Hey guys i am looking at putting on new and better rotors and calipers on my gtr.i was told to get wilwood kits and that they are the best but pretty pricey. I dont think its worth getting the best but i dont want to get an ok set i would like something that is going to have the stopping capacity and last a while not 6 mnths. The car will see track in the near future but would be a 50% road and 50% track. what other brands are the ones to go with ? and what else is involved with better rotors and calipers ? like do i have to change any oil lines or type of brake fluid ? that sort of thing ?

cheers.

Willwood make great calipers and they make cheap made to a price stuff. They make too many calipers in my opinion and relegate themselves to the too hard basket unless you have really dont your homework. Their good stuff is good but as you said expensive.

Budget is king with brakes, consider what you are willing to spend and go shopping, as budget will dictate. New you will be looking at up to 4k for fronts and similar money for rears, but common rear upgrade is just the GTR Brembo, or the N1 rear which uses bigger rotors again with a similar Brembo two piston caliper.

The 50% track and 50% road thing is all in the pad selection. If you have enough rotor to dissipate the heat then you can get away with a pad that may do both...but the trade off is wheel size requried to run brakes, whih means expensive rubber, more unsprung weight etc etc. So, finding the right brakes at the right price sux :D

i assume when u say gtr brembo theyre from the brembo brand ? iave got which look like dba ones on the front but theyre on the way out and stock on the back so i mite investigate the brembos.as for price. i dont like to put a price on brakes. i need them to stop so to me its worth spending the extra money on something good. but thanks for the advice.

But what power is your car making? What tyres, what wheel size what suspension? You may find that being an R33 that you can get away with good quality pads and decent vented rotors, at a minimum DBA5000 but preferably something better

atm its around the 400 450hp. have standard suspension though i want to fix that at the same time as brakes etcc. tyres are 275 all way around falken fk452's something like that.

Considering the tyre and suspension, i would suggest you just get some good pads, and good fluid. Remove the dust shields and consider some braided lines. Though as Lotus will suggest...dont let me anywhere near youcar come fitment of said goodies :/

Spend you money on better suspension rather then too mcuh on brake hardware. If your rotors are shot then consider some DBA 5000 or preferably direct replacement 2 pce Endless or Project U rotors. As for pads i have really liked Endless CCX, though its possible they are hard on rotors. Though my car having problems with DBA 4000 and RDA rotors and the CCX pads is hardly enough evidence to support that theory :(

I trial fitted them to my car. Nice kit, basically an AP kit, only you need to make sure you get the 355mm kit and not the 330mm kit. Difference being the 330mm kit is 26mm thick and the 355mm kit is 32mm. On an S13 etc the 26mm thick rotor may be ok...but on larger more powerful cars you really want the extra width in the rotor...i think:) They have a loyal following and i will admit the rotor hats are beatifully designed

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
