well after the recent spate of defect stories and my own personal experience i've taken it upon myself to make my car defect free.

first thing to go was the apexi super intake. i sourced a stock r34 gtt box from WA (thanks eriktufa) and along with it was the stock paper based filter element.

the only thing cool about replacing the pod with the stock box was that i could now hear my turbo spooling! its sounds like a police siren now haha.... but performance was aweful!!! i felt a NOTICEABLE performance drop both on and off boost. bottom end, mid range, top end - all suffered.

enter the hiflow material based filter element for $95. awesome! the car is better both on and off boost, performance is back to as good if not better than the apexi intake.

raises the question of wether the pod would be again noticeably better than the hiflow filter element and stock box if it was boxed and had a cold air intake.

in either case, im more than happy with my performance and defect complex when mr plod asks to open my bonnet.

=)

I have done the same thing as u have except with a 33...back goes on the stock box with a K&N high flow filter...i get so much more cold air than before with the un-sheilded pod that when i opened the bonnet and touched the pod it was warm..hence hot air getting in. So with the stock box back in i can enjoy those cold nights knowing that the air box sccop is getting in all the chilling air...making my intercooler run more efficently too. Cheers Rob

im glad this issue was raised as i am thinking about putting a stock r32 box in replacement of my pod to avoid a defect notice. anyone out there with any more experiances with pod vs panel filters plz speak up !

i wud be prepared to change over even if there was only a few kw lost. rather that then $150 goin to the revenue.

I too have thought about changing back to the standard R33 GTS-T Air intake.

Does anyone know if it can still be mounted while having 2 FMIC pipes running down through the body of that front section of the car ?

Edit: After paying almost $200 for the UAS box to cover my pod it still hasnt been put on after 9mths of stuffing around. Then i'd have to pay someone to create a cold air intake duct down to the front bar.

I was thinking of building a stock looking air box using two filters( possiblyone on the top and one on the side of the box) the main problem being with the stock filters is one of cross sectional area, hence the concertina folding of most filters. But a problem also lies in the intake ramp size of the box it self. I dont think it has the cross sectional area to suport high flow applications. The only ways I can see this being done is to increase its size or try and force more air into the apiture. And that looks as if you have to vent the air box funnel through the bonnet at the front of the vent and place a small intake scoop on top. As air pass over the front edge of the bonnet it is under pressure and should help the problem. Sounds good on the bench, might have a serious look at the box it self in the next couple of weeks

hey mate, i got an r32, and i thought about putting the stock box back in to avoid defects. I did and hooked up a cold air intake to it and it worked fine... but all of a sudden my car sounded so boring... the performance is very similar to pod... So in the end i purchased a new pod and left it with the cold air intake, sounds awesome and runs just as well... I thought about why i love my car so much and the sounds it makes is a big part of it!

it all comes down to what people want ...some want the sound...some want it to be legal for cops...some just dont care.

with the filter elements...i use a K&N filter at least i know it will last long...u can 100% clean it using thier kits...i have tryed other brand with good preformance but poor filtering.

I've changed from a K&N Pod filter with no CAI or partition to the standard airbox with K&N Panel filter and i notice it is a bit more responsive now...especially around town. Mind you i did lose all them induction noises and now sounds like an atmo skyline....i couldn't care less for wanky noises! :)

    • Yeah pretty impressive hey, good to see quality products not over-shooting their prices. That's what drew me to buy the hypergear turbo, just a shame I've never got the chance to see it in action
    • Thank you GTSBoy and MBS206 I have done the compression test with the motor out of the vehicle, reason for the test was to see if I needed to remove the head and do rings etc while its out. I'm in the process of respraying the vehicle and tidying up a few things. Story behind it all is I've just purchased the skyline and it was running when I got it, never drove it on the street though as I wanted to pull it down and do it all up again before registering it. the gentleman I purchased it from told me the motor has a forged bottom end and has a decent tune through it but I was going to pull the sump off anyway to see if it is a forged bottom end. that's why I thought id do a compression test beforehand.
    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing. Cheers!
