After long running dramas, my R32 GTR is back on the road.

It is running well. I love it. Many thanks to Glen from ESP for finishing off the job.

So, what was done to my car...

- Radiator flushed, removed all rusty gunk

- New coilpack

- New wiring loom

- Radiator top tank replaced

- New HKS throttle body and inlet manifold gaskets

- New oil and filter

- New fuel filter

- New silicon radiator hoses

- New metal pipe assemblies

- New timing belt

- New fan belt

- New tensioner pulley

- New idler pulley

- New thermostat

- New water pump

- New crank seals

- New platinum spark plugs

- New fuel hoses

.... etc etc

Total expense was over $6k. I lost count.

I'm looking to replace the turbos. Any recommendations? I looked at SAU traders list, saw Garrett turbos for about $2500. Anyone bought and tried these?

I'm not so keen on high power, but I'm more keen on getting my car reliable.

Any comments or ideas?

Yes I have them, but there are many varieties. 2860-9/-7/-5 are all the same price approx max KW 290/310/350. (very rough)

if you are not after power the 2860-7's (similar to N1 turbos and the HKS GT-SS kit) are probably your best bet if you want to push them they are capable of ~320kw the 2860-5's (similar to HKS 2530's) are more of a 350-370kw setup.

Ditto -7 or -5

I currently have the -7 and I think I'm reasonably happy with them. I'll let you know later this year if I'm happy with them or not. They'll finally be able to be pushed to show some potential soon! :O

Do some reading into the -9 though because I have heard that they are a fantastic turbo and are very underrated!

I kept having to squeeze past your car in my garage, so I got a pretty good look at it numerous times... Very neat and clean. Curious about the MR2 club sticker on the bonnet though :O

I'm still a committee member / webmaster for the MR2 club of Australia and the ACT division. I ran the club in 2005 when I had an MR2. I don't think Glen remembers, but he dynoed my MR2 when he was working at DTS many years ago.

Thanks everyone for the info on turbo, I'm very much considering to buy Garrett GT2860-5 or -7 in near future.

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
