has any1 modded or purchesed a custom plemun or modded there existing plenum that actually looks anygood

i have seen modded and custom plenums but im not happy with the look of em.

i would like to mod the existing 1 preferably.

any 1 that has done it or no anything good and bad bout it, info would be much appreciated

they're designed the way they are in order to capture/disperse the air equally

when you move the inlet to the front (I take it this is what you mean?) then you aren't getting equal quantities of air into each cylinder

best way to go if you have to mod your plenum is get some engineered plenum (with the scoops etc) like a sub zero one, or get a brand name one as they've done the work already and have proven results (as far as I'm aware anyway!)

I'd jsut stay with the stock one and increase the tb size, as I read somewhere the other day they have better torque producing figures than the gtr plenum at high revs/boost

Although at the same time I could be talking bs, but that's what I remember

My mate can make a custom plenum on the existing intake runners. Looks very nice, and some of the cars running them have made 400rwhp+, so they work aswell. If you want details then PM me.

I agree that the cut and shut plenums seem like a bad idea, but I have seen a few that still seem to make good power.

The stock plenum has had sweet bugger all engineering into dispersing air evenly. It may do, somewhat, but thats more a matter orf course than design. Nissan's target was to lower the cost of ic piping and shorten its route. That they suceeded at, at the cost of an undersized 'cooler, but even air disperstion was not at the top of their list.

I should take pictures of the stock one I have lying around here. The throttle body is positioned such that it blasts air right down the neck of cylinder 3 and 4. No deflectors or trick engineering gone into it at all. I'd be willing to wager that cylinder 3 and 4 running lean is the cause for a substantional number of rebuilds.

Properly done, a cut'n'shut should have no problems out doing the stock plenums job, just have to take it to someone who has experience with it. If you're still sceptical, consider the number of oem plenums that are front facing log-on-top-of-runner styles: ca18det, sr20det, 4g63, 1jz and 2jz. All very similar to what a cut'n'shut ends up being (especially the last two).

The proof is in the works though and Steve-SST has given mine a thumbs up, so it'll interesting to see how it'll fair.

how much for the rb25 tb's? will need one soon for a custom plenum, making it myself with the help of a fabricator so will see how it goes, shoudl save me the 600 he normally charges for this sorta work

also does using a larger tb require aftermarket manangemnt or can i use the safc to clean up the mixtures...

As long as you can mate your current throttle position sensor onto the new throttle body, you shouldn't have many problems with the ecu recognizing the tb. Fueling might be an issue though and a s-afc won't be as good as a remap.

In reply to myself, I finally got a pic taken. Not all that clear though. I was holding the plenum "steady" and the half a dozen beers I had before hand had some say in that.

Thats looking down the throttle mounting plate. The light you can see through there is coming in the through the entrance for runner 3 & 4, which is just off the top of the frame. So what happens to air thats blasting in there at 1-odd bar? Some of it hits the runner divider and scatters, but the rest, the majority, takes the path of least resistance to low pressure goodness and ends up in cylinder 3 and 4.

Horrible design.

    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
    • Can you also make sure the invoices on the box (And none exist in the boxes) are below our import duty limits... I jest, there's nothing I need to actually purchase and order in. (Unless you can find me a rear diff carrier, brand new, for stupidly cheap, that is for a Toyota Landcruiser, HZJ105R GXL, 2000 year model...)
