do you rate the this car?

any major faults?

easy to drive? (smoov or ruff ride)

ease to mod, upgrades? power?

Price range?

and yes i am a newbie and will use the search button from now on :(

Used to own a GTS4... That is if you are referring to the AWD 2 door version. Good car with lots of traction. However at 1490kg thats just too heavy for an RB20DET motor to lug around. Normal stop start driving they are really sluggish below 3500 rpm. If I had my time again I would have gotten the lighter GTST instead

but surely doin the normal mods (zorst, filter, boost) helps with better response?

how much are you looking forward to spending? a limit?

because i recal a mate had a Rb20DET with Basic mods.... & he used to get beaten by another mates Toyota Celieca VVT-i

why not a R34 GT-R? those things are really quick for something 20 years old.

personally i cant afford a R34 GTR , so i got myself a 32 GTST

do you rate the this car? 7/10

any major faults? No

easy to drive? (smoov or ruff ride) Smooth very good handling

ease to mod, upgrades? power? Not hard to mod

Price range? 6-15k depends

I had Apexi Pod, 3.5 " exhaust, FMIC ,HKS 2510 Boosted to 15 psi..These mods unfortunately will not aid in response. Only mid range and top end power. Like it or not RB20DET will never make low end muscle...That being said it was great in cornering and top end power...But it aint gonna run quick times down a drag strip without major clutch abuse

dang!

wow didnt think that they were inferior.......

what r32 owners do? crack it open and do the internals....or engine swaps (rb26)

Aparently the budget engine swap that works really well is an RB25DET from a Stagea. This being due to the stagea RB25DET coming with AWD so the whole lot is a simple bolt in affair. That extra 500cc makes the world of difference

hmm.... thinkin....

how much $$$ roughly for a motor, would a stock with bolton mods be suffice?

i dont plan to go to the strip every so often but then again i dont to have my ass handed to me either

is there no common ground? so basically all out on the RB20 or engine swap

BTW thanx for the info, this is really helping me....

Shop around for the motor...prices will vary with condition. I dont exactly see a huge demand for RB25's from stageas with the AWD sump. Look RB20 is a good motor, But not in a 1490kg car...RB25DET far better !!!

Are you specifically looking at the GTS4 for the AWD?? If not, then i would suggest go GTS-T.

If so, you have the option for the RB25 or RB26 GTR motor. If you're interested in the GTR engine swap, watch High Octane dvd's 3 & 4, the presenter does this swap to an R32 GTS4 with some impressive results. He doesnt so much go into specifics of price, & hes a kiwi so all the performance shops he recommends & uses are in NZ where the dvds are filmed for the most part. However, for the cost of the car plus the conversion & engineering hassles, its much easier to get a R32 GTR straight out of the box & have all the features & benefits of the better model. This is the path i would choose, given the option.

As for RB20 mods, looking at my own car & a few mates R32's, boost is a good way to go for improving them. You do the fuel pump, ecu & injectors in preparation, then screw boost into it. As they generally rev slightly higher than the RB25's, the top end power gains feel more noticable. Plus theyre a bloody strong engine.

If you're after the response also, go the GTR path. The bigger 2.6 to start with will give you much better response down low, plus they rev harder & have an extra turbo, stronger gearbox, electronically switchable AWD->RWD, better looking factory bodykit, etc etc....

u mean "boost" the blue gts4, Ketzal sterling put a twin turbo motor in it though.......

GTR's are gorgeous, are they a practical every day car?

Homework for the most part is usually the fun bit. You get to check out what other people have experimented with.

Best piece of advice i think most people would stick with....if you want something unique, then build it yourself. If you want something to match the specs thats reliable, get that model from the factory.

ie if you want a unique car, get the gts4 & either work the rb20 or do a conversion. If you want reliability straight up with little hassles, bite the bullet & buy a gtr.

This is the lesson ive just learnt, & is why im not so focused on doing my gts-t up atm, id rather save so i can trade up to a gtr.

*That is the car i was talking about. A major consideration, the gearbox that he blew up. If you put an RB25 or RB26 onto a RB20 gearbox with any kinda power behind it, that fate is only a matter of time for any RB20 gearbox. Especially the GTS4 unit. It was a gtr motor he put in, RB26 with twin hi-flow turbos & 18psi i believe.

Hope this has been of some use to you. Good luck with it all.

    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
