I live about 20-25mins away from these illegal street drags that were mentioned on www.news.com.au (im not sure for certain coz i've never been to them and don't know -exactly- where they are).

We have legal street drags at Sydneys Eastern Creek drag strip every second wednesday and let me tell ya ur doing well to watch 1 good meeting in every 4. The cost is $15 which i believe is alittle exxy, around $8-10 would be more the suitable price I think. The facilities are very good and you get a full view of everything from the 1 spot so that isn't a problem.

With the drags being held from 5pm-10pm on a Wedneday during a normal week just isn't right at all. Most people are stuffed from work and couldn't be bothered attending (or is it the entry fee's).

Then for the drivers it costs $45 with no guaranteed runs. If you dont get there before 5pm your lucky to get 2 runs if that before the night ends. It would also be quite difficult for 90% of the working population to get there at 5pm to race.

In <3mths the new dedicated drag strip will be ready to go. Hopefully this means cheaper prices, weekend runs and in general a much better experience for the average jow blow (ie; actually being able to drag your mate instead of being paired up with a 9sec Pac Rotor).

I bet everyone whos taking the 'drags and driving fast is bad mmkay' stance has never done high speeds in their line on the street before... pfft

No offense to the choir boys in here but a nice blast along an empty freeway/highway at night vs another nice car is bloody fun and im sure no-one can deny that. The hype thats been surrounding the "illegal drags" is ****ing ridiculous.

Calder is too expensive too infreqent and generally just shit house. Most people cant be bothered driving 140km to a strip either. So whats the natural bloody alternative, people on the street. Number 1 the way these media dickheads make our the drags you'd expect to go there and find a demolition derby with the general public having to duck for cover and rescue their children and grandparents blah blah blah. What crap the street runs are held in ****ing industrial zones late at night with no Joe Public around.

If the cops/vic gov. had so much ****ing regard for public safety and a genuine interest in getting the racing off the street they'd help provide a place for people to go that doesnt required 4 tanks of fuel to get there.

... lets make it possible for these ppl to do so in a safe environment more often... calder i hear u say??? PFFFFFFFFFt 50 ****ing dollars for around 3 of 4 runs... get real... the dragways in NZ are held more often and in more places and cost a hell of a lot less... if they made it more affordable and at more than one far away venue this would more than likely cut down the illegal stuff.

adding to that:

"FRIDAY EVENINGS

GATES OPEN 5.00 PM

RACING 6.00 PM

COMPETITOR ENTRY $55.00 (Incl. GST)

ENTRY - BURNOUT COMP $40.00 (Incl. GST)

SPECTATOR $17.00 (Incl. GST)"

yeah good one, make everyone drive through friday f**king peak hour traffic to get there too...and $17 just to watch - no wonder there are so many 'spectators' at the illegal drags...

of course there is always heathcote as a back up - only $40 but spend $30 in fuel at least to get there and back driving for f**king 2 hours each way...

I would rather go on a cruise personally :D

we need more venues or at least better access to the current ones - ie. price, time and frequency of events...

/end rant :)

AMEN BROTHER DALE :)

$40 just to do burnouts - come on, thats just a little silly.

Just for an average chump like me, leave work (30 mins early mind you) at 5:00pm.. get there if I rush around 6:20pm...pass go and pay $9.30 citylink toll + $20 petrol for the night. After that the lineup is pretty long and i'll be lucky to get 3 runs. So by the end of that I've ended up paying $85 just to get 2-3 runs. Really not so cheap, but i'll do it anyway :D

Compared to $125 defect notice (if you're unlucky) you can see why people don't do it the legal way..

Yeah it sux, yeah its difficult and yeah there are few other options. But unfortunately the Govt isn't gonna build a dragstrip closer to Melbourne just because a tiny minority, yes we are tiny in their eyes, wants one. Nor will insurance companies drop public liability premiums which would lower entry fees. We all know how much $$$ there is to be made. Why should they charge less when they are making a killing? Would you?

Ppl who wanna race have two options, legal or illegal. One way is expensive and involves little return for your money if there are big turnouts at the tracks. The other leads to increased negative police attention, tougher penalites for traffic infingments and higher vehicle insurance premiums.

