hear his brakes lock up so I give the stagea a quick squirt of gas onto the grass in the middle. He was almost certainly doing more than 90, my car would have been written off for sure.

Seriously WTF, theres plenty of things wrong here, how far ahead was this guy looking?? at his bonnet?? How the hell can people go so fast when the speeds been dropped back to 40 and still not give a shit about where theyre going, and what theyre running into.

This kind of thing freaks me out on the bike where the mirrors have a narrow field of view for whats in your rear view. I wonder what would have happened if i was on my bike, i almost certainly wouldnt have seen him. I would probably be busted up at the moment.

paranoia is your friend everyone is out to get you. pay attention cos you cant trust anybody else to!

sorry end rant

Sorry to hear it mate,

Another case of Canberra drivers not giving a rat because they are so used to our open roads!!!

I believe in frequent licence test!!! Sure would be a pain in the @ss but at least loosers like that wouldn't have the opportunity to ruin our pride and joy's.

Smooth move shifting out the road by the by. how many people would have simply braced for impact?

Damn!

License retests wouldn't solve this problem. Big-brother style hidden speed cameras and/or computer-controlled situationally aware decelerators built into cars *might*. But would also decrease driving fun for the rest of us 'responsible' people. And anyway, even if we had them, they'd build a bigger idiot. If I had to pick my worst pet-hate, it's tailgaters. My second fear is being rear ended while waiting stationary in a slip lane, by someone watching the traffic ahead of me instead of what *I'm* doing (since that has already happened to me once).

pretty sure there is a section on the monaro that is 40 at the moment...near the queanbeyo turnoff near hume...

no one in the morning goes 40...as soon as your out of the speed camera its straight u to 100 :P

me and my mate do 40 in each lane sometimes just for a laugh...then we get to give it a quick blast up to 80 wooooo

Edited by Gus-

yeh im not a speed nanny, its just theres a time and place, and when theres traffic and people working on the roads thats definitely NOT the time. it bugs me so much that some people dont look ahead, even after going past the "60KMH" sign, then the "POLICE PATROL THIS WORK SITE" sign THEN the "40KMH" sign

temporary speed bumps i wonder? :P

im sure that wouldnt be popular, maybe bottleneck the road a bit further back to make sure people slow down?

this almost happened to me on the monaro on the way home the other day the traffic was stopped some asshole jumped in to my lane i had to jam on my brakes and stopped a 4WD behind me was to busy talking on the phone ( i know i take in to much detail when driving) i saw all this in my mirror so i just ran straight off on to the grass i hear 4WD tyres screeching with pain as he jammed on the brakes i gave him a serve about being on his mobile after following him to chisolme shops. skyline Vs massive bullbar and a huge weight behind it = fail. i saved my car by paying to much detail when driving

stalker much... lol

i know how you feel though.. when someone does something so blatently stupid on the road you just wanna pull them over and say "WTF"

i was going that way anyway so it just seemd like a good time to vent my anger he got a total shock and was really apologetic

Oh don't get me wrong not something I'd ever do. I think I'm more after something deliberate like a flame thrower to all the frigging idiots that keep driving so far under the speed limit in the right lane!!! Belconnen way today was the worst!!! Boxed in Kat = ANGRY Kat.

its those GTR drivers ;)

the stagea helps to soothe your nerves in rush hour.

one morning i was going at a crawls pace along the william hovel stretch in the bumper to bumper time, and i was keeping the car steady in 1st gear, and a crazy woman behind was speeding up and slowing down right up to my bumper and swearing her head off the whole way. damn frustrating but i didnt stoop to her level.

    • As I've said elsewhere, I am using the stock intercooler piping path in the engine bay, and a return flow cooler, and making ~250 rwkW (without any effort put into trying to turn it up past there just yet) and expect to be able to make some more, and frankly, I would be perfectly happy with 260-270rwKW. This is peak road Skyline usability territory. You go past there and, sure, the car will snap necks more when it's on boost, but it will also break shit all the time, cost a (even larger) fortune in tyres, etc etc. Anyway, I also do not like the over-the-fan pipe path, and you don't have to do it.
    • I see, honestly I’m not too fussed about the looks. The only reason to go plenum is to make the piping easier instead of the classic over the rad etc.
    • Not easy to quantify wrt something like how many fractions of a second slower it would be over 0-100. But given that a 250-300rwkW car is able to do that launch sprint in 5-6 sec (and faster with appropriate tyres, and surface)..... giving up as much as a second would feel like torture. A ~450HP capable turbo is not going to make lots of boost in the 2000-3000 rpm range. So, whilst with some boost on hand it will be faster accelerating in that rev range than your engine currently is NA, it will not feel like a fast car until the boost is solidly in. You know what your car feels like right now when you open it up at 2000rpm. if you've ever been in an actual fast car, you will appreciate that the NARB25 is.... not exciting. Well, add some boost and it will be better. But shorten the intake runners and it might not be better at all. It might come out better, but it could end up feeling the same. For me, it's not the 0-X km/h sprints that matter. It is easy to fry the tyres with anything over 200 rwkW. You can't use all the power available in 1st and 2nd anyway, you have to modulate the throttle. What matters is how the car reacts when you're driving in traffic in 4th or 5th and have maybe 2000 rpm on board, and you want/need to add some speed quickly, and don't have time for the downshift. It won't make boost, it will be all NA (at the speeds we're talking about - remember how fast you're going at 2000 in 4th! and don't plan on breaking the limit by too much.) So giving away NA torque is not what I would consider practical for a street car. And retaining that NA torque builds boost faster which makes the car faster. The flashy plenum is not actually better, unless you're looking at a track car where you can keep it on the boil all the time.
    • So how much difference does it make you think? Like 1 second in the 0-100?  I was have smaller turbo so hopefully that spools quick GTX2871.  currently it’s NA so you can imagine pretty slow, but I do want fast accusation a little as there’s not many places I’ll be driving where I go over 80 even near me. So 0-60 and 0-80 targets
    • Short inlet runners cost quite a bit. Dulls off the off-boost torque, and delays boost onset, because arrival of boost is driven by gas flow is a product of the ability to flow air which is torque. This is the reason that the stock manifolds have longer runners. On a 3L, or bigger, you can usually accept the compromise of giving away some torque because the extra capacity gives you a little extra to waste. But on a smaller motor, there's not a lot there to start with. Example, I swapped RB20 out of my R32, 25NeoDET in its place. The "wall of torque" that I experienced afterwards made it all worthwhile. That's because I came from RB20 land where torque is not a thing. But I would not do anything, anything at all, to reduce the low/mid torque I have now, because I remember what it is like to not have it!
