Hey the wider the tyres the more trouble u will have with spinning in the wet :)

More surface area on tyre easier to aquaplane

Its a real bugga mine loses traction so easy in wet but is good in the dry....

dry different story :-)

:what:

Does that mean if I put 14" 165s on the back I'll get more traction than 18" 265s????

So 1370kg on a 205 = more taction than 1370kg on 255 (19.6% bigger)?????

Call me dumb but that does not make any sense whatsoever.

hehe confusion..

There isnt a theory behind it..

And its a long one...

you need to penetrate your tyres thru the water to get grip on the tarmac.

The bigger the tyre the harder it is to penetrate thru u will find it may be easier to spin in normal conditions.......

If you put your foot down of course the skinnier tyre ids going to lose grip quicker but if u have over 200hp at wheels i try to keep boost off

I hit 10psi @100km down the freeway in 3rd and back swung out all of a sudden i was looking at the middle of the train line and skipped a few heart beats....

Still get your 265s there all good :burnout:

what macka's saying is right

the wider the tyre in the dry the better

the wider the tyre in the wet: the more likely the car will fish tail and spin out under power & cornering, Due to the tyre not cutting through the water lying on the road the tyres on my car seem to float over the water.

I also try to stay off boost in the wet

but in saying that it can also make for more FUN when its wet.

(WET WEATHER ACTION) :) :(

I understand the theory, but I can't believe thats what will happen in practice. There has to be a point where the more width of the rubber outweighs the amount of water they hold. ie the wider they are the more water they can hold before you get the aquaplane effect.

I'll have to experiment and find out.:)

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry guys but its still buggin me. I went to a tyre place today and spoke to the dude there who supported your theory for crap tyres, but, he also said that the technology in the high end rubber will hold better in the wet the bigger they get.

So I guess everyone wins...

S13 Silvia, how did you go with gettin the car fixed??

Yeah, I fixed it within a week

I bought a castor rod $95 at local import wrecker and a

Left Transverse Link Assembley (suspension arm) for $40 including postage off another car enthusiast.

I unbolted the old suspension arm and castor rod and fitted the new stuff, it wasn't too hard when you think about it except I had trouble getting some of the bolts off (needed at least 2 people's torque) but now when I steer sometimes I get a light banging noise and I've tried to find out what it is but to no avail, I'm still trying to find out.

argh i had the same problem, and now im having the same noise issue...

Its either when u turn all the way, or u go over a speed hump/etc, u get a creeking noise from the front left (in my case).

Ive had it checked out, they couldn't find problems, had it all greased up, same problem still...Getting the steering rack colunm replaced atm, so ill let u know if it makes a difference

lolol it ****en ****s u aye :rolleyes::):D

For the life of me i have nfi whats causing it...

They went over the springs, brushs, joints, everything, no problems. They oiled it all up hard, which made some difference (better but not perfect, and im touchy bout **** like this :D).

I'll let u know when i get my car back, should be friday

sure does! :)

It's a bast**d.

I got my mate to steer it lock to lock on the spot and drive slowly steering lock to lock and going over bumps and I couldn't work out what it was. I oiled all the joints I touched and also WD-40'd everything at a different time and it had no effect. No idea! But over the weekend, I ran up the ass of a Magna (woman driver.....even though technically it's my fault ) and also lost 3 demerit points! So that problem hasn't been at the forefront but it would be good to know wtf it is!

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
