I was looking at the oil pressure gauge (a trust aftermarket jobbie) yesterday, and i noticed that under heavy braking it drops down (from whatever reading say 5-6bar) to virtually idle pressure (say 1.5 bar). Now i repeated this scientific study a number of times further, and on each occasion it still happened. Note that i did not de-clutch the car and run neutral - obviously pressure will fall off as RPMs drop to idle.

What is causing this, and should i be worried? The oil pressure gauge is working normally - is this a form of surging that would require a larger sump? Or is this simply a normal thing on RBs?

A little worried, but no nasty noises.

Could be the oil rushing to the front of the sump and away from the pickup ?

You might need a baffled sump if you go to the track a bit...

It's interesting though, I'll keep an eye on my gauge and stomp on the brakes a few times and see if I get the same..

LOL - it'd be good to bring it up in the other thread, see if anyone else has had the problem.

It's interesting though. I've heard that the Rb26 sumps are prone to oil surge due to lack of baffles, so it's possilbe that the same goes for the RB25's...

As long as you've got some pressure there it should be OK :D

Just got home from a spin around the (big) block, another quick note - this will not show up on the factory oil pressure gauge - it is far too slow reacting. You will only really notice it with an aftermarket gauge :D

if you were going to baffle a sump i would think you'd want to increase the capacity from 4.5L to at least 6L... there are a couple of shops that have increased capacity sumps available - can't remember off the top of my head. I think it would be a good idea anyway, because 4.5L isn't much :)

when i rebuild my motor one of the area that i invested alot of time was oil presure problem associated with rb motor, more rb dies due to spun bottom end bearing than aany other form of death. what i did was welded 2 surge plates with 10mm holes drilled into them and inline with my oil cooler is a 5 litre oil reservoir where oil is stored and cools off before re-entering the motor. as under hi rev 5000+ u will find the sump ia basically empty and ll the oil is sitting up in the rocker covers, this is a fact!!

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
