definitely Starrys or drug squad.

couple of mates of mine are starrys, Zouma & Pacey (real names withheld) and you are correct in saying not to mess with them.

if they stop you car for any reason, they'll have you out of the driver's side window before you have time to touch the door handle......even if your window is wound up, lol

I knew a starry years ago. He helped to handle some hostage situation out bush many yonks ago. He said his 'negotiation' was with his trigger finger. Funnily enough, that how the seige ended.

Not defected any more but a question that will benefit those that might be defected,

Ive had my resonator smashed up by a wheel alignment place and it started to leak. It was due to exhaust hanging too low. So i got it replaced by a hotdog on a recommendation from the shop. Currently the car is running a 3.5" catback Trust mild steel system (imported like this) with a 3.5" hot dog and a Trust cannon muffler.

Its not that loud as it is however I would like to lower the noise a bit more as

1. I don't want a loud exhaust as it gets annoying on long trips,

2. I don't want attention from every wanker trying to be a red light hero

3. I want to keep the authorities happy (although its pretty much on par with your average hsv rumble)

So what are my options in reducing the noise? I would like to keep the cannon and 3.5" exhaust due to a fairly free flow.

Ive heard that baffle plates reduce the noise a bit if done correctly which i would like to give a go. Anyone know of any good designs?

marko - baffle plates reduce the noise and will definately reduce the performance of the car

to keep you exhaust note on the low think of inserting another resinator and a mid muffler

i have a trust system with a mid muffler and its really and i mean really quite on the low revs and opens up on higher rpm's

so have a look into that as well mate instead of a baffle plate

What about a silencer Marko? PM Sled about it, I think he was running them in his GTR

pete had a cannon silencer which you could take out if you wanted 2 minute job etc

ok so baffle plates are not the best solution then. Ive had a look and took a few measurements under the car and i don't have much room for another resonator. I could probably squeeze a smaller one in but i don't think that it will do any good.

The said silencer, is it one of those cone shaped things with a pipe behind it that you shove in the muffler itself?

Those cone things are defectable. Visible silencers are defectable. They can shoot out... even if they're bolted in, they're still defectable. Has been covered before.

Baffles, resonators or steel wool works a treat, and is legal (not so much the steel wool, but it's a temporary fix).

You're talking about the ones you see advertised in the Hot4's magazines and stuff...

If you can hide it well enough, then you'll get away with it. But yeah that's defectable, too.

You either run your car permanently loud or permanently quiet. It's only when you get defected for loud is when you shove items into the exhaust to quiet it down. That's what I did with my old Familia.

and for that exact reason people get baffle plates made up and shove things like daniel mentioned (steel wool lol)

I got my Stagea defected on Wednesday night last week (12/02/09) on Marion road just by the expressway overpass.

The officer said that my "exhaust was too low" and my wheels are too big. He didn't even check the tire placard, just assumed. Sure they might be 18x9.5+15 compared to the stock wheels that are 17x7.5+30, but the fact he didn't even look up what size they should be really got me. He ticked VIS so now I have to go to Regency. He said I will have to change the exhaust on the car, even though it is exactly the same as it was when it came through Regency originally!! He really wasn't interested in what I had to say, even when I told him I had a Senior Constable come to my house to check my exhaust due to complaining neighbors, and it was fine for noise and mounting.

I read in one of the first posts in this thread that you can call Regency and dispute the fact that you have to go for an inspection, and maybe you can just go to the cop shop and have the defect reinstated or cleared. I am going to do this because the defect is ridiculous.

Mmm that'd be tough to dispute that, Peter. In the eyes of Regency... it's a legitimate defect. If you got defected for... say... having a orange blinker, you could dispute that as that's clearly not a real defect.

It's the biggest load of bullshit that a cop can just look at an exhaust and say "Yep. Must be too loud" without any DB testing on it or anything. Same goes with the wheels... they really should check the tyre placard!! Even with tint, a cop can simply 'assume' that the tint is too dark without any testing.

The ID check you were talking about that you went through doesn't really matter. It's not a defect check, but rather, a ID inspection/compliance check which checks the bare basics (wheel size, etc). I went through with a big exhaust, turbo timer, etc through the ID check and they really didn't care. They can give you a defect, though... but you'd have to be pretty unlucky to cop one through there!

You can try to dispute it, but don't be shocked if they turn you down.

thats seriously not right

i thought that if the tire placard says that the car has stock 16's then you could definately go 2 inches higher

so whats the deal with that

exhaust too low...thats debatable and shouldnt be a regency though

goodluck with it mate and hopefully its changed from a Visual to a cop shop defect

    • Yeah so when you turn key to IGN the fuel pump should run for a few seconds. If you find the fuel pump relay (and have a multimeter, and a second person) to can check the relay inputs.  One trigger pin should be either fully earthed  The other trigger pin should get 12v from the ECU for say 3 seconds when you turn key to IGN, and at all times that key is at START (note, I said this from memory, it may be the other way around, ie one pin always has IGN 12v and the earth has continuity to earth when you turn the key) One Pin should have a good battery voltage The last pin goes to the fuel pump + Also note that if the power to the relay is good, and the relay is working, it is worth checking the pump has a good earth too. There is a computer in the standard system that increases the earth resistance to slow down the pump when not required, pretty old school and it may have failed
    • All this talk about fuel and fancy ECUs, meanwhile my poor old R32 has neither.... When the ignition is turned on, should there be power running o the fuel pump constantly or just for the few seconds it usually takes to prime the pump? About to go have another look at it, have watched some YouTube vids on how to use a  multimeter and looked at some wiring diagrams but really have NFI what I'm looking for because electricity is invisible
