KK so car got dynoed today 550cc injectors, hypergear hi flow and z32. Cars getting compressor surge... bad batch of fuel or poor dyno conditions. Car will get re dynoed next week in EFI performances new dyno cell with new fuel to try to correct the problem as the current dynob eing used for my car was poor conditions, Stale air etc. Just going to hafto wait till then :(

but you get to choose from a few different specs..

any of this sound familiar? ATR28? G2 profile, G3 profile? 71mm compressor wheel? 76mm compressor wheel?

what rwkw numbers were you pulling during that initial run?

its the G3 profile. As fo what numbers I made, I'll let you know when it gets re dyno'd as the main influences towards the bad tune atm are the dyno conditions and an extremely bad batch of vortex 98. It could be the manifold needs to be upgraded... not sure as of yet it all really jsut needs to be sussed out and have a good going over end of this week or beggining of next. The car only made 190rwkw's at 1.2 bar. And the timing is all out of whack atm.

Hrm Im starting to wonder now. The hypergear turbos are able to run 20psi or so they say. Im starting to wonder if the turbo being internally gated and running 1.4 bar of boost could be causing the compressor surge. As I cant seem to understand how the standard manifold could be causing a restriction bellow 250rwkw's. Here are the turbo specs, my car mods and a small bit of detail on the first dyno and what seems to be happening atm.

Hypergear hiflow

ATR28 G3 profile .63 has the larger OP6 rear housing.

Car has as follows:

Hybrid FMIC

AVCR boost controller

z32 AFM

Turbosmart Fuel Reg

HKS Fuel pump

Apexi Intake

550cc injectors

3" turbo back exhaust

splitfires

Nistune

etc etc. So basic mods.

Dyno run when I got the nistune donestandard turbo made 180rwkw'sat 13psi, everything was spot on.

Now after the hypergear turbo, injectors and z32.

its final power runs was set to 18psi, car was getting to around 250hpgetting compressor surge, overboosting and jumping to around 260hp at about 25psi. now the car had a bad batch of fuel in it I got earlier at a caltex, 98 ron of course. Dyno conditions were terrible as the dyno being used had no fresh air at all so the car hated it.

Im getting the car re dynod to fix up the problems but have been told that the manifold may be giving the car too much restriction. But I find it hard that the standard manifold would need replacing at such a low power level.

i guess it is possible. Might help if you're able to find out the compressor wheel size.

how do you know you got the larger of the OP6 rear housing?

looks like you've got all the supporting mods there, and i too agree that the manifold idea seems a little strange.

when's the next dyno run booked?

end of this week, beggining of next. Guys at EFI have bene a big help as there only jsut getting there dyno facility sorted out this week so there getting my car retuned for free as the other facilities were poor. As for the compressor wheel the guy from hypergear really didnt give me any specs to go buy, what I actually got in the mail was a turbo with a larger rear housing than what I ordered, sit the old turbo and new turbo side by side and u will see the difference. All I got from the bloke at hypergear was it was using to4 internals. I mite make a phone call and get the info right now.

oh so you didn't send off your old turbo??

nah nah, they ordered 1 in and made it up. Bloke from hypergear recons its the intake pipe sucking shut, the boost solinoid is rooted, boost controller is rooted or cam gears. :S

those intake pipes do suck shut, that's for sure....

hmm... guess you won't know until it gets back on the dyno.

did you have a specific power goal/figure in mind when you ordered the highflow?

Its a ATR28G2 CHRA. using the GT2871RS Comp wheel. It might be in a None OP6 R34's rear housing. The comp wheel is not big enough to surge and we’ve opened up the air gap to avoid surging. Its been dynoed 233rwkws in smaller R33's rear housing at 1.1 bar. It doesn't seems to be a turbo issue. Check in take pipe, EBC, timing and tune.

Yeh around 250rwkw's but the tuner strongly believes its going to do better than that on his first impressions. we just hafto see I guess. Im going to be running 1.4 bar and if everything goes well hopefully if first impressions last I cans ee around 260rwkw's although thats probably stretching the abilities of my gearbox a tad as the cars auto. Going to get onto upgrading that intake pipe though this week, if anything Id say that sounds like whats going on as Im sure those intake pipes arnt made for running 1.4bar of boost :)

look up the 'rev210 intake mod' if you want a cheap $5 diy solution.

or these guys sell silicone intake pipes that are up to the job. http://www.racespec.com.au/

good luck and let us know how you go because i'm very interested in your final power and how that spec'd turbo goes.

  • 2 weeks later...

Im starting to wonder if my problem is being caused by my BOV hks ssqv, i believe there atmo bovs. Hrmm anyone with an idea? no one seems to be able to pin point where my problem is. I dont hear the bov sound anymore sinze the turbo upgrade... no pshhh just a dut dut dut dut dut sound when i come off the accelerator but i assumed that was due to running more boost.

    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is may e 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Dose anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
    • Sorry I haven't been following all the detail, so you may have tried this. Does it idle with the tiniest bit of throttle you can add? You've mentioned the IACV, does it have an AAC valve and have you adjusted it at all (ie, screw the idle adjust screw all the way in, then back it out a couple of turns until idle is stable)?
    • My bad, I unplugged the one underlined in red instead of yellow before. With the car started, after unplugging the IACV (the one underlined in yellow), it idled at around 400/500 for 3 seconds before stalling. Attempting to start the car without the IACV will not start the car.   It does stutter and sputter for around 5 seconds before dying. However, immediately after starting it, you can already hear some slight sputters from the exhaust.   It won't start with the AFM unplugged. If it is when the car has already started, it stalls in a few seconds.   Yesterday, I did take some logs using Nistune of 3 scenarios. Car idling till it stalls Car idling and unplugging the IACV Car idling and removing the AFM I also have some previous logs of when the Car is idling till it stalls and when driving and it cuts. I am not really knowledgeable enough to understand what to look for. After every test, car idles rougher and rougher, until I have to stop. It will be fine the day after.
    • There is no difference between a 17x8 and an 18x8. The total diameter of the tyre needs to remain +/- the same (so you don't mess up the gearing, speedo reading, and clearance when turning front wheels..... so you just need to use a lower profile tyre on th 18 than you do on the 17. /rocket surgery.
    • I thought the same to start with. But then I thought it was one of those LCAs where the end of the ARB goes through a bushing in the LCA itself, instead of having an end link.