Coming from someone who has no interest in racing his skyline this prolly sounds cheap but my advice is to get used to it.

Either pay the $$$ to do it legally or pay the price by going illegally. the choice is yours.

If we're so tiny why so much publicity and police attention/resources? I thought it was a matter of public safety not what we want.

Why not just open up sandown? Is that so terribly difficult to manage? Its close to all eastern suburb racers, its a nice track and its hardly used.

Im simply stating the fact that cops and govt fags seem so insistent upon ****ing over anyone with a nice car rather than work on the cause of the issues. Ie. Nowhere to race? What do they think people are just gonna throw away their cars and forget racing coz they dont like it. cops ass.

/my 2 cents

Sandown has HUGE restrictions on when and what they can hold due to noise pollution and the surrounding houses. Yes I know it a load of S#IT but what can you do. I think it would be an awesome idea to have a drag track in the SE suburbs myself! We need new tracks! It they want to get street racers off the road then give them a place to play.

So it has to be either miles from anywhere (then people don't go because its too far), or near a residential area...then people complain because of the noise, and yet if illegal drags are held because there is nowhere to go, then they complain again..

Hmmm.. kinda hard to keep everybody happy but there must be some sort of way it can be done!

Two things spring to mind.

1. People knowingly moved into houses next to a racetrack and end up complaining. haha, and humans are intelligent :D

2. Make a closed pipe, dB restriction rule. Majority of street racers have relatively road legal cars.

Only two possibilities i understand the noise pollution issues of sandown. But they arent really insurmountable problems imho.

Damn straight man, how stupid are these people. They are on the same level as the people that move in next to live music venues and the have them shut down as they "disturb the peace". Pffft, Whatever!

I've been to a few of the illegal drags in Vic, well... the east-side one anyway!

very organised, but as mentioned previously... 1 in every 4 is actually good!

most of the night is spent going from venue-venue, have 7-8 runs... get back in the cars and leave due to police that have been called to the scene!

I left my car at home and went with a few mates in a stock Mits. Verada! Try and get defected in that :D

I don't condone street-racing, and rarely give my car stick at a set of lights!

As previously mentioned... it's about a rush, but I also think pride factors into it, and the whole 'my d1ck is bigger than your d1ck'.

for many it is pride in winning! but for the majority of Import owners it's pride in their vehicle and not wanting to risk the cops impounding it!

just my 2c... :)

it comes down to:

Do u want a fine?

Do u want a record for future reference?

Do u want to be defected?

The possibility to get your car towed?

Possibly get sent to jail for serious stuff?

etc...it's all good to watch but to do it unless u know what your getting into its not really worth it.My 2 cents..

A mate of mine went ages ago in a pos Charade stocker. The fuzz went over the car and couldnt find any reason to defect it, so asked him to turn the headlights off. The piggy walked away and spoke to another piglet for a few minutes. At this point my mate realised he was slightly blocking traffic so he proceeded to move the car to the side of the road and wait for sargent stoopid to return. The sarg returned and asked "Why were you driving at night without your headlights on?" My mate copped a $135 fine....

Just coz your in a stock car dont mean they wont use every trick in the book. He deserved it tho :P

i live in dingley which is like a 15min drive from sandown and yet when they have the supercars these restrictions are wavered... ffs its day time. I can hear them from my house and sometimes when they are practicing in the early mornings (i sleep lated due to night shift) i get woken up... not many of us have cars as loud as supercars yet we have all these BS restrictions...

    • I sense an out of control build thread coming up lololol. That 450kW goal will end up being 600 to 700kW LOL.
    • Nice, thanks for sharing your progress....that's a pretty long list you are putting into it!
    • Decided to upgrade my pressurised plastic coolant expansion tank for a fancy pants alloy version The OEM versions can get brittle, even the new plastic one I got when I first got the car is a starting to show signs of "stress" I wasn't cheap, but it is basically unbreakable
    • Morning all, I have an RB25DET Neo that's in need of a rebuild. Will need new pistons etc due to detonation damage. Would anyone be able to recommend a shop in Southeast Queensland who I could bring my long motor to for a rebuild? Just want someone who knows RBs and whos built a bunch of them before. TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back.
