Hey guys,

Looking threw the forums, a lot of questions have been raised about what brands to get and NOT to get.

Please post here on what brands you've had problems with and you suggest not to buy. Also what brands that you've haven't have problems with - this includeds fmic, turbos and any other items you wish to bring up.

So pretty mich general discussion on what good and bad quality brands. :P

intercoolers

- goto your local performance shop who works on skylines and get them to fit & supply a generic intercooler ballpark $550 fitted

- or you can go the jap brand kits, but they are much more expensive $1000 unfitted

turbos

- garrett, hks, apexi, trust, greddy, ihi, blitz, turbonetics

- avoid KKR, SuperT70, MonsterT70, Monster Power, Master Power, Monsta, T4, T3/T4s on ebay, "truck items"

What about cooling pro, CX racing for fmic?

Have you any bad exp with any of those brands or you going by word of mouth?

I'd generally avoid most of the Chinese suspension components too. Years ago I tried my luck with some eBay adjustable arms with the steel pillow balls. When they turned up in the mail the welding was shocking, full of pin holes, and brocken mig wire in places. I couldnt believe it could have left the factory like that. The steel tube looked like it was a piece of rolled plate and varied in wall thickness along the seam from about 3mm to 1mm in places. There was no way it was going on my car - major death trap waiting to happen. Fitting a part like that would be a major step backwards.

I have also toyed with a chinese split dump pipe, again from fleabay, the photos of the internals in the ad looked ok, but in reality looking from the opposite end when I received it, they were poor. Similar to the Chinese GTR intake pipe thread that was posted here not long ago. The quality of the stainless steel used was also very bad. This part didnt make it on my car either.

Those are the only times I've tried China parts, they never made it on my car, and I won't be buying their stuff again.

yeah, ive got a cheap local fit fmic..

i regret it now..

coz it does look poorly made..

compared to the hks/trust, or hdi/hybrid intercooler that a few of my mates have got..

and the welding and the quality of aluminum used to make the product stands out!

i bet it better for performance too!!

but u will hear people sayin..

"why would you pay $500+ just for an intercooler, wen they are made in china"

well thats what bein going around..evan japan brands..some people are sayin they are made in china,,

correct me if im wrong,,

but apart from than that..

the only thing i got thats china aswel..

is a replica greddy rs bov..which i got off ebay..

and i got say wen i got it..it looked just as good as the real thing..and sounded sweet..

but a year later..the spring is fu%k3D..and it wont open as much anymore..

the adjustable valve is like jammed/stuck..

i evan took it apart to try and fix it it..but still no good...

inside look like pretty poorish material..

like the dual springs and the seals used in this china replica.. :)

and wen seeing a real greddy rs bov inside..u can see the difference of interial materials used...

i know what bov im buying next :)

hope this helps...

Xforce hi flow cats on ebay are no good don't bother buying them. I've seen with my own eyes inside the cat compared to another 3" cat, the difference is huge! Xforce hold more restcritions. Not saying its bad, just to advise to watch what you buy on ebay!

Won't go cheap on a turbo; but IC core is fine... I'm using one from JustJap (600x300x100) and it works great; temperature differences are HUGE to say the least. At $300 for the core compared to $1000+ for a JDM similar, yeah why not.

Piping, bit of a hit n miss - I've seen really good stuff come from cheap kits, I've seen terrible stuff come from cheap kits. The JDM piping kits are precision made, fits first time every time. Easy fix - custom piping :) 1 afternoon, a mate, a bansaw, some masking tape and rulers and beer! Send it to your friend who welds alloy and its done. My FMIC setup cost me around $800 all up (core, piping, joiners, welding), still a whole lot less than going the JDM path.

Currently supporting 510hp without any dramas

Truck items such as Borg-Warner and Holset? Also, please share some of your bad experiences/knowledge about Masterpower Turbo's.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
